Open Thread, 7/1: Padres vs Astros
Houston Astros at San Diego Padres, Jul 1, 2009 7:05 PM PDT
You remember how in Star Trek: The Next Generation, you could ask the computer for food and it would put molecules together and create the food you asked for? I'd totally be down with that to create magical ballpark foods that people haven't thought of.
You could ask for all kinds of great things and taste them and determine if people would eat the stuff at a ballpark. Like jbox's churro dogs or my taco hot dog combinations or what not. I guess only one person could have that machine or else nobody would pay for the food once you made it. I need to rethink my stratergeries....

How many runs does Silva give up in the first two innings?
I’m afraid this will be his curtain call with the Padres.
by Padres in VA on Jul 1, 2009 6:31 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
None.
He won’t even give up a hit…we’ll all start to relax a little bit and then the wheels will just come flying off.
I fully expect double-digit scoring from the Astros tonight.

No way.
We’ll score eight runs and win. My lucky shirt says so.

Isn't it the second baseman's job to back up and the ss covers 2nd? that's what happens with
no one on base, but I don’t know when there are multiple runners on. That’s a long way for Venable to get on such a quickly thrown ball.

buddy leaves pitchers in the game too long
You would think a former pitcher would know better, have better instincts for when a pitcher is finished. Sometimes, he is the last person in the ballpark to realize when a pitcher is done.
He lets pitchers “work through their problems” or “finish the inning,” which screws the rest of the team.
by brewer090 on Jul 1, 2009 8:14 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Silva shouldn't have gotten the opportunity to pitch tonight in the first place

I just don't get it. If Kouz had made that error, you guys would be crucifying him
left and right and talking s*** up and down. Everyone is allowed to make mistakes, but why is it not okay to think that someone that plays a routine play so poorly needs to make up for it with the bat? It’s like it’s okay for him to do that because he’s young or new, etc. But if he is going to be a major league 3rd baseman for any team, much less a team I watch every night, he needs to make that play. That’s my point. And in all likelihood, he’s going to be the 3rd baseman because Kouz has trade rumors about him everywhere right now, especially with the Mariners. I want them both to stay actually but it appears unlikely.

Would you get over it? WE. ARE. F**KING. WITH. YOU.
Obviously it was a horseshit play and there isn’t a single a person on this board that isn’t disappointed in the way Headley is progressing right now. Does he need to make that play? HELL YES. Of course he needs to make that play.
Do you remember Phantom and the way he handled all the Khalil shit we pitched at that poor bastard? THAT’S the way you handle it. We bust balls in here….that’s what we do. Just because you don’t have any doesn’t make you immune. We all give it and we all take it. Pitch it back…have fun with it.

Yeah
if we save all our runs and don’t use any of them now, we can play them all against the Dodgers this weekend!

Just reading about Major League history
Back in 1979, when each league only had 2 divisions, the Montreal Expos won 95 games, and missed the playoffs. That franchise has never won more games than that. That just sucks.

They were gonna win the division
the year of the strike, too.

They had the best record in baseball.
74-40.
Then the strike happened, and the franchise has never recovered.

That's a franchise that has had even more futility than the Padres.
I think they won their division once. Lost in the NLCS to the Dodgers. Never before or since has it happened again.

Some of the taunts at my brother are embarrassing
They tried to say something about Blum winning a WS game against them and being on the team. I had to remind them about Tomy Jr.

The last two nights were fine
at least I wasn’t sure they were all terrible. Tonight was just plain pathetic. Kinda like Walter Silva (snap).

I don't think I've sat next to an intelligent fan at any ballpark
Other than the people I came with. Of course the majority of people in the world are not considered to be intelligent and the ballpark is a place that people like to dumb themselves down with alcohol, so I’m willing to bet that has something to do with it.

Seems like a keeper
Funny, I saw a couple of at bats in the CWS and didn’t think much of them. Of course, I saw even more of Tekotte last year didn’t think much of those either. Small sample size, the “scouts” enemy.
