Who Should Be The Padres Team Captain?

This has been addressed before (and that was recycled, too) but it's perpetually pertinant since nobody has really stepped up to claim the role since T decided to give his knees a rest. It's especially valid now that previous favorites like Trevor, Cameron, Bard and Dave Roberts have moved on and yet another was found to be fond of flogging and flinging the fairer sex.

Heat "The Cartographer" Bell's stock has risen recently; he was apparently led to believe that the closer job entailed being the team spokesman as well and hasn't disappointed in either role. He speaks as a confident leader, whereas Gerut's comments are the musings of a neurotic dissident- equal parts Bouton and Khalil with a twist of Che Guevara. Adrian's the star but he doesn't strike me as much of a take charge guy; I suppose he could be one of the "lead by example" types. If this were three years from now, Nick Hundley might very well be top candidate...

What says you?

The Cartographer

holds the road map to victory

DODGERS, RED SOX, YANKEES, BRONCOS, PATRIOTS and RAIDERS all suck. Especially the Dodgers.

Oh, that's beautiful.

They are talking about him on ESPN right now…

His tactic worked and only took him two days. Genius! (like Axion)

I still have to go with Jake

When the team is down, in a losing streak, knowing he’s going to start again always makes you feel better.

No knock on any of the personalities we have in the clubhouse, this is a fun bunch.

It's Jake til he's traded. (hopefully the W's pile up and he's not)

In which case it’s Adrian. I’ve been noticing he’s been good about talking to pitchers mid-inning to settle them down. He needs to do more of that.

Although gaslampballer goose and I were VERY displeased to see Omar Minaya talking to Adrian during BP tonight. Just laughin’, shootin’ the breeze…..This will all be covered in our fanpost, but it was very unsettling. (for those that don’t know, Omar is widely caricatured as coveting Latin players…and it may not be caricature)

If Adrian leaves, then it’s Heath I guess. But I don’t see how a guy who sits in the bullpen all game can be captain.

by Dalton on Apr 16, 2009 10:16 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I guess I view starters how you view the closer.

I don’t see how Jake or any other SP could captain a team given that they take at least 80% of all games off and only stay in the game for (optimistically) two-thirds of each of the ones they’re in..

Someone else.

My only problem with Jake is that he isn’t on the field leading by example everyday. He is great when he is in the game, but I’d prefer someone who was always on the field. Jody would be a great guy since he is older, but he almost seems like he couldn’t be bothered. It would be nice to see one of the younger guys like Headley step up and be a leader.

I also like his comments about Estes

being a AAA pitcher when Estes talked about the team.

Here’s a darkhorse for team captain – Jody Gerut. If he sticks around long enough I think his work ethic and hard nose play will continue to rub off on the team -much like ECK. It’s good to see the younger/newer guys NOT taking on the casual game of habits of the older guys from the last two years. It is fun to watch this new found fire that we are seeing. Two come from behind wins already this year -probably didn’t see two all of last year.

No Captain!

Nobody on this team deserves to be captain. A captain is a leader and a spokesman, not only for the team, but for the fans that root for his team. I like a lot of guys on this team, but at this point, I don’t think any of them represent the Padres in the best way possible. Maaaaaaybe Adrian gets close.

by Dex on Apr 17, 2009 10:04 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I agree

I couldn’t bring myself to vote, not even for ‘Somebody Else’.

by The Kipper on Apr 17, 2009 10:42 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don't think "Captain" is the right word

Team Captains in other sports, like hockey, actually have an additional role besides being a role model or whatever. I voted in this poll not for the Captain but for the guy that I think could be the face of the Padres and is the best example of what I want all our players to be like. Then again, having quiet guys like Adrian is good, too. To balance things out a little.

DODGERS, RED SOX, YANKEES, BRONCOS, PATRIOTS and RAIDERS all suck. Especially the Dodgers.

by LJbumfool on Apr 17, 2009 12:15 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I pretty much agree.

I think a HUGE part of our ‘09 success to date is how they are, as The Cartographer pointed out, a team in every sense of the word. Now, I really, really hate hippie jam music but I think it’s great that the whole team went to see “The David Matthews Band” together. These guys all have some kind of chip on each of their shoulders and cyclically feed off of each other. I personally think that’s way better than having just one take charge guy.

Gonzalez was the third most valuable position player on the Padres in ’08 behind Giles and Gerut.

His reasoning was that Adrian was our best player. I’m just pointing out that Giles and Gerut were better last year.

Everybody is stepping up.
Want a turning point? To a man in the clubhouse, they point at the hard, but fair, slide in the fifth that Nick Hundley put on shortstop Jimmy Rollins to break up a potential double play.

“In my opinion, the pivotal moment of the game was when Nick slides hard into second to break up that double play,” said Headley, who had three hits Friday and has seven in the past two games.

“That lit a fire within everybody.”

team captain

Mark Grant….voice of the franchise

It's NOT Adrian

And lemme tell you why….

Went to Spring Training again this year, as per usual. The Kid went to get autographs pre game, as per usual. All Padres cool, as per usual. EXCEPT ADRIAN, as per usual. Little kids ask him to sign and he – I’m not exaggerating – throws his head back, sighs, rolls his eyes and lets it be known that he’s doing these 5-year-olds a huge favor by busting out the Sharpie on the baseballs. My son was like forget that and moved on to someone else less dickish. Adrian didn’t even play in that game so I don’t know why it was such a damn inconvenience but my new gloss for him is A-Hole. Sure, he’s a good player but his PR skills are stank. Every other player, coach , manager Bud Black and GM Kevin Towers were awesome but Adrian was just too wrapped up in himself to be bothered. Edgar, who was also signing autographs that day, got all of the personality in that family.

When my boyfriend Jody Gerut came out of that game, he looked for a kid in the stands with a Padres jersey on (it was an away game) and gave him an autographed bat. Take notes A-Hole. It’s not that hard.

well just to offer up another side

I don’t know what was with him when you saw him, nor do I think that is good behavior for any athlete or celebrity to behave like that to kids… but when I went to Spring Training last year Adrian signed for a long time at 2 games, but would only sign for kids, no adults, also last year when my friend and I decided to be stalkers after a game, he walked out on the street to head over to a resturaunt and signed for only kids once again… And at other functions I’ve seen him go out of his way to be polite to kids… So I’m just offering up another side saying it does happen where he can be a great guy towards kids and even adults… but that doesn’t excuse any negative behavior I’m just saying he is not always like that… maybe its just a weird occurance…

and as an extra comment… I saw him get really really frustrated by adults trying to get autographs when there are kids there so maybe just maybe his bad attitude is directed towards the adults and he just doesn’t realize it comes off bad.

plus I don’t think he would have a charity directed towards youth if he was bothered by them.

Amen, sister!

First, keep in mind, it is Spring Training, but this is the location where these guys WORK. You don’t go to work and have all these people impacting you doing your batting practice or workouts that you have been told to do
Second, i was at ST this year and last and Adrian was the one signing the most and talking to most everyone and being gracious while most players just walked past. If he couldn’t do it right then, he said “I will after I hit, I promise” and he did. They have schedules at ST they have to keep.
I agree with C8LIN, he probably just was passing on his frustrations towards the OBNOXIOUS adults (particularly men) with their stupid book of collector’s items that stalk and harass every player for autographs. I saw some of them make some of the minor league guys sign like 40 cards at once!
Lastly, everyone has a bad day or a bad moment and you might have caught one. It’s not an excuse, of course, but I know sometimes I have been annoyed at what went on in a day and may have passed them onto someone that didn’t deserve it, just a victim of my mood.
I was at Adrians Bowling Bash and other events and he could not have been more gracious and nice and respectful towards EVERYONE. He is by far one of the most genuine people I have ever seen interact, but he is also one of the most popular players on the team and therefore, people demand more of his time, more than he has to give sometimes. At the end of the day, baseball is their JOB and they have a boss to report to like everyone else and schedules that are kept, particularly at ST. I don’t think one instance, which is completely un-Adrian like, should make him an enemy in your book. Because if I took every interaction as the end all by all from a player, your precious Gerut would not be high in my book. Don’t get me wrong, I think he’s great, but if I took the one negative time I saw him with someone as fact as he is all the time, then I could be on here ranting about him, but I would never take one instance as the only way a person is all the time.

by kdukat on Apr 24, 2009 3:50 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Semi-related

I have heard that some players have tried to avoid signing at times because they’ll sign things for 500 people, and the 501st who doesn’t get his sig hates the player for it.
