"I saw John Kruk on 'Baseball Tonight,' and he said, 'They're playing real well, but I don't believe in them,' " Bell said before Monday's game. "And I saw ESPN's promo for tonight's game. They mention the Mets are opening Citi Field, they mentioned the starting time, but nowhere did they mention the Padres. That gave me the (expletive)."
"I truly believe ESPN only cares about promoting the Red Sox and Yankees and Mets – and nobody else," said the closer, a former Met. "That's why I like the MLB Network, because they promote everybody. I'm really turned off by ESPN and 'Baseball Tonight.' When Jake Peavy threw 8 1/3 innings on Saturday, they showed one pitch in the third inning and that was it. It's all about the Red Sox, Yankees and Mets."
Comments
As much as I'm already on the
“I hate Heath Bell” bandwagon (because he beat us last night), the guy is pretty much right on his point about ESPN. Seems to me that ESPN has become the home of NFL football. The season is long over with and they report on it night and day as if there are games about to be played this Sunday.
ESPN does a disservice to baseball by not being more balanced in their coverage of all the teams in MLB. The MLBn does a pretty good job of covering all of MLB and their teams. The 30 teams in 30 days production bares that out. MLBn, IMO, still doesn’t have much character but it does have some people that provide great analysis and insight into the game.
One final note. No one (especially MLB) cared about the Rays until they started winning. If the Padres pull off something similar to what the Rays did last year, expect more light to be shown upon the great city that San Diego is and the very good team that the Padres could possibly become.

i don't care
about what ESPN covers or doesn’t cover. I just like that Heath doesn’t censor himself.
The Pads are not the Rays, lets just hope we can win 75 games!!

To be honest
The play-by-play was at least somewhat fair to the Padres and gave them a fair amount of credit. When it was baseball tonight/sportscenter they looked like they had gas trying to talk about the Padres. Like it was the last thing they ever wanted to discuss when they were expecting a Mets win. And when they did give credit to the Padres it was always “well its early, this is unexpected, let’s see if they can maintain it”. Yeah we know you ********!

Regarding the telecast
So, I watched ESPN for the 2nd-5th innings. They were okay, but kinda boring… not a lot of information or comments. And very little about the Padres.
Then, I went to MLB audio, but I accidentally got put on the Mets broadcast for about an inning, I wasn’t paying attention that closely to the voices… but I was like, these guys are not that great tonight… and they seem to know a lot less about the Pads tonight… Of course Adrian Gonzalez is a great fielder (after Adrian made a great play)… where the hell have they been…
Then, a few minutes later I realized I was listening to the wrong station and changed back to the Pads broadcast. I felt much better and much relieved.
I think we are fortunate to have one of the better broadcast teams in baseball. I really like the Braves broadcasting team too. And Vin Scully is really good.
Any other really good broadcast teams out there?
Damn Right, Heath!
Not afraid to take on “the Man”. I also thought Kruk was especially condescending to the Padres last night on BT. And they all had big grins on their faces when they started talking about the Padres doing well, like it was a big joke to them. [Expletive] them.
Remember
That Steve Phillips is bad at evaluating what makes a good team. Look at what he did to the mets with 2nd highest payroll…just terrible.
"Over? Did you say "over"? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!"
here are some highlights
Getting rid of Olerud and signing Mo Vaughn to play 1B
Trading Scott Kazmir for Victor Zambrono
Playing Cendno for 3 years and his OPS of 600
Kris Benson
Roberto Alomar (way after his prime and after two surgeries)

phillips
Phillips didn’t do the Kazmir trade, it was Jim Duquette.
Also, the Mets didn’t lose anyone of value in the Alomar trade unless you value Matt Lawton. Not really a horrible idea to take a flier on a Hall of Famer, and sometimes that doesn’t work out.
Cedeno was garbage, though.

he still signed Mo Vaughn

Phillips
He also traded Melvin Mora for a couple months of Mike Bordick.
Gotta give him props for trading for Hampton and Derek Bell for basically Cedeno and Dotel. He then turned the compensation picks for losing Hampton into Aaron Heilman and David Wright. Not too shabby. Of course, he signed Kevin Appier to replace him which cost him the draft pick that became Jeremy Bonderman.
And 2001 “Mets Right Fielder” was just a disaster. And 2002’s OF was just brutal, including the return of the Cedeno.
Memo to baseball managers: You manufacture runs by NOT making outs, not by making them on purpose.
ESPN is a joke.
Glad to hear players call it out. I’m sure its frustrating to have a great outing and then being overshadowed by the most recent Yankee loss. If it wasn’t for “web gems” or “thats nasty” i probably wouldn’t watch.
Heath is a gangster.
ESPN Programming questionable
I love the NFL as much as the next fan, but when ESPN broadcast NFL Tonight last night during the baseball season, heading into the NBA playoffs and during the NFL OFF-season , I was like WTF? and changed the channel.
ESPN continues to baffle.

Uncommon Sportsman :: Absurdity in play
Why, oh why...
…did the Padres get Perdomo and stick him in the bullpen and NOT use him? Protecting a Rule 5 guy?
Seems to me they are just wasting a spot. I know, I know, we are doing well, so dont rock the boat.
Darryl (Ackerfelds) shook his head when we mentioned to him that the Padres had released Hampson. I dont think he understood it either.
Pretty soon I think not having a lefty reliever is going to bite the Padres in the backside.

Jerrod Washburn, starter, lost Game 1 for the Angels
He’s a lefty.
Scott Schoeneweis, lefty reliever, also pitched in Game 1 and 3.
Chicks Dig a Low ERA Bullpen.
The whole left-handed pitcher deal
is seriously overrated. We’ve had amazing bullpen work in the past without a single lefty on hand. In fact, if I recall correctly, we had the lowest bullpen ERA in MLB without a lefty.
Capri. Denial. It's a sweet sweet place; come join me....
You San Diego people with your local broadcast make me sick
All I get is ESPN, and they do a really good job of showing Padres games. That is, if they’re playing the Mets, or possibly the Braves or Cubs. Of course, they do mostly talk about the other team, and they say things like “K-rod is the all-time saves champ”. Only for single-season you putz!. Oh, and that Erin Andrews is a little annoying, okay a lot annoying, and at points of last night’s game I thought that I was watching some fluff piece on the local news “the food of Citi Field”, but, other than that… Well, that and the fact that they pretty much only show the Padres on Sportscenter if someone on the opposing team does something mildly mentionable. I swear, the Friar would have to self-immolate to get them to cover the Padres for the Padres. Okay, you’re right. ESPN sucks! Anybody got a slingbox?
"2009 Padres.....Yeah, we're still here.
Yep
I’ve had my fill of Erin Andrews and her hair extensions. Take a good look at when she’s off camera (not interviewing players) she appears about as bored as someone watching grass grow. I think she knows she was hired for…Oh never mind. I’ve had enough of her and ESPN – The total sports football / northeast network.
