Towers having a tough time putting a bullpen together

XX Sports Radio: Kevin Towers Interview (MP3)

  • It's tough with the WBC going on to evaluate talent, but it's given them a chance to see some of the lower level guys.
  • Correia has thrown the ball very well.  Josh Geer's velocity is not where it was last year.   Correia and Geer are the front runners for the 4 and 5 spot.
  • There are 4 to 5 spots open in the bullpen.
  • There might be 2 or 3 guys who end up in the bullpen that aren't even in Padres camp.  Towers is scouring the waiver wire.
  • The bonding between Hundley and the pitching staff is important, that's why the WBC is really hurting.
  • Towers tells a funny story about his experience pitching to Garvey's head when he was in Spring Training.

KT is insane

The bullpen is FINE. We have literally 30 bullpen possibilities in camp. Nova, Burke, Patterson, Britton, Ryu, Thatcher, Hampson, Reineke, Ekstrom, Adams, Buschman, DeHoyos, Inman, Lopez, Moreno, Silva, Perez, the list goes on and on. I’m pretty sure they can construct a decent bullpen out of that and Heath and the rest. The problem is the ROTATION!!!! How does he not see that. Other than Peavy and CY, we don’t have one starter than would crack the rotation on any of the other teams. NOT ONE! Not Baek, not Correria, not…who else is there? We seriously have no starters. At all. Zero. Ramos and Carillo will NEVER be major league starters. Leblanc and Geer are fringe starters. How on earth does he feel good about the rotation???? This baffles the f@ck out of me.

I'm with you that the rotation is a bigger problem

but i can see where having one more vet in the pen would be good
so many unproven guys, it would be NICE to have someone more experienced down in there.

But then again, relievers are just unpredictable, usually the experienced guys just get blown out anyway.
Might as well just have the AAA carousel ready and keep bringing an assortment of guys in to take care of business.

Did I just point / counterpoint myself? I need to just shut up.

We need SP

its not like

either should is something to be happy about, both are below average at best bottom 2 or 3 teams at worst except peavy

Bud Black, if nothing else, he's even keel.

Maybe

They should consider trading Peavy for 3-4 decent players?

He doesn't sounds particularly thrilling.
Manuel and Minaya disagreed on the long-term prospects for Sanchez, who struggled through a comeback year last season and had trouble getting his fastball above 87 mph this spring.

“He showed some improvement, but the location was not what we felt,” Minaya said. “I asked the question: ‘Where is he compared to last year?’ And we didn’t see that much of an improvement.”

And a double.

Good thing he knows Lilly well enough to hit him!

If only he knew our pitchers now….

Don't worry

his mentor rating is so high that he doesn’t even need to know our pitchers
