Open Thread, 6/10: Padres vs Dodgers vs Beachballs
San Diego Padres at Los Angeles Dodgers, Jun 10, 2009 7:10 PM PDT
That's a lame beachball dig at the Dodgers. It's lame because it's all I've got.
Kevin Correia goes for us today on three days rest . The last insult to the injury of the 18th inning loss to the Diamondbacks. At least we'll be able to tell if Correia has the makeup to help out in a short series should the Padres make the playo-HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. Oh man. I almost made it through the sentence without laughing.
By now you've had the chance to observe a couple of days worth of MLB Draft action. Thanks to Wonko and SD Steve for facilitating the whole thing.
I'm predicting a win tonight. I have no good reason for this prediction other than I feel it in my gut.

I don't really see him as high risk
At least not anymore risk than most of the other top talents in the draft this year.

He's definitely doing better

We're out here having fun/
in the warm, California sun
which leadoff man is more surprising?
Gwynn or Pierre?
Are either that surprising?
Most major leaguers are capable of short spurts of good hitting.
Memo to baseball managers: You manufacture runs by NOT making outs, not by making them on purpose.
Not incredibly surprising
But still. Juan Pierre doing this, even for a third of a season, might be the most surprising individual story of the season. I could be wrong, of course.
If it was for a third of a season that would be more impressive
But it hasn’t been that long. I think it’s been for about a fifth of the season.
Memo to baseball managers: You manufacture runs by NOT making outs, not by making them on purpose.
i've got pierre
at 53 games, and the dodgers at 60.
I got him starting
about 30 games since Manny got suspended. Everything else was as a part time role.
Memo to baseball managers: You manufacture runs by NOT making outs, not by making them on purpose.
But I guess one has to be more surprising than the other
I’ll say Gwynn since he’s never hit like this in the big leagues before, whereas Pierre probably has had a stretch like this before.
Memo to baseball managers: You manufacture runs by NOT making outs, not by making them on purpose.
I can see that.
Although Pierre has done it for three times the at-bats.
He wasn't terrible
He just didn’t deserve as much money as the Dodgers gave him. The Dodgers also had a bevy of prospects coming up and the finances to get other hitters. So, he looks terrible because he causes the Dodgers a bevy of roster problems.
Memo to baseball managers: You manufacture runs by NOT making outs, not by making them on purpose.
wow
I used bevy twice. That was dumb.
Memo to baseball managers: You manufacture runs by NOT making outs, not by making them on purpose.
his two previous years before the contract
his on-base percentage was below league average. maybe he wasn’t terrible. but he was below average.
Batting .300
doesn’t do you much good if you can’t get your OBP above league average. He also gets CSed a lot more than he should.
I forgot the other reason he has looked terrible as a Dodger. He should never, ever, ever lead off. Ever. He will damage your run production if he does.
Memo to baseball managers: You manufacture runs by NOT making outs, not by making them on purpose.
his 204 hits in 2006
might be the worst 200-hit season ever, because he can’t walk or hit for for power. It was an empty 200 hits.
From what Ted is making it sound like on the radio
the umpiring has, again, been horrible.

I don't think so
Torre thinks he needs to manage this like a playoff game. So he’s trying to make sure no more runs are scored.
Memo to baseball managers: You manufacture runs by NOT making outs, not by making them on purpose.
Why would he manage this like a playoff game?
Doesn’t he know Correia will give back whatever runs we score here?

Wow
A strikeout! Thank you, Mr. Blue. Thank you, Mr. Furcal. That was a team effort that had little to do with Greg Burke.

It helped
That Blake didn’t even come close to the bag on his slide.

Especially
because it meant that Kouz didn’t need to apply the tag near the bag. Because he would have had a hard time doing that.

And the best part?
I no longer have to watch Burke pitch tonight.

Mujica isn’t going to 2 innings here. And don’t you want to PH with Floyd because now you can’t. What are we paying Floyd for again.

The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the iniquities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he, who in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of darkness, for he is truly his brother’s keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who would attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know my name is the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon thee.
