Kevin Towers pleased so far with the Padres
- Padres are pretty pleased with the results so far. They knew they were going to have a tough schedule to start the season. KT is pleased but disappointed that they couldn't at least get the split in San Francisco with Peavy and Young pitching.
- Bengie Molina has been a thorn in the Padres side the last couple of years. Moreno actually threw the ball well but Molina went down and got the change up away.
- There is a lot of inexperience in the bullpen. Moreno threw the ball a lot better than he did in Philly.
- Gregerson threw the ball really well two inning prior to the loss. If we could have gotten the runner on third base home with less than two outs then Bell would have come in and we wouldn't have needed Moreno.
- Giles is pressing a bit. Opposing pitchers are pitching him high. When Giles is going good, he takes those pitches. Giles has only scored one run, which is amazing with Adrian hitting behind him. KT has a lot of confidence that Giles will come around. If Giles was swinging the bat well the Pads might have a couple more wins. KT will leave it up to Buddy Black if he wants to change Giles in the order. The worst thing you can do is sit Giles.
- Cliff Floyd still has a little bit of swelling in the knee. There is no pain in the shoulder. On Friday they may send him to Elsinore for a few rehab games and be reactivated.
- Baek will throw a simulated game this weekend or next week.
- KT is hoping that Chad Guadin will be a solid middle of the rotation starter. They are trying to get his pitch count up. He's got an out clause on May 13th where they have to call him to the big leagues as a starter or give him his release so he should be up in the next 2 or 3 weeks.

For a second there I thought it read “Kevin Towers Pissed so Far with Padres” which got me at odds as I think that the team is doing really well. Then I read what it actually said and I felt like an idiot. But yeah, Towers should be pleased with how these guys are playing, and I hope that they can move past today’s loss and sweep the Pirates outta San Diego.

Tough Schedule
I think the schedule is tough not just because of the teams, but the travel involved. If we come out of April still healthy and playing good baseball, I will be happy.
by osbug on Apr 23, 2009 7:05 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Padres always get the hell schedule re travel
Seattle for three, double header in NY, overnight to Chicago for a day game, down to Houston without a day off and then home for one series before hitting the road again? Must be the Padres schedule! I think the league figures that no one cares if the Padres are exhausted, and the Padres aren’t a large enough market to get any attention if they made a stink about it….
Viva la hysteria!

They generally do get a crappy schedule
I would understand more if they still played at the Murph, when they have to schedule around other events. But they have their own ballpark, as do most teams.
by osbug on Apr 23, 2009 8:49 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Every team has bad travel parts in their schedule
The three divisions with odd numbers of teams creates quirks that every team has to deal with.
Even the Dodgers, Yankees, Cubs, Red Sox have bizarre road trips etc. Meanwhile last April, the Padres stayed in the NL West for almost the entire month.
The idea that we are being picked on by the MLB Front Office is ludicrous. No wonder nobody takes us seriously.
by strummer on Apr 23, 2009 9:10 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Gotta agree with this statement
I really doubt the league office purposefully schedules the Padres poorly. Playing on the west coast means more east coast travel, but that’s just part of geographic reality. To think they’re purposefully, I repeat PURPOSEFULLY messed with is silly.
by 'Eaters on Apr 23, 2009 9:13 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
semi-agree
I think the Mariners and Padres get the toughest travel schedule because of where they are located compare to other teams. Padres/Mariners usually always have the most cross country flight of any other team and that has been consistent for almost 10 years.
Last week on MLB Home Plate on XM they had the lady who is in charge of scheduling and she briefly talked about the Mariners and Padres needing to travel because of their location. This year the Padres got a little screwed since they had to play the Mets on Monday and the Mets requested the first game to be play on Monday versus Tuesday because they wanted the RainDay protection for there opener. So the Padres schedule off day got flipped.

Relax
Nobody is honestly saying that MLB is intentionally picking on us…they don’t even make the schedule, although as I understand it they have to approve it. The reality is, like Ron points out below, is that the nature of our location makes it tougher to schedule. And if it comes down to giving the Mets or the Padres the weirder schedule…who do you think is going to get it?
by osbug on Apr 23, 2009 9:36 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
your last sentence is implying that
the Padres are getting picked on.
So yes, both you and Demoira think it is intentional.
Take a look at the 2008 Yankees April schedule. They went from home to KC; then to Boston; then south to TB; then home for 2 games; then back on the road to Balt, Chicago, and Cleveland.
Meanwhile the 2008 Padres spent almost all of April within the NL West.
http://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/NYY/2008-schedule-scores.shtml
There are plenty of other examples as well.
by strummer on Apr 23, 2009 9:42 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Right
You are comparing the Yankees worst travel stretch to the Padres best. And even in that stretch they generally travelled within two time zones.
At some point, they have to decide on a schedule. Is that schedule going to be totally fair? No, so somebody is going to get the worse schedule correct? I am not saying that I think MLB is intentionally giving them a bad schedule because everyone gets bad stretches. I do think that due to their location (both geographically and as a market) they will get worse schedules compared to other markets. MLB is a business, and it is run like one, which is probably a good thing overall.
I could be totally wrong, and the Padres get the “fairest” schedule in the MLB, but I have about as many statistics to back up or refute that as you do.

Which is it?

Semantics
Read the statements, they are two seperate but related statements.
1.Padres will probably get a weirder schedule than the Mets.
2.EVERYBODY gets bad schedules at some point in the season, but some are worse than others.
The Mets and Padres could both get AWESOME schedules and the Padres could still have a weirder schedule than the Mets. Or they could both have terrible schedules and the Padres have the weirder schedule.

we should play 162 games at home against the nationals
anything other than that is unfair. the padres should have a fair opportunity to go 162-0, and anything other than that is bud selig trying to screw us over because our weather is nice.

Wow
My complaint about the travel is the reason nobody takes us seriously? Are -you- serious? I hope 1) that you are only referring to people not taking Padres fans seriously as opposed to the team, and 2) that you realize that if any team has a “victim” persona, Padres are not the top of the list – not even close.
Anyway, there’s always going to be an element of intentional and unintentional when it comes to scheduling parity. It isn’t necessarily one or the other. The best efforts are made to keep things balanced, but the West Coast teams inevitably have to travel more, with much more exhausting trips, generally. The fascinating thing is that LA isn’t that far from SD, but their schedule isn’t usually as viscious (which isn’t to say that it is a cakewalk).
Take, as is pointed out, the Mets’ Monday opener that left Tuesday a free day, rather than the more logical and reasonable break for the Padres prior to the Mets series. In whose interest was the Monday opener? The Mets. In whose interest would a more regular free day prior to the series have been? The Padres (the team that traveled). Of course the Mets’ interest won out over the Padres’ interest. It is a business and the Mets have the larger market and were seeking to maximize profits from opening the new stadium. Is that “fair”? No. Is it common business sense? Yes.
So, yes, most of the inequality in travel schedules is unintentional, but some of it is built in as part of the MLB business model.
Regardless, I would think it’s you that has the issues here. I was being dramatic and speaking hyperbolically. Sigh.

I don't see the hyperbole
You seem very determined to state your case that MLB is more unfair towards the Padres when it concerns scheduling. Osbug feels the same way, but continues to deny it.
It is common for Opening Days (especially with a new stadium) to have the following day off. That way there is a convenient make up day. It has nothing to do with big money vs small money, and us losing out. If KC opened a new stadium today, they would schedule tomorrow as an off day, regardless of who they were playing.

Hyperbole = exaggeration to make a point
I don’t think that MLB is biased against the Padres. I think they are naturally biased toward their more profitable large market, and generally East Coast, teams. I explained that I recognize the business nature of the MLB and that it is perfectly rational. I also explained that I believe every effort is made to achieve parity. But I also attempted to explain that when there is a choice to be made between two teams having a difficult schedule, smaller, less convenient markets like the Padres will inevitably be the one’s to suffer. There’s no crazy conspiracy, it’s just facts.
The hyperbole was my statement that someone in the MLB offices would be thinking intentionally that no one would care if the Padres (specifically) had a crappy schedule and they wouldn’t have the clout to complain. Among other things, I’m aware that it’s a husband and wife team with no real connection to the MLB offices who do the schedule.
That doesn’t, however, change the fact that some teams, year in and year out, get stuck with significantly worse travel schedules than the rest of the league. Just a simple statement of fact.
Now, if you want to talk about a conspiracy to pick on my Padres, ask me about the umps in the 2007 season. That was unfair – and topped with the completely unfair cherry that was losing to the Rockies on a crap call where home plate was absolutely not touched.
Viva la hysteria!

I believe
The old couple lost the scheduling a few years back. Now it’s a group called Sports Scheduling Group. I think it was getting too complex for the couple that had been doing it for years, and the new group brought computer generated schedules to the fold. Obviously they worked in an algorithm to make sure the Padres get the worst schedule in the league.

The worst thing we can do is sit Giles???
so it is better to send him out there and lose games than replace him with somebody like Hairston who is hitting like .400. So benching Hairston is ok, but Giles can lose us games and make his $11 mill, just pretend the money is going to hairston and it will seem almost worth it.
by icaughthundleys#4 on Apr 23, 2009 8:37 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
I think he meant
The worst thing we can do to get Giles out of his funk is to bench him. I tend to agree that you need to let a vet like him work through his slump, but we need to drop him down the order. Hairston and Gerut make a great platoon, I wouldn’t mess with that if not needed.
by osbug on Apr 23, 2009 8:40 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I definitely worry
About how much their effectiveness working as a platoon would be diminished if either was playing daily. On the one hand, you have the Adrian Gonzalezes of the world, who just need a chance to be an every day player. On the other hand, you have, well, most every other bench player….
Viva la hysteria!

We thought we’d be sucking from day one so having some success is a good thing. I can’t wait til somebody gets into the pitching squad so we can get rid of Moreno.
And with Giles, maybe a day or two off would help him get his head straight, relax and let him play better
