Around SBN: Nevin Shapiro Vows To Bring Down Miami

Unofficial Day 1 Draft Day Thread

Looks like were about to get under way.  Corey Brock just broke the news that the Pads have cleared a spot on the 40 man.  Could it be for Tate?

It looks like if the Padres pass on Tate they would be looking at Crow or Matzek

Draft starts at 2:45 on mlb.com.  You can also catch it on the mlb channel.

Paul Dipo will be updating his blog to give us war room insight as well.

Let's Go Padres!!

But whoever we do get 1st overall, I look forward to reading about their future Tommy John’s operation.

From Depo
Donavan Tate, OF from Cartersville HS in Georgia

There has been a lot of speculation surrounding this pick over the past few weeks, but Tate has always been in the front of our minds. He is a potential 5-tool player who plays in the middle of the diamond and is probably the best athlete in the draft.

We’re taking our shot.

asked Padres Scouting Director Bill “Chief” Gayton before yesterday’s game if they would promote Stras to the bigs in 2009 if they had drafted him. He said that since the negotiation will probably go on until Aug 15 and that will mean a lot of time Stras won’t be pitching competitively that they would probably keep him in Peoria to get his work in.

I assume the Nationals will be thinking the same way, with possibly some late September innings as a Jimmy Dugan “wave my little cap” sort of thing.

And I don’t think there is any question that the contract negotiations will take a while. I think the Pirates said that last year with Alvarez, Boras didn’t even return their calls until the second week of August.

http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/events/draft/y2009/reports.jsp?content=williams

Hitting Ability: Williams swings the bat well, but he swings through the ball a lot. His strikeout rate is a bit of a concern. He tries to pull the ball too much.
Power: He can hit the ball out, but he’s more of a gap hitter.
Running speed: He’s not a burner, but he is a plus runner.
Base running: Can use his speed on the bases.
Arm strength: Has a below-average, maybe fringy-average at best, arm. It’s good enough for center field.
Fielding: He’s a good defender, reacts and tracks the ball well.
Range: He can go get the ball and uses his speed for plus range.
Physical Description: Williams is a small, but physically mature outfielder. He’s well-built, slightly bow-legged and has basically looked the same since he started high school.
Medical Update: Healthy.
Strengths: Has a good — if not spectucular — skill set, highlighted by excellent speed and plus range in the outfield. He does have some polish to his game.
Weaknesses: The biggest question is if he’ll hit enough.
Summary: Williams is a toolsy high school outfielder with some polish to his game. He’s got excellent speed, but he’s not a burner. He uses his speed well to play a good defensive center field and overall has enough skills to be an everyday guy at the next level. The one question, and it’s a big one, is if he’ll hit enough at the next level. Those who think he will might take a chance in June; those who aren’t sure won’t be as enamored because he doesn’t have that blazing speed.

JERRY SULLIVAN, RHP, ORAL ROBERTS

Sullivan has won all-conference honors and led Oral Roberts to the Summit League regular-season and tournament championships in each of his three college seasons, but coaches and scouts think he may just be scratching the surface of his potential. A top high school prospect for the 2006 draft before Tommy John surgery in November 2005 caused him to miss his senior season, Sullivan offers a nice combination of present stuff and future projection. His fastball sits in low 90s and touches 94 mph, and he does a good job of using his 6-foot-4, 220-pound frame to throw it downhill. His heater also features armside run, and he usually commands it well. He’s still working on the consistency of his secondary pitches. When he’s at his best, his slider is a slightly above-average pitch and his changeup is a plus offering. A strong, well-conditioned athlete, he repeats his delivery well and throws strikes. Sullivan, who has pitched well in two summers in the Cape Cod League, slumped slightly as a sophomore before bouncing back this spring. A potential No. 3 starter in the majors, he figures to get drafted between the third and fifth rounds.
