Game Thread: 6/25, Padres vs. Mariners

San Diego Padres at Seattle Mariners, Jun 25, 2009 1:40 PM PDT

Good thing I programmed all of these Game Threads at the beginning of the week.  I didn't even know there was a game going on right now.

I should be listening to the game, but I'm listening to a U2 concert in Chicago from '87.  Bono is doing that Rolling Stones medley at the end of Bad.

Go Padres!!

Love the effort

Padres are 9-10 in day games. Not good you say? Well that .474 Winning % is higher than their season Winning percentage of .443.

ERA is 4.20 in day games vs 4.61 for the season.

They also have a higher BA and SLG%, but their OBP is lower.

ECab is leading off. Blanks is at 1B with AGon DHing.

Edgar Gonzalez has some pictures of Buddy or something because he’s in the lineup out in RF. Oh, brother.

Tony Gwynn has the day off.

Stick that in your copy and paste it.

Career vs LHP

Gwynn: .295/.348/.328
EGon: .263/.331/.391

Gwynn gets on base better against lefties, EGon has more power. Gwynn has 0 SBs vs LHP.

I have to believe he’s struggling with the transition to the majors. He’s not executing his pitches because he’s not focused, not because he’s not talented enough. Neither problem helps in the short term, but if it’s a nerves thing, hopefully he can get over that.

That if does well there he could be ready for the major leagues next year. Or at least that seems to be the Padres MO as our top prospects seem to only spend have a season in AAA.

It was never up to Alderson either. CEO’s don’t really get involved with those kind of details.

I was thinking it was more of a Moores budget thing

not wanting to start younger players clock when they dont have too.

by Grey Suit on Jun 25, 2009 2:40 PM PDT up reply actions

Headley and Blanks

Both needed to learn new positions. I’m not even sure Blanks will stay up with the team once they are done with interleague. Blanks is also very young for making his debut. Headley had barely played in AAA. Headley was a little more of an interesting case because there was an obvious opening at his new position and the team was supposed to be competitive. But, there’s really no reason to rush those types of players.

Memo to baseball managers: You manufacture runs by NOT making outs, not by making them on purpose.

by Wonko on Jun 25, 2009 2:45 PM PDT up reply actions

can either of them pitch?

cuz we need some of that. Plus imagine how scary Blanks would be on the bump

by 1210pads on Jun 25, 2009 2:48 PM PDT up reply actions

Headley could have started in LF by may of last year

but they kept him down in AAA until he passed the point where he would not get a full year of ML service time.

They could have worked with blanks in LF over the off season (like they did with Headly) and started him out in LF to begin the year in AAA but they chose to drag thier feet.

by Grey Suit on Jun 25, 2009 2:51 PM PDT up reply actions

That is partially true

But I have yet to see any real benefit that came from bringing up Chase last year.

Memo to baseball managers: You manufacture runs by NOT making outs, not by making them on purpose.

by Wonko on Jun 25, 2009 3:08 PM PDT up reply actions

Sure there was it gave him exposure to MLB pitching

It gave other teams a chance to adjust to him, and now he needs to adjust to MLB pitchers. If he starts to hit again towards the end of the season then we know he can play at the MLB level, if he is still struggling then the padres know going into the 2010 season that they need to find a LF or 3B (if they trade Kouz). If they didn’t bring him up last year his status at the end of this year would still be up in the air.

by Grey Suit on Jun 25, 2009 3:14 PM PDT up reply actions

But wouldn't it be preferable

For him to get polished in AAA and come up more ready to contribute? Because, to me nothing is decided about him because his bat and glove aren’t ready. Ideally you’d want to make a decision soon about whether to buy out his arbitration years with a long term contract like the Padres did with Adrian and Peavy or the DBacks did with Chris Young (the CF). Instead, you have this guy who is still learning to hit left handed pitching, is liability in LF and rusty at 3B. Unless you are in need of having a position filled at the big league level, most players are going to need at least a year at AAA before being major league ready, there is a lot to learn there that if you try to do make them do it in the majors you’re basically hurting your future payroll since they will be arbitration eligible by the time they figure it all out.
