Padres go 1-2-3

Let’s go, Cha Cha.

Cha Cha

He’s deceptively fast. At the game last Thursday, he looked like he was soft tossing high 80s stuff. The radar gun disagreed and said he was throwing 93 MPH gas. I saw a Rangers pitcher later that game that looked like he was bringing the heat, with the catchers glove getting a good pop with every pitch, and his stuff was 93 MPH on the same gun. That’s why I’m saying it’s deceptive.

I dont think he is on the 40 man roster.

So I belive he must be on a minor league deal.

He is a NRI

I was wondering why he didnt play many games for the Giants last year.
Then I found it was because he got a 50-game ban for steroids:

I think it's assumed

That he’ll get the bulk of the playing time in Portland.

I think Lobaton will be the backup there. Colt Morton seems to be getting squeezed out with Canham going to San Antonio.

Alfonso and Lobaton will be a good C combo at AAA Portland, which is good since I don’t think they have one good player on that team.

With Lobaton’s defensive skills last Thursday. He had to block a few balls in the dirt and his technique was flawless.

We’ve got a Rule V guy (Nova), some veterans (Ryu) and some guys who have shown their stuff in AAA for longer (Britton, Patterson) who are more likely to get their shots because you’d have to release them if they don’t. So Burke has the option to go down and then get the call when they are convince that one or more of the other guys is disposable.

I'm guessing

Moreno, Quezada and Lopez will get their shots this year at some point. Reineke will probably get some work out there. Correia too if LeBlanc and Geer are starters. Ekstrom could make a good swing man. As much as many would hate to see it, Thatcher will play for the Padres this year, you can take that to the bank. Ham Sandwich may be done. Mike Adams should make a (hopefully) triumphant return by midseason.

They have flirted with signing Will Ohman

But that doesn’t seem to be in the cards as big money teams like the Phils and Mets are involved in those talks. Joe Beimel is out there, but I believe he has yet to come down from his multiyear contract demands. These are probably a couple of the players Towers referred to when he was talking about RP help.

Also, Hampson is not a guy that really specializes in getting lefties out to begin with. So the fact that he’s left handed really has little importance. Thatcher is better suited to be that guy, but he just can’t seem to get his sh__ together.

I actually like not having a 'lefty specialist'

then there’s no confusion about “well, we were playing for the odds and wanted to get the best matchup”
Just keep it plain and simple, put out the best reliever available no matter what hand he wears his glove on

I agree for the most part

But if you have a guy who gets lefties out better than the guy who gets both hands out equally, then the specialist can fill a role that is sometimes necessary.

Yeah

Just no lefty “for the sake of having a lefty”

The main argument for a lefty

Is that Worrell and Meredith are probably going to run into trouble if they face lefties, so they could use somebody who could get those guys out once those two have gotten the righties out.

Worrell is the reliever

I am most excited about. So far hes been consistent.
He was the Cardinals 2005 Minor League Pitcher of the Year.
His minor league career was very good, a 2-time minor league all-star.
He seems to have lots of upside. He just turned 26.
He was one of the players traded for Khalil, so he needs to deliver.

His funky delivery, is extrapolated upon well in this blog:

It’s like Meredith’s delivery on steroids.

I am not into the mechanics of this, but it doesnt look, uh, comfortable.

This

I don’t get either. People are puttin’ all their eggs in the Worrell basket. He had a few weeks with the big league team and was stellar in AAA — but he’s a got a big mouth and not enough “time” to back it up. I’m interested to see how he’ll do but I’m not bankin’ on anything with this guy. Funky delivery — that’s cool. But we’ll see how long it takes for hitters to figure him out and he starts gettin’ lit up.

My only concern with this victory...

is what my brother and I always joke about when we see the Padres do this. We joke that the Padres have used up all their runs for the week. Hopefully, they’ve broken this “trend”.
