"Ten years ago you'd be lucky to find one Latino on our 40-man (roster)," Towers said. "Now almost a third of our club at the major league level – and maybe half our roster – consists of international players."
So how did this happen?
Smiling wryly at the question, Adrian Gonzalez said, "A lot of Hispanics went on the waiver wire."

Ademas, son muy orgullosos, los latinos
Mejor tener ellos, con poca experiencia en nuestro equipo, que otros con mucha experiencia y nada de pasion.
Weird choice of words...
And it just seems untrue… maybe now that redneck row has been dispersed, the contrast is highlighted.
Here’s our 1999 roster candidates:
Wiki Gonzalez
Quilvio Veras
Carlos Almanzar
Domingo Guzman
Carlos Reyes
Ruben Rivera
Roberto Rivera
Carlos Baerga
Carlos Garcia
George Arias

Uncommon Sportsman :: Absurdity in play
A couple of years ago, maybe. But not ten.
Maybe the last couple of years have just felt like 10 to Towers.
Or maybe he's thinking farther back but only uses numbers that he can count on his fingers
In 1995 there was a total of 4. Melvin Nieves, Andujar Cedeno, Andres Beruman and Fernando Valenzuela.
In 1996 there was a total of 6. Cedeno, Beruman, Valenzuela, Luis Lopez, Al Osuna and Dario Veras.
The “lucky to find one” would still be an exaggeration, but given that not all these players were necessarily on the roster at the same time, he’s probably only off by a little.
And if you want to read between the lines and try to figure out how many Latino players were major contributors post-Alomars to pre-Adrian, it’s probably a really small number compared to other teams. Just looking at our list of opening day starters you’ve got: Tony Fernandez, Ricky Gutierrez, Cedeno, Veras, Arias, Deivi Cruz, Vazquez, Carlos and Ramon Hernandez, and Ruben Rivera from 1991 to 2005. Then you throw in Valenzuela and Ismael Valdez, Almanzar and Reyes, and Nieves as a some bench power to get your basic list of contributing Latinos. And I don’t even think more than 1 or 2 of them are Dominican.
Memo to baseball managers: You manufacture runs by NOT making outs, not by making them on purpose.
Those were all white guys from the midwest.
They all knew that Hispanics were the next big thing in the major leagues, and their dreams of baseball glory happened to coincide with the showing of the movies “Soul Man” and “Born in East LA” on the movie of the week. They all took self-tanning pills and hired Cheech Marin as an accent coach.
Bud Selig got suspicious, though, when reports of these players ordering ham on white bread with mayo began to spread. Steroid testing actually was an unplanned benefit of testing for self-tanning pills.
"2009 Padres.....Yeah, we're still here.
