Nervous?

Nope. What’s done is done, time to move on.

by zotzotpadre on Mar 12, 2009 1:46 PM PDT up reply actions

Or, and I know this sound's crazy

he could help us win some games all year long!

You never know, we could end up doing better than we thought this year.

But yeah, if we don’t contend, he could bring a good prospect

by TJB on Mar 12, 2009 1:51 PM PDT up reply actions

with Eckstein

looking like he’s gonna be our every day 2B how much time do you guys see Edgar getting?

by icaughthundleys#4 on Mar 12, 2009 1:46 PM PDT reply actions

i think edgar is already considered a bench player

his playing time probably will depend on how eck is feeling – he’s a veteran, he probably knows best when he needs a break…

"Now pinch hitting for the pitcher...

… Edgar Gonzalez"

That’s mostly it.

by TJB on Mar 12, 2009 1:48 PM PDT up reply actions

I was thinking about Edgar Gonzalez and Cliff Floyd

Don’t you think Edgar could fill Floyd’s role as the pinch hitter / DH?
Other than power, I don’t know how much more Floyd can do than Edgar

by TJB on Mar 12, 2009 1:52 PM PDT up reply actions

I've been thinking

about that a lot lately. We’re probably not going to trade Adrian so I really wonder where Blanks will fit in.

by sixpakfrombelgium on Mar 12, 2009 1:57 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah

I mean, some speculate we won’t want to pay Adrian when he can become a free agent in what I think is 2 years, but we can’t keep blanks in the minors for that long…

One or the other, i dunno, maybe we can trade Blanks for some good pitching prospects.

by TJB on Mar 12, 2009 2:03 PM PDT up reply actions

Have heard

some rumors that they could start him at AAA and try him at left field. If it works out could move Headly back to 3B and trade Kooz.

That's always an option

I guess it all depends on what he does in AAA this year

Then again, KOOZ is a somewhat proven major leaguer… tough decisions

by icaughthundleys#4 on Mar 12, 2009 2:03 PM PDT reply actions

That would be sweet

but I guess MLB doesn’t allow trading of picks.
But, if the nationals will do a post-draft trade, I’ll approve!

Blanks...

in left field? i dont think so… most “scouts” and “experts” opinions ive come across regard him as less-than adequate at 1B… more of a DH type…

mission accomplished.

by zotzotpadre on Mar 12, 2009 2:27 PM PDT reply actions

“I call him Big Hondo. I like his power. He has a chance to hit for power and average. And he’s a better first baseman than people think. And he can play left field like the real Hondo [Frank Howard]. He runs a 7.1-7.5 in the 60, too, which is good for a near-300-pounder. The biggest thing for him is if he keeps his weight down. If he does that, he’ll continue on to the Major Leagues. If he doesn’t keep his weight down, he may never make it.” — Padres scout Bill Bryk

Like I said, just a rumor I have heard thrown around.

"Black said the Padres have no plans to familiarize Blanks with left field, though team staffers have said he probably could become an adequate left fielder. In 2005, Blanks played in left for two rookie-league games, getting no assists or putouts.

"It’s something I am more than ready to at least try," said Blanks, who batted .325 with 20 home runs and 107 RBI in Double-A last season. "If anything, I think it can be a nice secondary position.""

sounds like

the “team staffers” think he’s an adequate left fielder so long as no ball are hit to him.

I'm not sure

you can justify just carrying the guy on the bench just to pinch run. If they guy can’t hit he can’t even pinch hit.

I wonder how often teams carry a guy JUST to be their pinch runner . . .

by schwing and a miss on Mar 12, 2009 3:32 PM PDT up reply actions

I think it is a risk you have to take. I just can’t see carrying a guy all year on the roster that does not contribute anything. Maybe he can pinch run, but so far he is not stealing a bunch of bases this spring either. But that could be because he can’t get on base.

Well if it pans out for him and he does become a stud somewhere else people will complain.

If he sits on the roster and stinks it up all year people will complain.

Kind of a lousy situation. I do hope it works out for him, but so far it is not pretty.
