Open Thread, 5/10: Padres vs a Bunch of Hooligans Who Don't Appreciate Their Mothers

San Diego Padres at Houston Astros, May 10, 2009 11:05 AM PDT

Koala and mom via latimesblogs.latimes.com

APPY MOTHER'S DAY!!!

I know we have plenty of Gaslamp Ball mothers so hopefully your children are spoiling you with something that will bring you joy and reward for all of the hard work you've done.

If that's the case, I imagine you'll be staying very far away from this Open Thread and the Padres game today.

Tomorrow then... When you return to the often thankless task of being a mother on days other than Mother's Day, you will find this Open Thread and you will see our warm wishes and you will see the comments that your husbands and children have left in your regard and you will wonder why they were leaving comments on some stupid Open Thread as opposed to taking you out to breakfast or lunch or dinner or cleaning the toilet or something.

In terms of the game... I heard the Houston Astros all, from man to man except for Geoff Blum, don't think very highly of their mothers and baby mamas. On the other hand, the Padres ("fathers" in Spanish), are here solely to defend the honor of Madres ("mothers" in Spanish).

THIS IS OUR FIGHT TO WIN!!!

GO PADRES!!!

3. a term of address for a mother superior.

Especially to mine, a wonderful and loving woman. She’s the best.

BTW

In the photo that is topping the last OT thread, it looks like Correia is about ready to launch his pre-game buffet. Sad.

Bud-bot

finally sat Giles. Nothing but Gey, Hair, and Head in the outfield today.

Poor fathers day

My 7 months old baby greeted me with Bronchitis, so I’m staying with her at home for at least a couple of days. But now she’s going to sleep (night time in Israel) and I’m ready to follow our glorious victory or more likely usual loss

I looked

at all 30 guys who were batting lead-off yesterday. Giles had the worst batting average and second worst OBP. I guess Buddy finally got the memo.

three runs might as well be thirty

for this offense … thats a whole week’s worth of runs just in the first inning

by Lancers46 on May 10, 2009 11:25 AM PDT up reply actions

no kidding

Geer’s been solid. Dont know whats up today.
Im not watching the game right now.
If I turn it on I will never get outta here.

Miguel Tejada is whats up

I wasnt watching

Did Geer give him a cookie?

It was a changeup about thigh-high

the only thing it changed was area codes as it flew outta here

No idea

Gameday had him batting 3rd 20 minutes before gametime … I dunno who changed the lineup

by Lancers46 on May 10, 2009 11:31 AM PDT up reply actions

this was corey brocks lineup at 9am

Gerut 9, Eckstein 4, Hairston 8, AGone 3, Headley 7, Kouz 5, Hundley 2, Burke 6, Geer 1.

by eastbaysd on May 10, 2009 11:33 AM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, but then a hour before he posted this

Small change in the lineup: AGone is now hitting third, followed by Headley and then Hairston. It originally was Hairston, AGone, Headley.

by kdukat on May 10, 2009 11:34 AM PDT up reply actions

Nice AB for Headley

10th pitch and he whacks a single.

by eastbaysd on May 10, 2009 11:30 AM PDT reply actions

I know that

but I don’t think he’s an improvement over the current players

by itay n. on May 10, 2009 11:40 AM PDT reply actions

I think he's better than Correia normally. Last year he had some gems, on July 4th he had a no

hitter against the Dbacks in the 7th. I think he is better than Correia, although Correia did pitche well yesterday.

by kdukat on May 10, 2009 11:41 AM PDT up reply actions

And Geer looks terrible today, so I was hoping to see what CSB could bring since we didn't have

a lot of experience with him last year. Hopefully Hill gets better soon. I was not a fan of Silva’s from the little I saw.

by kdukat on May 10, 2009 11:47 AM PDT up reply actions

Had a bad game clearly

He’s been fairly solid outside of today

by TheAxManCometh on May 10, 2009 1:01 PM PDT up reply actions

A potted plant

is an improvement over the current players

by Lancers46 on May 10, 2009 11:55 AM PDT up reply actions

Miguel Tejada 4 RBI in two innings

Padres: 4 runs in 20 innings this series. Sigh.

by Lancers46 on May 10, 2009 11:53 AM PDT reply actions

I think I won't watch

If we lose today, we’re playing .200 ball for the last twenty games.

Kind of remids me of this.

by The Kipper on May 10, 2009 12:07 PM PDT up reply actions

If we can at least score Hairston

we’re not out of this.

Oh crap. Kouz is up.

by Mr. Meadows on May 10, 2009 12:12 PM PDT reply actions

The reason this team is so frustrating

is because they never put both phases of the game together at once.

Either the pitching is on and the hitting is off, or the hitting is on and the pitching is off.

by Zach (maestro876) on May 10, 2009 1:17 PM PDT reply actions

Ugh, an ugly fourth inning of bad pitching and defense... if you erased that

we would be tied right now. We hit three home runs! We are in slam range, though as Mud would say.

by kdukat on May 10, 2009 1:23 PM PDT reply actions

What happened?

Started watching the game in the bottom of the fifth

by sixpakfrombelgium on May 10, 2009 1:28 PM PDT up reply actions

Geer pitched pretty bad and there are four unearned runs because of two errors by Burke

But the fourth was pretty bad. It was 5-2 and became 9 to 2, but we have been trying to claw our way back.

by kdukat on May 10, 2009 1:30 PM PDT up reply actions

It sure as hell

feels that way. Looks like it’s nigh to impossible for the Padres to get some breaks.

by sixpakfrombelgium on May 10, 2009 1:32 PM PDT up reply actions

Was that a payback for Adrian getting on because matsui made an error on the previous AB?

It does suck. I have to feel like eventually we will get some breaks. Hopefully it’s not too late by then.

by kdukat on May 10, 2009 1:37 PM PDT up reply actions

Hopefully not, I thought we just played well the first two weeks, having good hitting and pitching

together at the same time and didn’t have to get the breaks, but it could be. Now we just keep getting more injuries. Hopefully Eck is okay after getting plunked.

by kdukat on May 10, 2009 1:44 PM PDT up reply actions

Timely hitting

really was the difference. Our pitching wasn’t that great, but somehow we were scoring 6-7 runs a game so it didnt matter.

Happy Mother's Day

Hope you like it with awful baseball on the side.

Arturo Lopez

should probably be placed back in the dumpster.

by Mr. Meadows on May 10, 2009 1:51 PM PDT reply actions

This Lopez kid isn't going to be around very long

I think we do need a lefty in the pen, but it clearly is not him

by kdukat on May 10, 2009 1:51 PM PDT reply actions

Well, he's never been my favorite, he always seems to do well in AAA

but it doesn’t translate to when he comes up, but maybe he is better now and can no longer be the
run fairy

by kdukat on May 10, 2009 1:54 PM PDT up reply actions

Think maybe there might be some Beavers on a plane to Chicago tomorrow

and probably passing the plane from Houston taking some of these guys back to Portland

I hope your mother is proud.

Feel sorry for the kid

but professional baseball just isn’t his working out for him. Maybe he should go for a degree at DeVry.

by Mr. Meadows on May 10, 2009 1:57 PM PDT up reply actions

He shouldn't be playing at this level yet

But we dont have much choice. Our bullpen was put together with scotch tape pre season.

by soulSD on May 10, 2009 1:58 PM PDT up reply actions

That was after

the other scotch tape bullpen fell apart, too. :(
