Something pleasant - Could Strausburg end up as a Padre?
http://coreybrock.mlblogs.com/archives/2009/07/stephen_strasburg_as_a_padre.html
As it stands now the draft would look like
1. Washington
2. Washington (compensation not signing Strausburg)
3. San Diego
4. San Diego (Compensation not signing Tate)
Its doubtful the Nationals would do the same thing twice and pick Strausburg. So that could mean we would end up with the ability to potentially pick Strausburg.
It is something of a dream, for now there appears to be no motion with the Nationals talk. But that could still happen and if it does it could make for one amazing possible occurrence.

This is why teams should be able
to trade draft picks. It’s an embarrassment that the Nationals are so inept (as well as the Padres) that the two teams could cover the top 4 picks in the ’10 draft.
I see the Nationals really only having two choices:
1. Draft Strasburg again because there’s no way he’ll sit out another year and they’d actually have leverage.
2. Take Matt Bush type picks (cheap types not retarded types) at the top of the draft to ensure that they’ll sign for less.
If teams like the Padres and Nationals could trade down however, they could begin to stockpile the talent required to get them out of their respective holes a lot quicker (although the Padres have never done a thing to demonstrate they can evaluate and develop talent—-so we’d still be fooked)
This compensation business at the top of the draft is just not a smart idea. $$$ demands increase each year so how are teams with no $$$ supposed to get a pick signed the following year?
MLB should copy EVERYTHING the NFL does.

This happening would be the best thing ever.
I’m drooling at the thought right now.
Seriously. Drooling.
Who is Strausburg?

Then it gives you cash
Which is just as good as money?

I agree w/ everything you say about trading picks. It a joke. Nats get number one and can’t do anything w/ it.
If the Padres can pick Strasburg you’ll def have the advantage that he’s from here and he won’t want to sit anymore time but you’re still gonna have to deal w/ Borras and it ain’t gonna be cheap to sign him.

Washington Signed Dunn...
The Nationals went out this off season and picked up a second tier free agent in Adam Dunn and the Padres sat on their thumbs. Other than Strasburg being a San Diego native, there is no reason to believe that the Padres will spring for Strasburg type dollars. I find it hard to believe that unless Stras changes agents a San Diego discount is likely to happen.
