"He wants to pitch in the National League," Hoffman said. "This is just San Diego's way to force it, by airing it out, make him look bad. To do it the way they did, they're trying to force his hand."

And I think Hoffman

is a big baby and is as much to blame for how his departure went down as the FO is.

WOW!

Bitter much? I love Trevor, but he should keep his mouth shut about things going on with the Padres. Just enjoy the fact that you’re having a great year. Doesn’t mean he’s wrong though :)

Unapologetic Trevor Hoffman apologist.

Hoffy's Right

Though I expected more class from Trevor in terms of commenting on matters of former teams and teammates, etc., he is right in that the Padres have handled the Peavy situation so badly; it’s embarrassing to watch the manner in which they have shopped around their only viable trading chip.

In the case of the White Sox, they always knew he wouldn’t go there so why publicly announce that the ball’s in his court, if for no other reason than to make him look like a chump when he says no?

Not to mention the fact that the Padres are actually currently WINNING. How do you symbolically throw in the towel for good, this early in the season, when your team is on a 6-game winning streak and nearly tied for 2nd place in the division?

These clowns in the front office never cease to amaze me, so far the Moorad group has yet to impress, or completely get a handle on the operations of the club?

by MarshmeloMartinez on May 22, 2009 12:53 PM PDT reply actions

Hoffy is wrong.

How are they trying to force his hand? They are fully aware of his no trade clause and I don’t get why shopping an expensive pitcher around when your club is at about a 45million dollar payroll is embarrassing.

So what you’re saying is that the Padres, knowing full well that Peavy would not accept the trade to the White Sox, spent time and effort in negotiations, all to make their marquee attraction look bad?

Yes, we are NEARLY in second place. Sitting within striking distance of first place at 10 games back. 10 games back from the best team in baseball WITHOUT Manny. Were not winning the division so lets just enjoy what we can from this season and look to the future. And give Moorad and Co. more than a few months to turn this trainwreck around?

Hate to say it, but this is a total dick move on Hoffy’s part. Look Hoffy, breakups are hard. But you come across as callow and weak when you badmouth the ex.

no

it pisses me off, too

DODGERS, RED SOX, YANKEES, BRONCOS, PATRIOTS and RAIDERS all suck. Especially the Dodgers.

by LJbumfool on May 22, 2009 3:13 PM PDT up reply actions

...what I'm saying is...

…the Padres, knowing full well that Peavy would not accept the trade to the White Sox, WASTED time and effort in negotiations, so that they could move their marquee player for a fistful of realtively semi- and un-proven pitching talent. Sure, various scouting organizations have rated those guys higher in some cases then others, blah, blah, blah…but it wouldn’t have even been a good deal in my opinion had it gone through anyway.

Do I think the Padres maliciously made Peavy look bad? No…I don’t think they have it in them to do that, but their fumbling of the situation casts an overall poor reflection of their negotiation style and sensitivity for both their players and their fans. You bet it’s a business, but there are right and wrong ways to handle things. KT, especially, has been known before to go into extended “radio silence” during/after negotiating, trading or dumping one of his “good buddy” players, and I’m not just talking about Hoffy. Again, he has a right to handle his player relationships however he wants, but the reputation does get around…and it’s not favorable from that standpoint for what it’s worth (maybe not much to some).

Even though the Pads are 10 games out, and they are only lingering around 2nd place in late May…if I understand the general sentiment here: the towel has already been thrown in despite the surge, so let’s already start building for next year and toss this season in to the pile once and for all?
Sounds like Money Ball really has taken complete hold of the Padre organizational philosophy.

For the record, I actually think moving Peavy could be productive provided the payback is equitable. What the Padres have shown us is that they are willing to move Peavy almost no matter what, purely for budget purposes, so it does beg the question how many more games this team would have to win for management to actually consider going back to “Plan A”; trying to compete despite the $40 million payroll hurdle.

by MarshmeloMartinez on May 22, 2009 2:53 PM PDT up reply actions

I agree

But I’m pretty sure “callow” is the least apt description of Hoffman available. Well, except for “hard-throwing.”

Hmm

Guess I didn’t see the Peavy move as “throwing in the towel”, but rather as an aggressive move to better the roster of this club, sooner rather than later. I love Peavy; and in an ideal world I’d like to see him stay. However, if trading him could net the Padres a couple of decent starting pitcher, a viable shortstop, and catcher (such as what as being floated yesterday), I’m all for it.

The reality is that, the Padres don’t really have the luxury of tweaking this team. For the most part, it needs some fairly wholesale changes. So why is the front office being critiqued for making this move now? Should the FO have waited til the All-Star break when we were clearly out of the running to make a move? I liked the idea of this trade happening now. As for why entertain a trade with the White Sox when you know Peavy won’t go, you do it because you don’t know for sure that he won’t go. Is there a high probability that he might not go? Yes. But it isn’t set in stone until he says that he won’t. I give kudos to the FO for even trying to make something happen. This time last year, KT was swearing that he wouldn’t watch the Padres play this poorly, and that major changes were coming. Nothing happened until it was too late.

The FO has historically done a lot of dumb things. I don’t think this is one of them. Peavy is a guy, who at the end of the day contributes 1 out of every 5 games. If the Padres had the opportunity to get some solid position players who could contribute daily for the team, they’d be stupid not to try.

i think i'll echo the comments in here when i say

that Hoffman may be right, but he has no business commenting on his former team. i dont care how bitter he is about leaving SD, when it comes down to it business is business.

in all fairness

it’s not like Trevor Hoffman went around screaming this to the world, it was asked of him and he answered with his honest opinion, right or wrong, bitter or not. It is these guys jobs to answer questions and he chose to answer it this way because its what he thought was happening. And who knows if that is what he would say if he were still with the Padres. I don’t think we can fault the guy because someone asked him for his imput and he gave it.

he just answered a question. So did Linebrink… its what they do. Former teamates and other players weigh in on these things all the time. Wheter or not you agree with the answer is up to you, all I said was simply he gave an answer to a question, he’s not exactly out looking for trouble.

Sorry if that came across dickish

not looking for trouble either. Just trying to create some friendly banter. I agree Hoffy has every right to answer the question, and to some degree, give him props for speaking his mind. However, I do not have to like what he says, and even though Corey Brock didn’t ask me a question, I will shout to the world that it was a lame quote.

it didn't seem dickish at all

and sorry if my response came across with unimplied attitude.
I like that everyone has a different opinon on the same thing, and although sometimes it gets crazy tense in here, i think we all know its great.
and no you shouldn’t have to agree with or like what he says, which i stated, i was just offering it up that whatever he was saying wasn’t all that unusual a thing… because like what he says or not, they are always gonna be asking for his opinion on things.

but it’s all good, really, because we’re all Padre fans, difference of opinon or not, deep down we all share the same pride and pain.

while i agree with you on this to an extent

he is a professional ath-a-lete who has been in front of a microphone countless times. take it from someone who works in the political realm, you know EXACTLY what the ramifications of your comments are when you are in that position. he knew how it would be spun and how it would look on the internets. i feel it was a calculated move to make our FO look bad because he’s hurt.

im not making a judgement on whether or not that was the right thing to do, i’m just saying he knew what he was doing.

i agree he knew what he was saying

like i said, right or wrong, bitter or not, he was asked for his opinion and he gave it.

basically all I was trying to say is, and sorry if it didn’t come across fully, that no matter what his answers intentions were, he was asked to answer it and that’s all he did.

And people like the answer or don’t like it… but I personally would have been angry if he was asked and didn’t give a response.

It’s cool that people like his answer, its cool that people hate it. But I was trying to give some perspective into the fact that while it may not be his business, reporters are always going to make it his business, and that really isn’t his fault that he is asked about it.
His answers to any questions are 100% his and he has to own up to them but he doesn’t have to own up to the question.

Not his business.

He’s got an axe to grind.

Pads have every right to shop Peavy. Peavy has every right to reject a trade. It was resolved very quickly. It’s not extremely complicated.

Same old story with the Pads

The Padres front office is supposed to represent a team playing in the fifth or sixth largest city in the country. Trying to dump salary and field a winning team with a $40 million dollar payroll ain’t gonna work. Then they want to trade a proven winner, a Cy Young pitcher who the fans love to watch, for some unproven prospects? The Padres various ownership groups (I have been a dedicated fan since ‘76) have never understood Business 101: supply a good team, people will demand to see them. Create a brand, market the brand, inspire loyalty. This Peavy debacle is yet another example of people who just don’t seem to be so good at business. It’s sad.

by I_Can_Still_Pitch on May 22, 2009 2:12 PM PDT reply actions

Padres don't have to

Peavy’s doing it fine enough.

Peavy wants what Peavy wants and he won’t be happy until he gets moved to the Cubs, even if they don’t have jack **** we want or need.

And you know what, you get lots of top notch unproven prospects for big name players. See: Mark Texerira (from Texas), CC Sabathia, Manny Ramirez, Any of the big pitchers from Oakland, Matt Holliday, etc. They were all traded for PROSPECTS who have big upside and are not proven. That’s the way this always works. No one’s going to trade a glut of proven big time major leaguers.

This is just what small markets do especially when they’re stuck in a financial rutt. The point is to take that one major leaguer who costs a fortune and trade him out for four-five guys who are younger, cheaper and will provide something big in the future.

So...

Cool little story for you guys. As I’m putting Riley into her car seat in our car at the Whole Foods here in Richmond, a couple walks by us and they kind of do a double-take as they pass behind my car. The woman stops and points at the Padres sticker I have on my back window and tells me her son pitches for the Padres Double-A team in San Antonio. So, I met the parents of Stephen Faris and talked some Padre baseball. Nice folks.

Stephen is starting for the Missions tonight in Frisco…
