Padres trade Cla Meredith for Oscar Salazar
Apparently we just acquired a 31yr old jack of all trades for probably (outside of Heath Bell) our best reliever available for trade. I don't get this whatsoever. This is a major case of selling low and it doesn't make any sense. Where/how/what are we going to do with a guy with singles power only who plays all over the infield??
Someone explain this to me, it makes a bad day worse on the Padres.

Meh
The Padres basically traded a reliever who the NL figured out and can’t pitch in high leverage situations for a Mark Sweeney type player who they will controll for the next 5 years…

Of course
I guess we had a glaring need for a utility player to push us over the top.
Cla was probably going into arbitration (no time to check the facts) and we couldn’t afford the increase in pay due to the high cost of the breakfast Sundays. I hear those bloody marys are quite potent.

in other words...
We traded Cla for a bench guy and a breakfast burrito.

I agree.
Cla has been done for a long time.

KT rarely keeps
mid relievers more than 1 year, much less 3 or 4.
Cla is now part of the reliever recycling program.

I'm actually surprised
That they could get anything from Cla. I know Geoff Young is all indignant because Cla is young and is a “groundball machine”. I disagree. The youth in pitchers is really irrelevant. You either can pitch or you can’t. Sure, veteran guys can figure out new ways to get guys out and younger guys can usually throw harder, but neither of those arguments have any weight with Cla. In addition, he’s hardly a groundball machine anymore. He also can’t strike people out like he used too and he’s so homer-prone that he’s virtually useless in a close game. He’s also useless against lefties. Oh, and power hitting righties. So, basically he can only pitching to contact hitting right handed batters. Like I said, I surprised we actually got a quality player in return. I’m just a little confused about how this Salazar guy fits in (in addition to the lack of confidence I have in Buddy to figure out how to use him).
Memo to baseball managers: You manufacture runs by NOT making outs, not by making them on purpose.

San Diego is a breakfast town
So there’s that regarding the burrito.

Today is a day of futility
The Padres don’t bother playing behind their new prospect
And now they trade one of our best relievers for a utility player who was DFAed

What's this singles-only business I keep hearing?
Dude’s got 8 HRs in only 133 ML ABs. That equates to thirty-some over a season.

Blame it on the Ant
I think if Antonelli didnt have his head up his ass this deal probably wouldnt have been done or at least been done as urgently. Who else could play 2nd for us? Luis Rod is quite the bag of shit and really EGon is hitting at or below .200. He’s luckier than Giles. Talk about doing Adrian a favor!! I dont have a problem with this deal. KT has done such an exceptional job with getting arms for the bullpen that we are now trading away a quality arm, go figure. Would’ve never thought this would happen last March. Lets give KT some credit for something good.
What happened to you Matthew Antonelli?!! We need to send him some Giambi panties or something

Salazar doesn't normally play 2B
He plays the corner infields and outfield positions, not 2B-SS, so if anything this doesn’t help much. He provides more depth and does decently in a pinch hitting situation, but he’s not a solution for 2B.
And why would we trade Eckstein, I don’t think anyone else is going to pay much for Eckstein anyway.

I see Salazar as a precursor
to a Kouz trade – backing up Headley. I am surprised that they did not get another player thrown in – considering he was going to be waived tomorrow. I wonder if this would have happened without Egon heading to the 14 day disabled pit.

Plenty of talent in AA and A to play second next season.

Zawadski's an interesting guy
If he can keep it up, I could see an outside shot of Lance/Everth starting up the middle for you guys next year.
As for the trade, the initial reaction was eh. As eh as Meredith is, I thought a pen arm like him might’ve netted more in return, or maybe, a younger guy in return. It’s not bad, though, but it’s eh. He was sporting some solid statistical measures. Add in the decent enough BB rate, I’m just a tad surprised it didn’t net something with more long range future.

So would you move Cabrera to 2B?
I mean he started there but unless Zawadski has some ridiculous talent at SS I’d move HIM to 2B and keep Cabrera.

Might Eckstein be traded once he comes off the DL?
Brewers acquired Felipe Lopez today to fill that hole. Who else would want a second baseman?

Sad to see him go, but he was done
We had our one glory season with him and then a combination of hitters figuring him out and his inability to keep adjusting to that caused his demise. Seemed like he gave up at least a couple of dinky ground ball hits and a run every outing. There is sentiment for him thanks to that glory year, but I have no problem with seeing him go.
