The farm system remains a troubled area, having suffered from a three-headed monster in recent years, in which general manager Kevin Towers and his scouting director, Bill Gayton, were constantly overruled by the meddlesome ways of former president Sandy Alderson and his lieutenants, Grady Fuson and Paul DePodesta, and limited by departing owner John Moores' financial struggles.

What ankle surgery?
“The Padres balked at dealing Jake Peavy during the offseason, when teams might have still felt his contract was beneficial, and now are faced with the possibility that Peavy, who underwent ankle surgery, won’t pitch again this season. "
I was under the impression that Jake did not have ankle surgery. Am I wrong, or is this guy making it up as he goes along?
Supposed to be a HoF baseball writer, too
Looks like he phoned this one in. The only part he left out was the Anchorman reference.

Wat
The Padres jumped Latos from Double-A to the big leagues to start Sunday. Monday, they are calling on Tim Stauffer to make his second start, after being sidelined 14 months with shoulder surgery. Kevin Corriea, a released pitcher from San Francisco last December, has emerged as the rotation ace. The starting shortstop is Everth Cabrera, a winter draft from the Rockies who a year ago was playing for Low-A Asheville in the South Atlantic League.
The author writes these as all being negative, and the only one I perceive as being bad is Latos’ jump. Stauffer returning is a positive, and he even looked good his first time back. Corriea makes a very nice #3 behind Peavy and CY, if they were healthy, so what does it matter that SF released him? What does Ecab’s status last year have to do with anything? The kid is good!

Fuson, who was forced out of the Rangers front office last summer, has accepted a position as a special assistant to Padres general manager Kevin Towers.

I think he got promoted since then
Not that it’s entirely relevant. I believe his title is Vice President of Scouting and Player Development. I do not believe he works for Towers anymore since I’ve heard it been made clear that he has full autonomy to make Scouting and Player Development decisions, including picking who the Padres draft (although he shares that responsibility with Bill Gayton because he’s such a nice guy).
Memo to baseball managers: You manufacture runs by NOT making outs, not by making them on purpose.
First the "reporter" in Salt Lake
and now this guy…making up stuff about the downtrodden Padres.
When you suck, they all get in line to kick you in the nuts…
