Game Thread: 7/26, Pads vs. Nats
San Diego Padres at Washington Nationals, Jul 26, 2009 10:35 AM PDT
Adrian is out of the line up today. I wonder if he'll come in later to get that coveted Padres Consecutive Game record all to himself.

And Blanks isn't replacing him at 1B
At least he’s in the lineup.

I think if the Padres had
any intention of trading Adrian at all they would be putting Blanks in at first any chance they can get. Being that he’s not in there right now I think we could put to rest the Adrian trade rumors for the season.

put to rest the Adrian trade rumors for the season
that and the fact the have rebuffed every offer so far.
the front office knows that if they trade him “in season”, it will kill ticket sales for the rest of the year. Ideally, they will wait until the season ticket commitments for 2010 are made.

Nice outing from Chad.
7 innings, 1 ER.
Now watch him get a no-decision.
Or for Bud to throw him out there in the 8th to pick up a loss.

TGJr got caught a fair amount in the minors too
So, he’s never really been great at it, even against lesser competition. Hard to expect him to step it up in the majors.

channel 4 puts up a stat saying the Padres
lead in NL for most strikeouts by relievers this year, thats great! ….umm wheres the stat that follows saying the padres lead in innings pitched by relievers.
Ugh.
Should we be cheering for wins or losses at this point?

I was critical of him in previous discussions
but it’s too early to call him a bust
Considering the hype
He’d need to be a .270/.340/.450 hitter to even begin to live up to the potential. If he moves to 3B, I can settle for .260/.330/.430, but he’s not even doing that (although he was close last year). Those are okay numbers, but the Padres need players with better than okay numbers.
Memo to baseball managers: You manufacture runs by NOT making outs, not by making them on purpose.
Actually
I’d take last years numbers (.269/.337/.420) over what I just said (.260/.330/.430). Less power, but less outs too.
Memo to baseball managers: You manufacture runs by NOT making outs, not by making them on purpose.
As long as he continues to get regular playing time
to help him learn and go through his growing pains, and he gets moved back to his natural position, I don’t see any reason he can’t break out soon and accomplish that.

But like I said
Those are okay numbers for 3B, but not a LF. The average LF I believe has a better line than that.
Memo to baseball managers: You manufacture runs by NOT making outs, not by making them on purpose.
Agreed
and I think he belongs at 3B, not left field.

Funny thing is if you look at his road numbers
he’s pretty much the player we hoped him to be: .293/.349/.420

.265/.341/.431
So I guess that ain’t bad.

Padres OPS vs League Average
No surprise, the only position where we are above league average is 1B.
Hundley is actually 1 point of OPS above league, but I don’t think I can count him as Padres C.
Memo to baseball managers: You manufacture runs by NOT making outs, not by making them on purpose.
Until this season
Kouz’s road numbers were better than that and easily above average for a third baseman.
Road numbers
(Small sample size warning)
Petco is supposed to be the place where speed rules.
Cabrera (not counting today)
home: .194/.270/.299 1 SB 76 PAs
away: .281/.378/.359 9 SB 76 PAs
and then add 5 more PAs and a SB today.
Weird, huh?
Memo to baseball managers: You manufacture runs by NOT making outs, not by making them on purpose.
But
Without regular time there his defense is unplayable. I even wonder if he can even approach how good Kouz is even if he did go into a season at 3B. Kouz is pretty solid, and Headley has looked pretty ugly. I’d be more encourage if Headley looked playable without the practice time, but he doesn’t.
Memo to baseball managers: You manufacture runs by NOT making outs, not by making them on purpose.
The organization may have ruined him
by sticking him in left field in an attempt to not choose between him and Kouzmanoff.

I like the decision to put him in LF
But it was under the assumption that Kouz wouldn’t be awful.
Memo to baseball managers: You manufacture runs by NOT making outs, not by making them on purpose.
I would rather they have a real outfielder in left
and have Chase in his natural position.
It would also have been nice to have moved Kouz before his value plummeted. This organization has a nasty habit of hanging on to players one year too long.

I agree that Headley should get 300 more PA's & should be at 3b
which leads to my next question, what are the Pads waiting for ? Why is Kouzmanoff still in this lineup on a everyday basis ?
People who like RBI totals think Kouz is good?
It’s a dumb reason, but you got me, I got no clue. Like I said before though, his glove is pretty solid too.
Memo to baseball managers: You manufacture runs by NOT making outs, not by making them on purpose.
if people like RBI totals...
then why isn’t a single club interested in Kouz ? Perhaps, they look at his OPS which is still less than .700
By people
I mean Buddy Black.
Memo to baseball managers: You manufacture runs by NOT making outs, not by making them on purpose.
gotcha.....
Btw, Macias just flied out on what may have been his last MLB at bat until September and if he doesn’t hit above .230 in the minors then he shouldn’t get that many more looks at this level.
I am not a Macias fan
We already have a left handed 4th/5th OF prospect on the major league roster (Venable). We don’t need another one. And we certainly don’t need one that gets starts.

Kouz's defense is barely average.
His UZR is 0.4, and his RngR -2.6.
His overall WPA is -0.74.

Wow
I think I’m officially done following this team this year. I’m not surrendering my allegiance, but what’s the point? The games are boring, and we never manage to win, even in games where we should…like today. 24 games back? Who cares anymore?
Usually, I follow the Padres religiously as my primary team and “soft-follow” the Angels in the AL as my secondary. I think I’m going to switch that and pay more attention to the Angels. At least they’re somewhat exciting. I’ll just read about the Padres games in the paper the next day: “Oh, look at that. . .another extra-innings loss.” (Instead of wasting my time actually listening to it, like I did today.)
This is mostly how I feel.
I follow the minor league teams, though. They’re pretty interesting.

And of course I’ll still check in here at Gaslamp Ball for Padres news and tidbits!
Stay away from the Beavers.
