2nd Round pick signed

not sure if this was posted...

From Keith Law (4:05 p.m. ET): The Padres signed second rounder Everett Williamsfor $775,000. The outfielder was under consideration in the first round by a number of teams but slid primarily due to a deep crop of similar high school outfielders and concerns about his bonus demands that, in hindsight, were probably unfounded. Williams projects as a top-of-the-order hitter who can play a solid centerfield; he's short but strong with a runningback's build and adds some needed athleticism to the Padres' thin system, as their drafts have been heavy on polished college players in recent years. Williams was committed to play for the University of Texas.

That's freaking awesome if true!!!

He was asking for a million that's why he slipped to the 2nd round

He was considered a first round player, quite the steal…

Now that I'm looking at it

This HAS to be too good to be true. The Orioles signed a 22nd rounder to 990K and an 11th rounder for 995K. Not only that, the Phillies just signed a 7th rounder for 900K. This guy was considered to be the hardest to sign. They must have found some kind of injury or something, but that is purely speculation.

The money really doesn’t make sense, but the source is pretty credible

That's why I'm speculating about injuries or some other leverage the Padres might have had

Apparently there are rumors floating around that Williams didn't qualify for UT.

If true, that would really help the Padres’ negotiating position and explain the surprising affordability of his signing bonus.

Indeed it would

This is a huge coup for the Padres front office.

Williams was supposed to be the toughest to sign, that he wanted first-round money to forgo college.

Bravo boys, bravo.
