July 7th OT - Defang the Snakes

Ooh, look at me and my clever headlines!

Seriously though, lets get an OT going. I know that we suck and all (and that I really have no reason to bitch since I've been MIA all season, but you gotta get it started somehwere).

Star-divide

Words, words, words, words. This 75 words long crap is a really dumb rule.

Um, as of right now, we're winning 1-0 but that could change in a heartbeat. Am I there yet on words?

Worst. Rule. Ever.

Although I almost feel bad that some people might miss Drama’s whimsical take on the Michael Jackson/jbox situation. It’s worth reading.

by Phantom on Jul 7, 2009 7:18 PM PDT up reply actions

I deleted it...but for the ones who missed it:

Crazy day today, huh? You’re probably wondering why I’m putting up the OT tonight. Where are jbox and Dex you ask? Have they quit caring just because Walter Silva has been given his walking papers…no. jbox pulled some strings with our very own beloved GLB Entertainment Correspondent matto619 to score some MJ Memorial tickets. Now as you may or may not know…shortly after the memorial, as MJ’s golden coffin was being carried out of Staples Center…jbox, apparently overcome with emotion, threw himself on the coffin while singing “P.Y.T.” (Pretty Young Thing – to the layman) in Spanish. It was quite the scene…Rev. Al Sharpton and Brooke Shields prying jbox’s shivering body off the glimmering golden box. Long story short – jbox is in the Los Angeles City Jail and Dex is trying to bail him out.

Go Padres!

We especially can be patient with him

He could spend 7 years in the minors and still debut in the majors at age 23.

Whoa

Danny Putnam is on the Portland Beavers. I went to high school with that guy. His dad is my primary care doctor. I can’t seem to figure out when the A’s dumped him and the Beavs picked him up.

He was a 1st round pick

But, he hasn’t really hit well at AAA. He’s also 27. He broke Adrian Gonzalez’ San Diego Section HR record in high school, but that power never translated in the minors. He’s probably organizational filler. But, I’m a fan for other reasons.

It'd be cool to see him as a Padre

Maybe in September. Not as cool as seeing other guys from high school like Hank Blalock or Cole Hamels. But, still pretty cool. Something to talk about at my next doctor’s visit.

I know it was INSANE.

6IP and only 2 ER. Luckily he’s really young (22 I think?) so we can afford to be a bit patient with him.

Even if he can't cut it as a starter

Scouting reports still say that he’d be a good late inning reliever. We’ll see.

What kind of stuff does he have?

I’ve never actually seen him pitch, and milb.com doesn’t have that info. Does anyone know what exactly his problem in AAA has been?

His main problem in AAA

Is that he doesn’t have experience with it. From The Baseball Prospect Book 2009 as quoted by John Sickels:

Fastball was better than I had been led to expect: his first 12 fastballs were, in order, 88-89-88-90-89-88-87-91-92-90-89-87. The fastball also hadmore movement than anticipated, it was not the straigt pitch that I have read about in Baseball America. He mixed in a slider at 79-81 MPH, and a slow curveball at 73-74. He also threw one pitch at 81 MPH which had bizarre screwball-like action; perhaps it was a changeup. I was impressed with his secondary stuff, the only real mistake he made was hanging a slow curveball that Dan Carte hit for a home run.

My guess, it that his struggles are similar to many that have slower fastballs. He needs to locate it and it may be that with his promotion he is nibbling a little. When you have a slower fastball and you nibble, more experienced hitters will recognize it out of the zone and wait for something over the plate. He also has a very unorthodox motion, so it may also be that he is having trouble keeping all the parts in sync. Sickels goes on to say:

but the slippage is in his control, as well as an excessive fly ball tendency that could result in too many homers
