Open Thread, 8/16/2009: Padres vs Cardinals

San Diego Padres at St. Louis Cardinals, Aug 16, 2009 11:15 AM PDT

After the last two games, I'd recommend that most of you avoid today's Padres game except for the fact that it's Clayton Richard going for us and if there's one thing he knows how to do, it's lead the Padres to victories.

Expect 9 runs by the fourth inning from the Padres.

I'M REALLY GUARANTEEING A VICTORY NOW!!! GO PADRES!!!

Does anyone get the impression that

while the Padres have made huge strides playing teams recently, The Cardinals are just such a better team? Like even though you can beat up all your friends, beating up your big brother still exposes how small you still are?

Sort Of

The Cardinals are playing really well right now. Lugo and Holliday won’t hit like this forever, they’ll come down to Earth. They are also playing on borrowed time right now; they have a ton of players about to be free agents and they can’t afford them all. They are in full playoff push mode. The Padres aren’t even close to being in that mode.

A bit weary..

of TGwynn propensity to hitting weak grounders to second or first as he tries to pull most everything now. Limited to only being able to hit singles. Gwynn’s only chance to make it at this level is to spray the ball. What is Gwynn’s value ? : he has no baserunning IQ : he is pure station to station…4th outfielder written all over him..offensively : he is Kerry Robinson with less speed. I hope we are not automatically saddled with this guy for 4 years because his name is Gwynn…which leads to my next point : are we now saddled with Edgar Gonzalez as well ?

by texpadre on Aug 16, 2009 11:27 AM PDT reply actions

We were never saddled with Chris Gwynn

Nor Marcus Giles, nor any particular Alomar, nor either Hoffman. When TGJ’s time is up with the Padres, it’ll be up and nobody will think anything of it.

by Dex on Aug 16, 2009 11:30 AM PDT up reply actions   1 recs

wrong, we were saddled with Chris Gwynn

did you watch Chris Gwynn’s 1996 performance ? Think he stays on that roster if his name isn’t Gwynn ?

by texpadre on Aug 16, 2009 11:34 AM PDT up reply actions

Did you miss Chris Gwynn's double in 1996?

That was one of the greatest hits in Padres history.

by jbox on Aug 16, 2009 11:36 AM PDT up reply actions

I remember Chris Gwynn's double

at was at Dodger Stadium that day…..play off spot had already been clinched by both, Dodgers took out their regulars: sort of anti-climatic days, so anti-climatic that the Padres started Bob Tewksbury

by texpadre on Aug 16, 2009 11:53 AM PDT up reply actions

anti-climatic!?

That was a fantastic game.

by jbox on Aug 16, 2009 12:04 PM PDT up reply actions

you're right..

it was a fantastic game because we won the Division but it was also kind of, for lack of better phrase: weird environment/culture because both teams had won a spot in the playoffs and both teams played it safe (as far as player moves) ..and yes, on that day, Chris Gwynn delivered

by texpadre on Aug 16, 2009 1:38 PM PDT up reply actions

wrong.

Over a 10 year career, Chris Gwynn had 100 plate appearances as a utility player in 1996. We were hardly “saddled” with the guy.

by Dex on Aug 16, 2009 12:00 PM PDT up reply actions   1 recs

I guess time will tell

I am sure now that I am being irrational, but I think we will have other (better) options in the future as far as other OFers and my fear is that Gwynn will get the nod when the trend says that he shouldn’t.

by texpadre on Aug 16, 2009 1:41 PM PDT up reply actions

but..

I can’t seem to let it die …but what exactly equals a “saddling” ….did you watch Chris Gwynn in that ’96 season fail in big pinch hitting appearance after big pinch hitting appearance in that tight division race ….the Murph crowd booing him endlessly, the talk show pundits questioning why indeed Chris Gwynn was on the roster…was it because he was a Gwynn ? I say yes. Therefore, we were indeed “saddled”.

by texpadre on Aug 16, 2009 1:53 PM PDT up reply actions

Padre Saddles (83-present) - family ties can mean a roster spot
  • Greg Booker – nephew of Jack McKeon
  • Chris Gwynn
  • Edgar Gonzalez
  • Chris Gwynn Jr. ? jury is still out on this one.

Cabrera is fast so you wouldn’t expect many situations where you throw home there. He also caught the ball pretty far back too (I think he was behind the base). Most of the time Adrian has done something similar he fielded the ball while playing in.

MLB rules

say its suspended until the home team finishes its at-bats, since the visiting team in this case scored one or more runs to take the lead.
if the home team is ahead right now, they’d be packing their bags and heading for the bus.

by Lancers46 on Aug 16, 2009 1:41 PM PDT up reply actions

okay

But we still don’t win.

And since it’s a day game, they probably wouldn’t be packing their bags because we are definitely going to be waiting this delay out.

And behind Zimmerman there

Who, with Wright out, has to be considered the front runner anyways. UZR just solidifies his case.

Zimmerman is waaaaaaaaaaaaay ahead in UZR

over everyone. The rest of the pack including Kouz is around the same.

But

The street rep on Zimm is that he’s an excellent defender that could probably play SS. And with the statheads behind him, votes won’t have a lot of naysayers saying otherwise. Plus, he’s a good hitter.

Yeah

I agree with you. Zimmerman seems to be a lock. Although he plays for the worst teams in baseball and I’ll admit I was pretty surprised when Adrian won it last year.

His fielding % was just .956 (with 13 errors)

BUT, as we all know, the Gold Glove award can be a sham. Look at Palmiero winning one when he was primarily a DH and Poo-holes winning it over Aid.

That said, based on strictly numbers, Kouz does deserve it this year.

An asian born player has never won a major. Except for Tiger, I suppose.

Hmmm a black/asian hybrid seems to be the best athelete.

Athleticism of the black parent and the focus and determination of the Asian parent. Was that racist?

Racism is the belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race.

Heath Bell floating on the waiver wire?

Just heard something like this on baseball tonight about a minute ago.

by Padres in VA on Aug 16, 2009 4:22 PM PDT reply actions

You'll have to excuse my ignorance.

What are the rules dictating this? If he is claimed, what happens? What do the Pads get

by Padres in VA on Aug 16, 2009 4:27 PM PDT up reply actions

The Padres don't have to let him go, if he is claimed.

It’s sort of an experiment in that way. If he is claimed by Team X, then the Padres can say, Hey, what would you like to give us. If the Padres don’t like it, they can say, No way.

I think that’s mostly correct.

So he can get it out of the way when it’s not important.
