Game Thread: 7/26, Pads vs. Nats

San Diego Padres at Washington Nationals, Jul 26, 2009 10:35 AM PDT

Adrian is out of the line up today.  I wonder if he'll come in later to get that coveted Padres Consecutive Game record all to himself.

I think if the Padres had

any intention of trading Adrian at all they would be putting Blanks in at first any chance they can get. Being that he’s not in there right now I think we could put to rest the Adrian trade rumors for the season.

put to rest the Adrian trade rumors for the season

that and the fact the have rebuffed every offer so far.
the front office knows that if they trade him “in season”, it will kill ticket sales for the rest of the year. Ideally, they will wait until the season ticket commitments for 2010 are made.

by C Los on Jul 26, 2009 12:53 PM PDT up reply actions

Considering the hype

He’d need to be a .270/.340/.450 hitter to even begin to live up to the potential. If he moves to 3B, I can settle for .260/.330/.430, but he’s not even doing that (although he was close last year). Those are okay numbers, but the Padres need players with better than okay numbers.

Memo to baseball managers: You manufacture runs by NOT making outs, not by making them on purpose.

by Wonko on Jul 26, 2009 12:55 PM PDT up reply actions

Actually

I’d take last years numbers (.269/.337/.420) over what I just said (.260/.330/.430). Less power, but less outs too.

As long as he continues to get regular playing time

to help him learn and go through his growing pains, and he gets moved back to his natural position, I don’t see any reason he can’t break out soon and accomplish that.

But like I said

Padres OPS vs League Average

No surprise, the only position where we are above league average is 1B.

Hundley is actually 1 point of OPS above league, but I don’t think I can count him as Padres C.

Road numbers

(Small sample size warning)

Petco is supposed to be the place where speed rules.

Cabrera (not counting today)
home: .194/.270/.299 1 SB 76 PAs
away: .281/.378/.359 9 SB 76 PAs

and then add 5 more PAs and a SB today.

Weird, huh?

by Wonko on Jul 26, 2009 1:32 PM PDT up reply actions

But

Without regular time there his defense is unplayable. I even wonder if he can even approach how good Kouz is even if he did go into a season at 3B. Kouz is pretty solid, and Headley has looked pretty ugly. I’d be more encourage if Headley looked playable without the practice time, but he doesn’t.

I would rather they have a real outfielder in left

and have Chase in his natural position.

It would also have been nice to have moved Kouz before his value plummeted. This organization has a nasty habit of hanging on to players one year too long.

I agree that Headley should get 300 more PA's & should be at 3b

which leads to my next question, what are the Pads waiting for ? Why is Kouzmanoff still in this lineup on a everyday basis ?

by texpadre on Jul 26, 2009 1:02 PM PDT reply actions

Wow

I think I’m officially done following this team this year. I’m not surrendering my allegiance, but what’s the point? The games are boring, and we never manage to win, even in games where we should…like today. 24 games back? Who cares anymore?

Usually, I follow the Padres religiously as my primary team and “soft-follow” the Angels in the AL as my secondary. I think I’m going to switch that and pay more attention to the Angels. At least they’re somewhat exciting. I’ll just read about the Padres games in the paper the next day: “Oh, look at that. . .another extra-innings loss.” (Instead of wasting my time actually listening to it, like I did today.)
