Minor League Report 7/22/09
AAA - Portland Beavers
Portland 5 Reno 7 Box
- Hey guess what? Wade LeBlanc (L 2-8) got knocked around again. Who would have thought? Actually, he has been pretty decent in AAA. He went 6IP and gave up 7ER on 8H. He also walked 3 and gave up two HRs while only recording 2Ks to raise his ERA to 3.86.
- Josh Banks finished off the game (2IP 1H 3Ks) for the Beavers
- Despite 3 HRs the Beavers offense was not able to pick up Wade. Danny Putnam hit a 3 RBI HR to rack up 6 RBI in the last two games. Chad Huffman and Craig Stansberry added solo shots too account for the Beavers 5 runs.
AA - San Antonio Missions
San Antonio 1 Frisco 0 Box
- Ernesto Frieri (W 8-5) threw a gem in this pitchers duel going 7IP giving up only the only two hits of the game for Frisco with 7Ks and 1 BB. Brandon Gomes (1IP H 2Ks) and Evan Scribner (17th Save 1IP 2Ks) finished off the game.
- The lone Missions run was scored by a Brian Joynt sacrifice fly scoring Logan Forsythe in the second inning.
High A - Lake Elsinore Storm
Lake Elsinore 7 Lancaster 9 Box
- The Storm's pitchers didn't have their best nights. Jeremy Hefner had the start and got knocked around on 4IP 4ER 5H with 4Ks and 2 BBs. Allen Harrington (L 1-4) continued the poor pitching (2IP 4ER 6H 1BB 0Ks) and Ryan Hinson (1IP 1ER) finished off the game.
- Brad Chalk, Beamer Weems (2B), Sawyer Carroll (2B), and Matt Clark had two hits a piece for the Storm. Chalk had 2 RBI and 2 Rs, Weems, Carroll, James Darnell, and Andrew Parrino added 1 RBI each.
A - Fort Wayne Tincaps
Fort Wayne 3 Kane County 0 Box
- Another solid starting performance from Michael Watt, the pitcher we got from the Dodgers last year for Greg Maddux. He went 6IP only giving up 4H and 0ER while striking out 6 and walking none. Unfortunately, he wasn't able to get the win as the Tincaps didn't score their 3 runs until the 10th inning.
- Rob Musgrave (1IP) and Colin Lynch (W 1-1 2IP) pitcher in relief and closer Brad Brach (1IP) nailed down his 25th save of the season.
- Adam Zornes and Blake Tekotte had RBI doubles in the top of the 10th to take the late lead for the Tincaps. Allan Dykstra went hitless to drop his AVG below .200 (.198)
Rookie Teams Eugene Emeralds and AZL Padres
There was a few notable players on the rookie teams today
- Our third round pick in last month's draft, Jerry Sullivan from Oral Roberts University has pitched in 7 games but made his first start for the Emeralds. He only went 3IP and gave up 2ER on 3H with 3Ks and 2 BBs. He has a 5.93 ERA in those 7 games.
- 17 year old super prospect Adys Portillo (L 0-5) continued his poor start to his poor career. He made his 6th start and gave up 4 runs (3ER) on 5 hits while striking out 6 and walking 2. In 6 starts for the Padres he has struck out 20 in 27.1 IP but also walked 18. His opponents are hitting .327 against him.

Rookie Teams
Because nobody really knows much about the players on the Rookie teams, I’ll do more sporadic posts about them when something interesting happens or when any players have big games.

Danny Putnam
I wasn’t aware that he was in Portland until a few days ago. Nice to see he had a 3 run HR today…Ive always pulled for him since we attended Rancho Bernardo High.
Hey sdsuaztec4, Do you think there are any chances we might see him on the Padres next year? Or is the outfield too crowded and he’s most likely trade bait?

I doubt he'll ever been anything but a filler at AAA or a bench guy for the big league team
Who knows you might see him when the rosters expand this year and during Spring Training.

I'm hoping he'll be there in September
I’ll be at some games to root him on. But, considering that he’s not on 40 man currently, it seems unlikely that they’d release someone and bring him up. Still, he’s a fun guy to have on the AAA team.

nice!!
Most of my friends were class of ’00 though! I gotta say that the ’99 team was an all-time best in the San Diego section!!!
Nine of the players from that team were drafted, though not all in the same year. Wheatland and Heard, 1st rounders. 11 of them went on to play college and or minors …RB has had talent galore… to name a few…..Blalock, Wheatland, Heard, Pratt, Putnam, Caple, Giorgis, Bagley, then came Hamels, another Blalock, Dykstra …
Makes you wonder how that team lost a game, let alone 6. But i do remember they were some cocky ass Mofo’s! I would be too though! HA!

From Baseball Prospectus' Kevin Goldstein
Sleeper Alert!
Edinson Rincon, 3B, Padres (Short-season Eugene)
Wednesday’s stats: 2-for-4, HR (5), R, 5 RBIs
An 18-year-old Dominican with a quality bat, Rincon has been one of the most talked about players in the Northwest League this year. Wednesday’s game, which included his first professional grand slam, upped his season averages to .333/.432/.576 in 26 games. Athletic and strong, Rincon has an excellent approach for a teenager to go with plus power. All he needs now is to find a position, as his defense at third base is beyond rough.

Just wondering
Who the hell is Fieri? I saw him protected on the 40 man but I feel like i’ve never heard of them.

They had to protect him from the rule 5 draft
He’s been a pretty productive pitcher, but since he’s an international player that signed pretty young, he became rule 5 eligible before he got above AA (eligibility is based on the number of years since the player signed). We had a discussion about him a couple days ago. He’s not a top prospect in the system, but has never pitched poorly either. I see him as a Josh Geer/Justin Germano type.

So Tec
you lasted about 3 days.
You should make a weekly update. I bet that would be easier to keep up with.

AZL Padres
SDAztec,
I’m out in AZ to visit family and am gonna catch the AZL Padres on Sunday. Besides Cody Decker are there any other players that I should be looking out for?
I’ll relay my impressions next week when I get back in town and out of this heat!!

Cody Decker
is not really a prospect. He leads the team in HRs, but he’s 22 and in the lowest level, which is not a good sign as far as how highly the organization thinks of him. Consider him the wily vet on the team showing the kids how its done. A good guy to have around, but he’ll have to overcome some long odds to do anything for the Padres down the road.
The #1 prospect on that team is Jonathan Galvez. He’s a stud hitter in the making. He’s been making a few too many errors to play SS. But, his bat will play at 2nd or 3rd if he can clean it up a little. Plus, he’s only 18.
Rymer Liriano is also a quality prospect. He’s the team’s CF and he’s been raking (.344/.373/.510).
Cameron Monger is a little old for the league (21), but he should be fun to watch. He leads off and has 15 SBs.
Cody Adamson is a young (17) Aussie that is playing his first season stateside. He hasn’t hit well yet, but he was considered a good international signing. So far he’s been DHing.
Wande Olabisi is a Stanford grad that came from Nigeria and his Nigerian royalty. He’s a fun story, but he’s very raw. It’s my understanding that he absolutely flies when he hits top speed. He’s struggled at the plate though.
Adys Portillo and Jonathan Berger are the two top pitchers there. Portillo has had his struggles, but he’s young and scouts think very highly of him. Berger is from SDSU, gets a good amount of strikeouts and has been pretty lights out for them.
There are two pitchers that belong at higher levels that are coming back from injuries. Cesar Ramos was in Portland (AAA) earlier this year and was almost called up to the bigs before getting hurt. He’s had a tough time try to rehab his injury. Steve Garrison has also struggled a little, but his injury was more serious and it’s just a good sign that he’s out on the mound at this point. He was in San Antonio (AA) last year.
