Open Thread, 7/2: Padres vs Astros

Houston Astros at San Diego Padres, Jul 2, 2009 12:35 PM PDT

So yesterday, I was on the trolley and there were these Vietnamese students who seriously, not even kidding, looked like they were 11 or 12 years old. They were smoking cigarettes before they jumped on the trolley, so they must've been older.

In any case, they sat right next to me and the one dude that I shared a seat with fell asleep almost right away. Another kid across from him started whispering to him urgently in Vietnamese (which sounded a little bit like gibberish to me since I don't speak that culture's beautiful language). Anyways, he's whispering in this gibberish and pushing the sleeping kid's knees and elbows and shoulders and getting real close to his ears and whispering gibberish.

The whole time, I'm just trying to read my book, but I can't help but look up when the babbling kid starts slapping the sleeping kid in the face while yelling his gibberish. I'm thinking, "Dude, WTF. That is no way to behave around a sleepy person."

In any case, the sleeping kid doesn't bother looking up and the babbling kid gives up, sits back and falls asleep himself. When I looked up at him he was positioned as such that I could see directly up his nose.

Day game. Going for the series tie. Go Padres.

I am NOT going to rag on Kouzmanoff today

Because he has started to surge offensively…like he always does starting on May 14th every year. And he does it all w/one hand tied behind his back as he always swings at 1 to 2 balls out of the strike zone. Guy is amazing.

A ton of teams need a 3B

by SD Steve on Jul 2, 2009 1:09 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

According to that Fox Sports article

It’s because the two teams share a Spring Training facility so management is familiar with a lot of the Seattle prospects.

Almost every one of their top hitting prospects plays 3B

The only reason they think they need a 3B is because their manager hates young people. In fact, their top hitter in AAA right now is a 3B and they just called up a pretty decent prospect in Drew Sutton.

I’m pretty sure the Phillies are. Not being sold is still better than Woodward and Wilson and no help on the way in Seattle.

but the hit under .250 last year and I think the glove is the same and Kouz outside of Petco could be a major upgrade with the bat.

Plus Kouz seems to only be able to hit AL pitching.

So you gotta think Seattle would like that.

Though I have also thought that Philly woudl be a great place for him.

Brewers have Matt Gamel and McGehee

Those are pretty decent options compared to Kouz.

The Mariners have Chris Woodward and Josh Wilson. There is no comparison.

Headley is a full 3 years younger and has 1000 at bats less than KK...

Headley has hardly impressed but I would like to see him play a full year at third before he warrants the same criticism the that Kouzmanoff garners.

Headley vs Kouz

Headley produces like an average major leaguer
Kouz produces like a below average major leaguer

Both are supposed to be more. Both deserve criticism. But, Kouz is older and more experienced. He is closer to making a bunch of money to do something that should be easily replaced by a younger, cheaper player.

You're not doing it right

You cares about a better average if your OBP is lower?
HRs are nice, but you’ve got to do more.
RBIs are useless when evaluating future performance.

Here is a comparison of wOBA. It’s close and it’s hard to compare since Headley hasn’t played as many seasons. But in both 2008 and 2009 Headley has been a better player than Kouz.

Don’t fret it if you didn’t. Seen one ..seen them all. Swung at 3 balls out of the strike zone, eventually striking out again.

Alderson never was the GM

His job was to sign off on what KT did. Obviously, Alderson could have blocked the signing by saying that was too much to spend with their dwindling payroll, but a CEO doesn’t tell the GM to re-sign someone unless the GM already wants to do it.

Great book!

I really enjoyed the chapter about how the Astros don’t pick Jeter in the draft and instead pick Nevin.

Also that part about the Brewer factor. The groupies were just a little bit uglier, the hotels weren’t quite as nice, and the chartered jets were always a little more behind schedule.

That's fine

But I don’t think Sandy’s last efforts for the team were to do things that increased the payroll.

By the way, in regards to the Kouz vs. Headley argument from earlier

Kouz’s BA is now equal to Headley’s.

In 42 more at-bats.

by maestro876 on Jul 2, 2009 3:12 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Kouz should be kicking his ass

Although both of them are not performing. I think it’s a matter of Kouz being more of a vet, he should be performing like one. This is still Headley’s first full year.

by SD Steve on Jul 2, 2009 3:17 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yes.

Kouz is halfway through his 3rd full year and isn’t improving.

Headley barely has a full season’s worth of ABs, scattered over 3 years.

by maestro876 on Jul 2, 2009 3:19 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

He actually debuted in 2007

though he only had 18 ABs that year.

Someone offered me a cigar cave and I don't know what to do
Hi Axion,

I wanted to make sure you saw that Tony Siragusa joined with Partagas Cigar for an “Uncommon” promotion. They are giving away a $10,000 "cigar cave" to be built in one winner’s house. For guys who like to smoke cigars, but are relegated to a second class smoking area, a cigar cave could be pretty sweet. I’d be happy to send one of the special 4-packs of Partagas Black Label that contain the contest entry code if you’d like to check them out? Just let me know!
