Game Thread: 7/3, Padres vs. Manny
Los Angeles Dodgers at San Diego Padres, Jul 3, 2009 7:05 PM PDT
It's so exciting Manny playing his first game with the Dodgers since his PED suspension.
Manny is not even worried about Padres fan booing him. He's so brave! He says "I'm used to that, when you're good, and you're not at home they are going to boo you.... that's only going to give you more fire, so bring it on."
Ok, nobody boo him! Wait! What if he's using reverse psychology on us? We better boo him just to be safe.
Bud Black said Manny's return isn't going to affect the Padres because they are playing the Dodgers and not Manny. Way to suck the fun out of the game Buddy. He should have said the Padres are gunning for him.
Go Padres!

I want one that reverses though
The other side has the same thing, except with red as opposed to blue, for when around Red Sux fans.

Manny is going down with the Dodgers
Crazy how Manny was allowed to play in the minors even though he was suspended.
Its there so suspended players don't have to start rehab after the suspension ends.
For major league players, the minors are for rehab. Its just in this instance, the rehab is from a forced suspension.
A 50 game suspension should be just that. No less, if he still needs to rehab then that is part of it.
I love Dodger fans.
The guy cheats….bails on their team for 50 games…doesn’t apologize…and at the end of the day, nothin’ but love.
It's a product of stupidity.
They think Manny is their team’s savior.

Merriman???
Brian Giles????
Applying some sort of provincial moral righteousness to sports teams and their fans seems pretty juvenile.
Cammy admited it.

All I know is that
with Brian Giles not admitting anything,
Merriman not admitting anything,
and Caminiti killing himself with a drug induced heart attack;
We are not really in a position to be pointing fingers and claiming that we are more virtuous and noble.
That is ludicrous!
Well
Giles was never caught and since he’s never had any power as a Padre he probably stopped before he got here.
Caminiti admitted without being caught. There is something to be said for that.
Straight up and down.
Word and word.

Sure
But he did it after he retired. They couldn’t punish him anymore. Just like Canseco.
As for Giles, I was actually referring to his spousal abuse charges, but if you think he was juicing too, I can certainly see that being a possibility.
Cammy didn't admit it because "they couldn't punish him anymore".
Cammy admitted it because he was trying (unsuccessfully) to get himself clean.
You know what’s really ludicrous? Comparing Ken Caminiti and Jose Canseco.
My only comparison
between the two is that they both did steroids and they both admitted it after their career was over.
Your only comparison is a bad one.
Did they both do steroids? Yes. But they admitted it for ENTIRELY different reasons.
As I stated before, for Caminiti, it was part of the process of rehabilitation with his addiction to drugs and alcohol. A battle he eventually lost.
Canseco is just a piece of shit that would drop any name he could in an effort to sell more books and put money in his pocket.

Padres fans are not defending Giles at all.
Cami didn’t have to admit anything, he never would have been caught, but he did it anyway. I’d never defend him taking steroids, but at least he came clean.

Well
People keep leaving that out.
He didn’t come clean about it in 1996.
But none of you apply the same standards to M Ramirez.
Ramirez got caught though. He had the opportunity to say something.
Caminiti never got caught and came out on his own. Ramirez would never come out and say that he used steriods after he retires if he never got caught.
Since nobody's said it yet...

Two errors. One on Cabrera and one on Gaudin.
by Zach (maestro876) on Jul 3, 2009 7:19 PM PDT reply actions
Two erorors but all runs after were EARNED
Did you notice the “official” box score? Ethier was safe on a “fielder’s choice”, even though a play at first was made on him. Furcal scored on Cabrera’s error, when Gaudin made a play at the plate and incurred another error? Sheesh! Even if you can’t pre-suppose a double play at first, the second throwing error to the plate should have made that and the other four runs UNearned. Instead, Gaudin was hung with five earned runs, because the sportswriter they had for official scorer can’t score a game!
This same stuff happened to Geer and Correia earlier in the season. The sportswriters have no business scoring the game. They write about the players, so judging the plays as official scorer is a conflict of interest. If MLB can’t hire professional scorers or put retired umpires in those slots, the club should hire softball umpires for the job, anybody but people whose only qualification is the ability to write complete sentences.

Comments from the game
I was pleasantly surprised to see some of the mythical white upper middle class Dodger fans. The past few Dodger games I’d been to at Petco Park I was pretty sure they were being forbidden from crossing into San Diego county. You $$$ are appreciated all y’all that came out.
Unfortunately, I had the mustachioed, big gut, latino (possibly) wannabe vatos behind me. Average inning of arrival: 2nd inning (pretty impressive). Average number of innings spent facing the field: 4 (again, pretty impressive). Average number of innings before realizing that Manny had been taken out for Pierre: 1.5. Average number of f bombs in a sentence: 4 (very impressive, but in a bad way).
Like I said before the game, I was expecting this to basically be an away game. So I was disappointed at all by crowd response. I don’t care how much they booed or cheered Ramirez. In fact, I would just look in a random direction as he walked to the plate; the fool doesn’t even deserve my attention. Since my expectations were so low I was actually impressive with how well the Padres fans fought off the “Let’s Go Dodgers” chants, however I think this has more to do with it being easier to say “res” louder than “gers”.
I felt the most sorrier for the Pad squad. We had two of them that tried to get section 302 going. They had a sign and everything, but the Dodgers fans would stand in the way of their signs (no physical contact fortunately) and there just weren’t enough pairs of Padre-favoring-lungs to get their chants working. PSA cherry picked a more pro-Padres section, but it didn’t look like he had much more success, but (surprise, surprise) no Dodgers fans went up and harassed his cheer attempts. I think the whole 5 run suckfest that Chad “Yellow Belly, seriously you need to grow a pair and clutch it up for a big game” Gaudin initiated took a lot out of any enthusiasm the crowd may have had.
10th Padres loss I’ve seen this season in person. Pretty amusing that Manny did jack squat in that game. Didn’t stay for fireworks, Petco’s are overrated. Tin Fish was good for the pre-game, no more Fat Tire there though, had to settle for Dos Equis. That is all. I’m out.
Memo to baseball managers: You manufacture runs by NOT making outs, not by making them on purpose.
*correction
I said “I was disappointed at all by crowd response”, but I mean “I wasn’t disappointed at all by crowd response”.
I always mess up negatives. Makes things really confusing doesn’t it?
I think I also said impressive when I meant impressed. And there is probably some You’s instead of Yours. Maybe I had too many Dos Equis and Stone’s to get this all out correct. G’night. Happy 4th.
Memo to baseball managers: You manufacture runs by NOT making outs, not by making them on purpose.
Dodger fans are obnoxious
When Pad Squad guy Andre was doing the “let’s go Padres” bit to get the home crowd fired up in our section, I saw PSA get pelted 3 times by paper cup golf balls in about one minute’s time, all while being heckled by chants of “culero….culero”. It sure was nice a few years ago when the Dodgers sucked and these jerkoffs staid relatively quiet as they left their money while they visited San Diego.
I thought the fire works were pretty good tonight. They obviously made them better than they have been all year because of the 4th of July.
