Time to terminate the Giles experiment

You don’t put your worst hitter in one of the top three spots in the lineup hoping he gets hot and you can trade him.

by dontkickthebaby on May 9, 2009 4:05 PM PDT reply actions

How do the other players feel

When their club is more intent on getting a slug like Giles at-bats than on winning?

by dontkickthebaby on May 9, 2009 4:11 PM PDT reply actions

Anyone, even Gerut.

But the fact is they should already be planning for this and getting Blanks OF playing time in AAA. Fuck, give Durango a big promotion from AA

by dontkickthebaby on May 9, 2009 4:14 PM PDT up reply actions

And

your saying that those guys with no experience in the majors would have a better chance of getting hits then Brian? He’s just going through a slump.

by whithd3 on May 9, 2009 4:17 PM PDT up reply actions

No he's not

He’s showing why Manny Ramirez risked getting caught. Giles hit .220 in spring training, .160 in April and .150-something this month. The guy’s done.

by dontkickthebaby on May 9, 2009 4:19 PM PDT up reply actions

Performance-enhancing pharmaceuticals

help 30-something guys get around on pitches. Hitting a baseball flying at you at 90mph is one of the most difficult athletic tasks in pro sports. Once your body slows down just a little, well, just look at Giles.

by dontkickthebaby on May 9, 2009 4:22 PM PDT up reply actions

Fine then

maybe he is done, but you can’t say he is the only reason why we are not winning.

by whithd3 on May 9, 2009 4:21 PM PDT up reply actions

You're right

This team has a lot of mediocrity, but when everyone on the team realizes the manager’s No. 1 priority is to give a .150 batter more at-bats — and not winning — I think a cancer then spreads through the dugout.

Do you think

Correia bought himself another two weeks on the roster? 6 innings, two earned runs, hits for a double and the only Padre to cross the plate.
I’m inclined to say yes.

by unclemoe on May 9, 2009 6:01 PM PDT reply actions

Well, when Baek is ready to come back, you have to send someone somewhere to make room for him

So you either move Correia to bullpen (and send a reliever down), or send Geer back down. So I think it really comes down to choosing between him and Geer. I don’t know what’s going to happen. You also have Floyd nearing return if all goes well, so then they plan to go back down to 12 pitchers and that means another reliever goes somewhere. My guess is that may be Moreno and or Lopez. It all depends on what they do with Correia. I think he did much better tonight and it’s a tough decision. Geer has done well, too. But it’s clear Baek is going to be in the rotation.

by kdukat on May 9, 2009 6:06 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, no doubt

that Baek’s getting plugged back into the starting five and probably dropping Correia out of that spot. I just thought, with the decent job he did today and the seeming reluctance to send any pitcher down, that he got out of a trip to Portland for at least a little while.
Of course, that means he’ll probably get shelled in a relief appearance and leave everyone saying “he looked like he was coming around with this last outing”.

isn’t even trying to win; what a fucking idiot.

Who was Black waving back?

He didn’t want Kooz in the huddle?

Stop defending Buddy, Mud.

Jesus Lopez.

I'm with Mud on this one...

he has a 2nd lowest payroll slapped together bullpen no 3 thru 5 pitcher AAAA team to work with

Me too. He only has what he has to work with. As much as you all would like Heath to pitch 2-3

innings every night, he can’t. There is no one else in the bullpen of worth right now that does well consistently. That’s why it wouldn’t be so bad if Correia was in the bullpen if Baek is in rotation.

by kdukat on May 9, 2009 7:07 PM PDT up reply actions

I'm not saying he should be some kind of miracle worker and have them in contention.

But Giles leading off in the slump he’s in? Bringing Cla in instead of The Heat? I mean, come on.

Does he have a lot to work with? No. But don’t fuck up what little you have.

by Drama on May 9, 2009 7:07 PM PDT up reply actions

kdukat

“2 – 3 innings every night”???

Heath Bell has pitched exactly THREE innings TOTAL over the last ELEVEN days.

by Drama on May 9, 2009 7:10 PM PDT up reply actions

Listen.

I agree that the guys with the responsibilty to bring the game from the starters to Bell have been terrible. I know that. But Bell barely ever pitches. Tonight would have been the perfect night to go two innings. I don’t want to burn him either…but tonight was a mistake.

by Drama on May 9, 2009 7:13 PM PDT up reply actions

I was wanting Bud to bring in Heat

even though I knew it was the wrong thing to do. The rest of the pen has to step up. If not – see ya…

Here's what I think.

I think the front office decided this was a lost season no matter what. They had no faith in Black, and decided to keep him for the last year of his contract so they wouldn’t have to pay him to not manage. And they didn’t care about his managing skills, because this was a lost season anyway, so who cares if he can get the club to win or not.

right on the money

That centerfield

is a joke. And the Padres keep hitting the ball to dead center. Those are homeruns in PETCO for God’s sake.

Kinda amusing

Aren’t many places where you can say “Those are homeruns in PETCO”

Great managing

Give your worst hitter the most at-bats. Put your worst hitter in the one spot where his automatic outs are sure to do the most damage.

Hello offense, goodbye bullpen?

its like one part of this team always sucks for a while, then when they come around the other team has already been lulled to suck and forget to come out and perform.

One of three things will happen:
- Giles will be allowed to continue to suck
- Giles will slump so bad that he will be supplanted by gerut / venable / blanks
- Giles will come out of his slump and have another top 10 OBP year

So, we have a 2/3 chance to do well, not too bad.

If Giles is gonna be in the Top 10 of anythng

he’s gonna have to have a better summer than Michael Effin’ Phelps did last year.

Michael Phelps had an AMAZING summer.

But I’m going to guess that his winter and spring were even better. Hey now!
