An Information Request
To all members of Gaslamp Ball, but especially those who have been to a game or two at Petco Park, I need some advice. I've never been much of a professional baseball fan, growing up in Oregon made rooting for a team tough. I'm attending the University of San Diego here, and felt the urge to attend a game. I'm not opposed to baseball mind you, it just hasn't drawn me in the way basketball has.
A few friends of mine and I have decided to go to the Pirates game on Saturday the 25th, in the cheap seats with the meal deal mentioned on the front page. My question to you all is: what should I be expecting when I go to the game? Do you guys or gals have any tips on how to make the ballpark experience a truly memorable one, even to a complete non-sports fan?
The last time I went to a professional baseball game, not counting the Portland Beavers, A-Rod was still a Mariner, in the early years of Safeco. Any information you provide would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, and GO PADRES!

One suggestion
Go to the Padres store, walk through it, down the ramp and onto the field level.
It’s the fenced area at the bottom of the Western Metal Building, straight down the 3rd base line, to the left of the red TOYOTA sign in my photo.

Garlic fries.
Gordon biersch garlic fries, i think they are sold outside section 119. absolutely choice with a cold beer. also randy jones bbq behind the batter’s eye in center is good and i think they do fish tacos at various points in the stadium?
There really is not a bad seat in the house… i have been in every area of the ballpark and have never really been disappointed with the view like i have other places.
Go to the western metal building and the tony gwynn statue near the park in the park.. pretty cool.
and buy a padres cap and get in on the ground level as a fan… we are in first place in the nl west and now would be a good time to hop on the bandwagon!
We've all experienced those delirious moments where one thing leads to another and you find yourself at the end of the night messing around with sheep. It's something we all have in common. -jbox

Don’t listen to any of jbox’s forthcoming anti-garlic fries propaganda, either. Garlic fries are awesome.
No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.

If you don't
really care about the game, you should walk around the stadium at least once. The view from the standing area behind home plate (low 100s sections) is awesome if you don’t mind standing for a while. Its usually where i hang out when i buy 5$park passes.
Also, do everything JBRO and eastbay said.
You can skip the “beach” or “sandbox” out in right field though, its pretty lame.
Go out to some sports bars in the gaslamp and mingle with some fans after the game.

Meal Deal
I assume you mean the 5 for $5 Deal. If so, you can only get that at certain concession stands. They’re not hard to find or get to, but you can’t walk up to just any old stand. Just a heads up.

I heard the 5 for $5 Deal
is available ONLY at the Friar Frank stands.
I dont exactly where they are, but they are spread out all over the park. I know the stand in LF lower area is NOT a Friar Frank stand.
P.S. Just a hint from a girl, I avoid eating them and avoid talking to ANYONE thats eaten those garlic fries. If I am home, ALONE, I would eat them. Teh odor permeates. Alot.

Tips from a fellow Blazer fan
1. The $5 park pass is the way to go. It gets you in the gate and you’re free to explore from there.
2. Though there are plenty of food options at the park, you may not find anything quite as delicious or filling as the jalapeno handshakes or the ketchup soup.
3. STAY AWAY FROM THE GARLIC FRIES. While garlic can be enjoyed in the privacy of your own home, it is inconsiderate to ingest them while sitting mere inches away from a complete stranger.
4. Enjoy National League Baseball, the way baseball was meant to be played. Being form Oregon, you’ve surely seen your fair share of Mariners broadcasts… that’s American League baseball… cheaters, all of them.

re: garlic fries
thank you. someone has some sense. those things are delicious, but if one person in your section gets them it can be brutal.
they are so pungent my eyes water just thinking about them… not for public consumption.

I like batting practice
Get there early and shag some fly balls from the OF seats. After it’s done you’ll have some downtime. You can go up to the Western Metal building bar, grab some brews and maybe reserve a spot on the balcony (IIRC you can put your name on a list for sitting out there for the second half of the game or go out there for pregame/first half). Or you could walk around the stadium. Or you could get your hand and ticket stamped and head out to the gaslamp to take in some good food and some slightly less expensive booze. You can then re-enter at gametime through a special entrance (and skip the lines to get into the ballpark) and head to your seat or some of the standing room areas that others mentioned.
Note: If you’re not staying in the downtown area you can either ride the trolley in from certain locations or pay for parking. I prefer the Convention Center (West Entrance, by the Marriot, not the more commonly used North Entrance) because it’s usually only $8-10, its fairly close and you don’t have to wait behind a lot of other cars to get out or fight with cars to get onto a street once you exit.
Memo to baseball managers: You manufacture runs by NOT making outs, not by making them on purpose.

beware the freight train
this is the only drawback to convention center parking. The occasional frieght train stops by the entrance to the gas lamp, completely blocking the access from the convention center to the ballpark (or back after the game). Its very annoying, you will have no idea when it is going to move, might be 5 minutes, might be tomorrow morning. This doesn’t happen too often, but it does happen every now and then. If it happens, head north and you will eventually get around it. also, I always park in the convention center

You know what they need down there?
Pedestrian mother-effing overpass. Pardon the language but this has now become a biannual rant. It doesn’t make any sense for that parking structure in front of the Hilton that exploded to be all the way over there, so if you park, you have to walk all the way down to 4th to cross the tracks.

They could have built it when the park opened for like $1 million
And now it’s going to cost somewhere around $20 million.
These people are geniuses.
Also, I think I know which Petco entrance Ax doesn’t use, because it’s pretty obvious that they are building the pedestrian ramp there. Either that or a really big modern art sculpture.
