Peavy REJECTS trade to the White Sox!

SunTimes: Jake Peavy Rejects Trade

A source close to the Jake Peavy camp said today that the ace pitcher has notified the San Diego Padres that he will not accept the trade to the South Side, killing the deal that would have sent four players West and put Peavy in black and white.

There is no indication of the Padres have notified the Sox yet, but the Padres have been informed.

Hat Tip: Chris De Luca

And just like that it's all over.  All the excitement from today is gone.  It was fun while it lasted.  I guess it's for the best.  I'd never heard of any of those White Sox players anyway and I don't think any of them ever won a Cy Young Award.  Peavy is just starting to pitch well again so hopefully we can continue our winning streak.

Go Padres!

remember

the names of who we could have had. they will probably be awesome soon.

by schwing and a miss on May 21, 2009 4:03 PM PDT reply actions

This was probably the best deal we could have gotten.

Whatever one we do get will eventually be worse.

The closer we get to the deadline, what leverage the Padres have will get less and less. What little leverage was left, since everyone knows Jake is only going accept a trade to a handful of teams.

We’ll be lucky to get anything for him.

Jake wants what Jake wants

Jake wants to go only to a few teams
those few teams do NOT have the ammo to make this trade
Jake doesn’t care

It will come to a head sooner rather then later when Peavy takes up too much of our salary but whatever, everyone can be thrilled.
We lost 99 games with him, but yeah people here will be ‘happy’ one day out of five

by TheAxManCometh on May 21, 2009 4:04 PM PDT reply actions

They won't even be happy then.

Because last time I checked, Jake has a sub-.500 record, and I bet our actual W/L record on days he pitches is even worse.

by Zach (maestro876) on May 21, 2009 4:05 PM PDT up reply actions

MARK THIS THREAD

Nice and simple
WE will still have to trade Peavy, there’s no way around it unless we get a big increase in payroll
We will still trade him eventually, and we will get FAR LESS, all to make peavy happy.

I guarantee it will happen, and then you’ll all be screaming at KT for getting a crappy deal.

Payroll flexibility

We’ve got that now

Weak Axion

Epically weak

When Peavy is skipping like a school girl because he harassed his way to the team he wanted, and we end up with jack squat in exchange, I don’t want to hear a single word of complaint from you.

And that goes for EVERYONE who is ‘happy’ that Peavy is here.

by TheAxManCometh on May 21, 2009 4:46 PM PDT up reply actions

maybe, just maybe...

peavy actually said what he meant in that he doesn’t want to leave SD right now for family reasons….and it’s not some sort of mastermind plan to F over the entire organization and fanbase.

by cho_kettie on May 21, 2009 4:51 PM PDT up reply actions

It's really simple math

We can’t afford to pay Peavy
Peavy won’t go anywhere but four teams (Cubs, Brewers, Dodgers, Astros)
Those four teams have us over a barrel because we HAVE to get rid of Peavy
We will have a time bomb scenario in july
And we will get screwed

by TheAxManCometh on May 21, 2009 4:57 PM PDT up reply actions

Precisely.

But I won’t kill Jake for exercising his contractual right to nix a trade, either. The Pads were the ones stupid enough to offer the clause in the first place; if we’re going to blame anyone, let’s blame management for getting all batty-eyed over a pitcher and ignoring the roster rot everywhere else.

by Diesel_Suave on May 21, 2009 4:59 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, and if the FO let Peavy go without signing him to the extension everyone would be calling them cheap.

by 'Eaters on May 21, 2009 5:29 PM PDT up reply actions

False assumptions

The old owner couldn’t afford to keep Peavy. The new ones can.

Peavy would also go to the Red Sox and the Astros will be blown up and turned over soon enough. They’re old and payroll heavy.

Why would there be a timebomb scenario in July? The money for this year’s payroll has already been budgeted. Next year looks even better with the albatross sum of Giles’ contract coming off the books.

You forget that Jake already had his chance to move on for more money, and he chose San Diego, and to move his family here. For someone who reads too much into quotes, I’d think you’d put a little more stock into when he actually says something about moving his family here and wanting to keep them here.

Yeah, I don't know why

people think he’s BSing when he says things like this because he speaks his mind openly on everything else. If he really wanted out he’s the kind of guy who’d pull some Manny stunt.

Why do you think the new ones can?

Moorad bought the team on layaway basically. IF he had the money to pay Peavy’s contract why wouldn’t that be his first priority?

by Drama on May 21, 2009 7:09 PM PDT up reply actions

If they sit on their hands, and add/pay out to nobody

Giles walks, we get some draft picks (i think?), and that frees up enough revenue to pay for Peavy at least through next year and keep the same payroll level.

Bottom line: Jake puts asses in seats. That’s what the Padres need most right now.

THANK YOU

at least someone agrees with this…trading Jake now would pretty much be throwing in the towel on the next few years.

this team can win and they’ve proven it in stretches…just gotta get our chops on the road.

by cho_kettie on May 21, 2009 4:49 PM PDT up reply actions

I don't know about you

But I’m actually a Padres fan. I would like to see them win something in the next couple of years. Every missed opportunity to trade Peavy reduces the chances of that happening.

by Diesel_Suave on May 21, 2009 4:53 PM PDT up reply actions

You know what?

I’m sorry about the snark. We’re all Padres fan, and that’s horses**t of me to say. But, seriously, we need to get some good young players if we’re going to win a division in the next few seasons. This team is so far away from contention they might as well play in the PCL.

Its like a dying unicorn.

You gotta shoot it in the head to lessen the suffering.

A Peavy trade will happen, but as its already been said, as each day passes the pads lose leverage. Sooner the Peavy trade the better,

Shoot the baby unicorn in the head, dont let him suffer anymore.

how about giles?

Can we put a little more onus on Giles for playing like crap this season? Giles makes up about 20% of the payroll, Peavy’s at about 25%. Getting rid of either one of their salaries would put us below $40mil. Granted, an aging Giles wouldn’t bring much in return, but then again…we would be getting rid of an aging Giles. If we’re talking about building for the future, let’s build around our young, once in a generation, franchise pitcher. But since Giles is pulling a David Ortiz, none of this matters because he is completely and utterly untradeable. If Giles is remotely RESPECTABLE, we trade him, go under the $40mill mark, make the owner happy, and keep Peavy.

Imagine a year where we consider dumping LT, give Trevor the boot, and trade Peavy…kinda embarrassing.
