I remember in the late 80s
Bruce Hurst, Ed Whitson, etc. had the best pickoff moves in the game.
Best Bruce Hurst story...
In ’92 when the Padres were playing the Reds….Bip Roberts hit a double off of Hurst and made a big deal of it after reaching base. Bip, between tours with the Padres, was well-known to be a tin man…Hurst screamed at him “Play in a 100 games and then pop off, Meat!” Awesome.

made about 20 pitches that inning. Isn’t locating very well. Padres can’t capitalize yet.

For single-A Lake Elsinore, after seven, Luis Rodriguez is 1-3. Rodriguez, according to the U-T is due back in the Padres lineup in the next couple of days. Everth Cabrera, who started at second for the second game in a row, is 1-3 with a walk, two runs, two RBIs and a stolen base. Cabrera is not eligible to come off the DL until June 19.
For triple-A Portland, Mike Baxter, who had been tearing up the double-A Texas League with San Antonio this year, is 2-4 with a double and two RBIs in his second start since being called up.

Got back from the game. Craziest game I have ever been to
Eastbay and I were there, and it was just crazy. The craziest part of it was that right before Eck came up to bat in the 8th, I turned to her and said "What are the chances Eck can get a three run shot here to tie it up? And then it happened.
Then in the bottom of the 17th, we were discussing who was going to pitch next because we were sitting near the bullpen and nobody was in it. We realized that Josh Wilson could pitch but were trying to debate where Blanco could play on the infield. I said “Josh Wilson comes in to pitch, Burke moves back to short, and Blanco plays third.” I never thought that would actually happen. Then when the inning started and she said “Wilson is pitching.” And then I asked, so is Blanco at third? Yup. Wow unbelievable.
It also seems as if Kouz has only hit a home run if I am there (last two I have been there) and unfortunately Headley strikes out three or more times when I am there, too. He made a great catch but he looked AWFUL at the plate. Kouz also had two very near misses, definitely hit the ball hard.
CRAZY CRAZY game. I know c8LN stayed for the whole thing, too, saw her as one of the few left in her section.

Regarding Kouz only hitting HRs when she is there. She asked does she have to come to every game now and I said yes.

I was there too
I didn’t really think about Wilson pitching, but I did see Hank go out to 3B and wonder what was up. Burke went out to SS and I started wondering if Wilson got hurt or something. Then it was pointed out to me that he was chatting with Hundley and I finally figured out what was up. I then had to explain what was going on to the (few) people around me.
I also wasn’t as clairvoyant about Eck. I was envisioning a Burke liner for a HR like in the playoffs in 2005. Unfortunately, there are no Crawford Boxes at Petco and Burke can barely hit the ball 5 ft off the ground anymore. Way to go Eck and kdukat! Way to make me watch the Padres get no hit for 9 innings when I could have just gone home 3 hours earlier.
Memo to baseball managers: You manufacture runs by NOT making outs, not by making them on purpose.
