Padres Sign Chris Snelling
This from MLB's Corey Brock, Towers has signed outfielder Chris Snelling to a minor league contract.
The guy is made of glass, but he was (and still is) a fan favorite on Mariner blogs who called him Doyle (his middle name, apparently speaking his normal name breaks random bones on his body).
My reactions:
1. He absolutely raked for the Aussie's in the WBC, and I personally feel like he's worth a shot. If only in a late inning pinch hitting role against righties. And hell, if he doesn't make the team I'll get to watch him play in Portland.
2. Towers again signed a guy with decent upside but huge risk of injury. Do we get to see Pedro in the rotation this year? Are there any more injury prone players to be signed and who?
3. If we do keep signing these guys, we're going to need to hire more trainers.

I don't mind giving the guy a shot
but seriously, an outfielder? we are so loaded with outfielders. sigh.
I'm fine with
Gerut, Giles and Headley.
Hairston on the Bench and Venable on the rise.
Pitching is our problem
Among qualified outfielders last year, Giles ranked 16th in wOBA. I think that qualifies as good.

I would LOVE to see Pedro get signed by the Padres.
I don’t really see it happening but it would be a decent low-risk move that could put some people in the stands.

The new Huber?
And no, he doesn’t look like Mr. Box.

Can he pitch in the 7th?
I’m not really sure I get this signing unless the Padres are planning to move Giles and Kouz early in the season.
This smells like an insurance policy
He is Huber with a better bat and a lot of frailty. We don’t have that many good bats if our OF or 1B were to get hurt. He might be able to help. If Headley/Giles/Gonzalez are Plan A and Floyd/Venable/Blanks are Plan B then Snelling/Brown/Huffman are Plan C.
