Another brilliant first round pick by the Padres.
During his freshman year at Rancho Bernardo, Dykstra suffered a hip injury on the basketball court. Soon after, he developed avascular necrosis in his right hip – the same affliction that ended Bo Jackson's athletic career...But the hip is still a challenge, so much so that Dykstra's agent, Scott Boras, said last month that he wouldn't be surprised if Dykstra must accept a designated hitter role in a number of years.

They must've felt comfortable with the pick
It seems like they did a number of tests last year and his health was a major concern to the FO before he signed… That being said, maybe they got him to sign for less than Borass originally wanted and Moores Alderson De Podesta Towers decided to go for it

"And with the 3rd overall pick of the MLB draft, the Padres select..."

I fully expect us to select someone who has been dead for two years with this year's pick

If we are trying to something for nothing - which does not exist
then getting nothing for nothing seems like a good strategy. Dead guys don’t ask for a huge signing bonus.
