- Gerut got an earful from Mets fans after his home run that christened Bailout Ballpark. “Can't tell you what they said,” he said. “I assume you write for a PG paper.”
- Nobody thinks about bullpens when designing ballparks. “Relievers are always an afterthought,” Bell said, smiling. “Some of the grounds crew at San Francisco's ballpark told me that they pretty much forgot about building a bullpen there. That's why all you have is a bench and a patch of dirt there. I know there were issues with the bullpens at Petco (when San Diego's ballpark opened in 2004).”
- Bell remembers the Mets sending him to the Minors and recalling him every other week.
- Off day tomorrow, but Correia pitches next.
- Black is tinkering with the rotation. Black said. “I wanted to keep Peavy and Chris on regular days. They're both throwing well.”
- Ducksnorts recaps the first week of Padres baseball.
- No new info on the Giles lawsuit. Her lawyer called him a "pig".

"i kinda feel like nevin and klesko were some fling we (the padres) had in the past and now realize were a bad idea and are embarrassed about."
Cliff Floyd, did you polish your head in the Shine-O Ball-O?

I'm glad we signed Floyd to bowl.

Tinkering
How about Buddy tinkering with the rotation by not leaving his obviously gassed starter in to face David Wright with two men on, just because the pitcher’s spot is due up next inning? We’re carrying 13 pitchers, why not use them?
At this point I'm just thinking
All’s well that ends well. We’re stuck with Buddy this season for better or for worse.

I re-watched that last night
Silva was obviously gassed, every third pitch or so was wildly off. However, before the damage was done, there were two outs. The pitching coach did the mound visit to give Silva a minute or so to recover. I’m sure Buddy thought Silva could get one more out, save the extra pitching change and get credit for a possible win (if you don’t complete 5 you won’t get the win).
At the time, there were reasons to leave him in to get one more measely out in PetCo east. At the time I thought they should have pulled him as well, but I don’t think it was a clear cut bonehead move, especially when considering the other factors.
In Buddy’s favor, he did pull Jake after 8.1 when Jake clearly wanted to stay in and the obvious “former pitcher choice” would have been to leave him in. So he doesn’t always make pitching decisions that don’t work.

Plus
Wright golfed it and it barely went out. It was Silva’s last batter regardless of the homerun.

Great performance, but Silva was Done
I was screaming at my TV for Buddy to pull him, but we did win. And in that light, maybe Bud wanted to see what Silva was made of and where his limits are. Last time I looked, the Padres have signed 117 pitchers. Let’s see who steps up and earns a spot in the rotation.

Okay
You actually kinda convinced me there. Given that there really aren’t many scouting reports on Silva, and we all know how completely unreliable Spring Training is a predictor of ability, I suppose I can actually buy into the “see what he can do” concept. It’s early in the season, we’ve got a three-run lead, and Silva’s struggling. Let’s see if he can pitch himself out of it. I guess we all needed to know how much Silva can do when he’s out of gas. ‘Cause there could be a higher-pressure situation later down the road when we really need to know if he can go one more out or if he’s just done. And we now know: he’s done.

14 Padres with a positive WPA now. Eight hitters (Rodriguez, A. Gonzalez, Eckstein, Hundley, Blanco, Headley, Gerut & Cabrera) and six pitchers (Bell, Gregerson, Moreno, Sanchez, Young, de la Cruz).

hmmm
no Jake “I am in prison with this team” Peavy on that list.

Love it!
The smiley was a really sweet gesture Richard. I imagine that wouldn’t go over so well at Bloody Elbow :)
