San Diego Padres fans are going to be allowed to watch the San Diego Padres
The Sports Business Journal is reporting that the Padres are going to begin allowing in market streaming of the broadcasts. This is a remarkable thing. For those of who who are on Cox or out of town, San Diego's mid-sized media market was being made even less than mid-sized by the fact that the Padres weren't allowed on all cable providers and people who wanted to purchase MLBTV to watch the games online weren't allowed to because they were in market, even if they weren't able to actually subscribe to Cox if they wanted to.
It was a terrificly bad way to do things that apparently is getting fixed.
We'll see how well it gets fixed shortly. Until then, I welcome the new bitter fans that will finally be able to see the product that the rest of us have been depressing ourselves over.

This is excellent
I’m curious to see who is going to benefit more from the 50/50 deal, but it sounds like it will be MLB AM. In my particular case, Cox is also providing my bandwidth, so they’re paying to deliver to themselves. I wonder what MLB AM’s margin is. Honestly I think $50 may be a bargain for what bandwidth may be costing them, even with more ad revenue and splitting the cost with the locals.

Market streaming of Padres broadcasts
Dex, I appreciate the sarcasm (…the new bitter fans that will finally be able to see the product that the rest of us have been depressing ourselves over…) but understand that for someone who has followed the Pads for forty years regardless of the losses, regardless of where I’ve lived, this is indeed a good thing. Just because we have to follow the games via boxscore on our PCs doesn’t mean we don’t agonize each time Silva or Meredith takes the mound. Now I can better suffer the slings and arrows that come to a Padres diehard in Giants country.

Actually...
It sounds as if this is going to work for people who have Cox internet within San Diego only. I say that only because of the phrases “local streaming” and “local market” used in the Sports Business Journal and Yahoo articles, respectively.
I could have sworn I’d seen ads in the past during games for this very service, something to the effect of being able to watch the Padres for free online if you’re a Cox subscriber…I guess this is supplanting that service.
$50 to basically dance around the mlb.tv blackout restrictions seems slightly steep – they should instead wrap this into standard mlb.tv subscriptions as an add-on, like HBO is for cable.
