I think this is a good sign
Kouz is fairly replaceable at this point, although Headley did look rusty out there. The Mariners make sense. They are losing Beltre for the season and then they’ll lose him through free agency after the season. My recollection of their prospects is that while they have a few good ones, none of them are major league ready 3B. As far as what we get in return, I think it would be underwhelming, but we need to make room for some players who will be cheaper and probably more talented than Kouzmanoff. That isn’t to say I wouldn’t be sorry to see him go, but I’m ever sorrier that he didn’t live up to his potential.
If I were to get optimistic about the return (without turning into a Cubs fan and demanding Greg Halman, Phillip Aumont or Michael Saunders, because if those guys were up for discussion this deal would already be done) I would want Juan Ramirez. He’s one of their top 10 prospects, but has struggled a little bit. He does pitch in High Desert this year (you know the place that Lake Elsinore scored 33 runs at) so his numbers are probably a little distorted, but he’s also a young guy (almost 21) that scouts like and is already in High A. Another guy would be Michael Pineda, who is also very young (20) and is in High A, but hasn’t pitched much this year (6 G). And another is Mikael Cleto, who is even younger and working his way through the lower levels of the Mariners minor league system.

I will be shocked if the Padres could get Juan Ramirez for Kouz
my guess would be they will get a AAAA level reliever who will do well at Petco and a low A level arm, that kind of seems like KT’s MO with moves like this.
I don't know
I was reading somebody’s reaction who was well aware of Kouz’ struggles, and it was that the trade would require a B or B+ prospect. There is context here. The Mariners don’t have anyone better than Kouz, they have a high enough payroll that even a arbitration-years contract from Kouz is a drop in the bucket, they would get Kouz for like 3 years before he’s a free agent, and they are competing for a division title. All these things, as unlikely as it seems given Kouz’ recent history, puts the Padres in a pretty decent bargaining position. Ramirez, like I implied, is still the pipe dream, best case scenario, but there is definitely leverage here.

Mariners
Quit trying to be our friend. We shared Chris Burke for awhile, and that was fine… I guess… but if you take Kouz off our hands, we’re going to find it even harder to hate you.
Gawd, they’re so polite, it’s annoying. They’re like Canada.
Isn't it enough to know that I ruined a pony making a gift for you? ◔ヮ◔

We also shared Josh Wilson
And they were both former Diamondbacks too. Is there a conspiracy?

Ugh
It’s official; we’re dating the Mariners.

Andy Benes too?
How about Kevin Jarvis?

Would that result in a Moosicorn?
Or a unimoose?

why must we always go for such boring guys?
Sadly that sounds rather probable…

Actually it's not
But not for the reason you think. He’s actually part of the rotation right now, so losing him would be losing a key piece of there hopes at contending. They would much prefer to lose a minor leaguer so that the trade would be a 2009 upgrade with any costs pushed off as future losses.

He could have had Olsen
for pennies on the dollar this offseason. Towers doesn’t want the guy, or he’d already be a Padre. Plus, I don’t see anything in him that Towers would like.
