Musings on the Latrine and Dodgers fans

So I’ve been following glb for a few years now, and feel like its about time I contribute something instead of just freeloading entertainment at work. Before i continue, i want to make it clear to all that I hate, check that, I despise the Dodgers and like their fans even less. I have never wasted an opportunity to say something nasty to anyone I see with Dodger gear on. I don’t let cars with LA bumper stickers merge in front of me on the free way (which is often considering i go to school and work in LA County). I have literally burnt a friends Dodgers hat to ashes.

Naturally I was really excited to see the Pads would be playing up here this past week and instantly made plans to go to both games at the Latrine. Now, when I said I bought tickets for both games, I was realistically expecting to be watching the second game from a comfortable hospital bead (lets just say I have an uncanny ability to make opposing fans angry, I almost got jumped by a little old lady at the D-bags game at Petco last week for calling her blanket a towel). You see, i naturally had the image of all dodger fans as what we see at Petco, you know the ones that get plastered, angry, violent, etc. Let’s just say I’ve had my life threatened at several Pads-Dodger games in SD.

After the series, and in one piece I have to admit I had a pleasant experience at the games and am a little jealous of their fan base. Before I’m crucified let me explain. On Tuesday night, me and another Pads fan who drove up from SD for the games sat in the dreaded Left Field aka MannyWould (do steroids). From everything i heard, these fans would be vicious, and make my life hell which I was totally pumped for. Got to the game around 6:45, there were probably 6 other people there (that whole late thing is something I don’t envy at all). By game time rolled around, it was filling up (36,000 on a Tuesday night, i think we average like 14,000 on those nights) we got into some friendly banter with a few fans behind us, joking around about "Manny the tranny", Russell Martin being Alyssa Milano's catcher, stealing on CY, the basics. I’m not gonna lie the dudes were funny and knew their stuff.

*Observation 1: almost everyone there wore Dodgers gear, a hat, jersey, t-shirt, or jacket. . . just repping their team. The accepted dress code at Petco is a dress shit, v neck sweater and khakis. That lack of city or team pride at Petco gets me going every time. Back to the game...

Pads jump out to a quick 2-0 lead and if TG2 didn’t throw 4 pump fakes before trying to steal 3rd it would have been 3. Bot 1, Chase trots out to play Left and the fans waste no time getting on him. While the 80 year old grandma yelling to Headley about giving her "Head" and requesting to know if Chase spits or swallows, is really creepy especially when she’s holding a random five year old in her lap, and the revelation that the average Dodger fans cannot construct a sentence without using the word "Suck", I appreciated that the fans were actually into the game.

* Observation 2: everyone there knew what was happening and was loud and into what was going on, instead of reading there novels during the game and spending 3 innings in a sushi bar at the stadium. Also, their fans don’t need a scoreboard effect or the pad squad to tell them when to cheer.

* Observation 3: Latrine staff actually let you cheer. I have been asked to "pipe" down for cheering and asked to watch my language for saying the word "blow" at Petco.

We know what happens after the first, CY pitches homerun derby for a few innings. We try to come back before Giles (inexplicably hitting 3rd) chokes on his batting gloves in the 9th. We lose. I get to hear it on my way out.

Come back Wednesday night, Latrine ugly as ever, sit top deck. Again funny guys in front of us, who were nice enough to share there smuggled in Vodka with some girls that were with us. While they claimed they would be jumping us if they hadn’t been arrested at the stadium the week before, they were decent enough. They even had my back for yelling at a guy wearing a yankees hat (my pet peeve, random teams stuff to a game), and making fun of a Jesus look a like (even though he was a fan of the Dodgers of the Nazareth). Highlight of the night was convincing said Jesus look a like he could walk on empty seats like he could on water, only to watch him stumble and plummet three rows only to be handcuffed minutes later. Pads go up early, Correia is a stud. I get to get mine and spend the rest of the game yelling at Dodgers fans, except the ones with face tats.

*Observation 4: their fans can take some trash talk and like the banter. I have heard very little legit back and forth trash talk at Petco.

So ya, all in all. Good few days. Pretty fun baseball too. I hope someday Petco can have that atmosphere and 40,000 on a Wednesday in our beautiful ballpark.

*Observation 5: The Latrine is awful. Worst stadium layout ever, just awful and ugly and bad.

SD can be a bit mellow

I live in SF, so only get my 9-10 games a year, but my visits to Petco does make it feel very much like a family-friendly production, rather than true fan energy. Maybe that is not that bad, but as much as I get annoyed with the “dedication” tributes to NYY, BOS and Cub fans (yo NY, Boston and Chi fans; try being a dedicated SD fan over the decades; only Cleveland and Seattle can probably relate to sustained futility) they do have engaged, knowledgeable fans.

family friendly?

never really understood that term, families looked like they were having a good time at dodger stadium. I probably go to 35+ games at Petco a year, and to me it feels like a day care center most of the time

ive been everywhere at Petco

i guess im just jeaulous i guess. Its hard to be a rabid diehard fan when your surrounded by people who for the most part are just at teh game to be at the game. I dont know if anyone saw the Yankees-RedSox game a day ago where all of fenway was chanting “YOU DO STEROIDS” when A-roid was batting in the 9th. At petco we instead are subject to hat shuffles and “little stars”.

What does being a rabid diehard fan

Have to do with chanting stupid things at the opposing players?

I think it shows they're obviously into the game

Regardless of what they might be cheering, at least they’re into it. For example, you hardly ever hear “Let’s Go Padres” being chanted at a game unless it’s in response to opposing fans starting a “Let’s go” chant.

by Dex on Jun 12, 2009 2:52 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

It seems to me

That they are more into harassing a single person than they are into the game. But, I suppose they aren’t mutually exclusive. I find that the chanting is related to the product on the field. If the Padres saw the kinds of success that other teams do (and not just slightly above .500 seasons that result in division titles) the chanting would come on its own. I’ve bagged a lot of stadiums now and there aren’t many that I’ve been to that start their own cheers. It’s mostly prompted by scoreboards everywhere. I’ve heard that they are better in some places, but, for example, when I went to Fenway the fans were more concerned with where their next beer was coming from than what was going on in the game.

Where do they go?

“That they are more into harassing a single person than they are into the game. " you sound like a high school principle. I know it comes with winning.

I remember Qualcomm handing out ear plugs for the ’98 Braves playoffs series. Where have all those fans gone. I know it comes with winning but fans should be fans.

I too have been to many stadiums and Petco is easily the most gimmick oriented.

by 1210pads on Jun 12, 2009 3:08 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

What additional gimmicks does Petco have?

Almost every stadium I’ve gone to recently has some sort of shuffle-thing, they also have a trivia thing, a lot have the “Let’s Make a Deal” type game and most have some sort of race-thing on the scoreboard (although I think Petco got rid of that this year).

I don’t think I sounded like a high school principal there, just a fan that likes watching a baseball game more than taunting another player with uncreative chants. I don’t consider those people anymore diehard or rabid because they can chime in on a chant like sheep being led to the slaughter. Just because you’re a diehard doesn’t mean you have to be classless doing it.

haha, i guess im not winning many fans with my post. But from the “little star” in the fourh inning which gets more applause than a base knock or nice play, the pad squad cheerleaders running around the upper deck to bribe people cheer, the applause-o-meter or hat shuffle.

Im just saying, at the next game you go to at Petco you’ll notice people are louder for the hat shuffle or make a deal than they are any other time of the actual game.

I've been to Dodger stadium too

But I went when the fans weren’t expecting as much out of their as this year. Observation 2 did not hold when I was there.

Observation 3 is not a plus for the Dodger fans. If you can’t cheer without saying “suck” or “blow” or some more offensive words, then consider yourself lucky that natural selection hasn’t found you yet.

Observation 4 is something I can do without. I’m there to watch some baseball, not listen to some opposing fans’ antics.

Observation 5 I don’t get. Dodger Stadium is a pretty well laid out park with good seats all around, concessions if you need ‘em, bathrooms aren’t too terrible. The parking is horrid, but it’s only because their current owner decided to make it that way (it used to work better I’m told) and the stadium was built during a time when public transit wasn’t the cool thing.

Observation 1 is helped by my theory that since the Dodgers don’t change their jerseys it looks like more of their fans are decked out, it’s like they are in a cult all wearing the same thing. The team colored fans probably still outnumber those at Petco, but I know that the constant color scheme helps. Also, not all the fans at Petco are Padre fans, we have a lot of transplants here.

Rumor has it

all the players will be forced to grow “Moorad beards” next year in an attempt to terrify the opposing teams into submission. Needless to say it works and the Padres go 162-0 but get swept by the Cardinals in the first round as Ray Lankford, Jim Edmonds & the recently retired Khalil Greene come out of retirement and hit a combined 15 home runs against us. The following year the team tries a new strategy…….the “Scan hairdo”.

i even have pics of a dodger fan sitting next to me whose face was all beat up, i kept asking why he stays with his abusive boyfriend and he kept telling me i was ‘too intense to be a padres fan’

Minority experience

You do know that these are the same idiots voting Manny into the ASG, right?

Ob1: It helps to sell gear when you think you look like a phony gang-banger. Trust me, none of those half-wits “representin’” can name their own starting rotation.

Ob2: Cute, but not based in reality. Nice try, though.

Ob3: The staff is petrified into doing nothing. Seriously, try to get some help from them, they’re worthless.

Ob4: I’ve never met a fan visiting Petco that could talk legit trash. Ever. They have their one line where they cleverly rhyme Jake with Fake and they’re done. More often than not, I’m telling them who is on their roster when there’s a pitching change.

It’s pretty unrealistic to expect San Diego to show the same showing as LA when there’s about a third of the people, not half the history, and coming off a season where the fans have soured. But I’m glad you had a nice time, although it sure as hell is not a common experience, much less a universal one.

A Dodger fan's perspective on SD fans and Petco

I appreciate an opposing fan being able to give an honest and not biased impression of Dodger Stadium. I’m a Dodger fan and I’ve been to Petco before when the Dodgers were playing there.

The game that I watched was during a season when the Pads were doing well and we were mired in mediocrity. I think we finished 3rd that season. Me and some friends sat on that lawn area you guys have beyond the outfield. It was a weekend game so it was reasonably full, and I must say there were a lot of Dodger fans there wearing Dodger gear. However, I don’t remember noticing that Pads fans didn’t represent their team by wearing gear. A lot of the fans seemed to at least be wearing Pads hats and vocally representing their team well (maybe it was because it was a winning season for you guys). I’m a pretty vocal fan so I was talking smack most of the time but park attendants never gave me so much as a warning. I do refrain from using curse words so I didn’t get into any fights, but the fans around us were very vocal in talking smack right back. I kept the smack talk PG though so it was all good, more of a friendly rivalry type atmosphere than outright hatred. The fans for the most part new exactly what was going on during the game, it was a game in which Randy Wolf couldn’t throw a strike and in fact it was the game that Trevor Hoffman got the record breaking save. So all the pads fans were pretty excited and definitely gave me a lot of grief. But I did get the feeling they appreciated my intensity because it gave them an opportunity to be intense back. I’m glad that even though you’re a Pad fan you can appreciate the fanbase of the Dodgers, and to be honest I’m surprised to hear that Pads fans are too laid back, don’t pay attention to the game, can’t cheer or don’t represent their team gear. That wasn’t the impression I got at my visit to Petco, but it was a weekend game, and Hoffman breaking the record and your team actually being in 1st that season may have been a factor.

How refreshing!

To read another objective and fair review of a different team’s fan experience at Dodger Stadium. I took notice that the words “Stab,” “Shank,” “Pierce,” “Gouge,” “Prison-Style”or “Murder” only appeared once during this thread, so I believe that congratulations are in order for Mayor Villaraigosa and Police Chief William J. Bratton for their 2009 efforts to reduce fan-on-fan crime in the City of Angels.

Also of importance is that the word “Latrine” was mentioned seven times here, so it seems as though you all have noticed and are appreciating all the additional bathrooms installed at Dodger Stadium in addition to the other significant renovations that began in 2005. A tip of the ol’ chapeau’ should go in the direction of team owner Frank McCourt for those new beauties!

All in all, we’re so glad that you enjoyed your experience at historical Dodger Stadium, and we hope you can come back real soon!
