Baseball payrolls drop by $47 million
The $47 million is a total across baseball. The Padres' opening day payroll was cut by $30.9 million from a year ago.
sigh...

I take issue with the $30m figure
Are we counting not re-signing Greg Maddux as cutting? Because I don’t.

I think they just added up last year’s salaries and this year’s salaries. This year its around $40M and last year it was around $70M

I’m glad that we didn’t do that again.

did we get any kind of fruit basket from the Cubs for paying Edmonds to play for them?

Nope
Just the $6m one we sent to Chicago. Our only revenge was the fact that he was cut from a team that lost 99 games, we thought Paul McAnulty was more athletic, etc.

I think that was part of the reason for doing it (aside from the obvious ownership issues)
If an extra $30 million doesn’t get you much better or more entertaining then why spend it?

That was something I remember Moores saying.
Also this team does look pretty different to me. It looks better.
