Welcome, Cliff Floyd

Cliff Floyd is now a Padre

See, and all of you were worried!   The Padres have made sure that they've attacked the market for every aged veteran out there.  The new ownership is determined to have the greatest disabled list in MLB history.

ESPN's Jayson Stark says the deal guarantees him less than $1MM.  Floyd, 36, hit .268/.349/.455 in 284 plate appearances for the Rays last year; he suffered a slightly torn labrum in the World Series.

Brilliant

Its Tony Clark only without the ability to play in the field, how is this old injured individual going to cover ANY ground at Petco? He had a hard enough time doing it with the Mets!

Why are they torturing us?

by TheAxManCometh on Feb 5, 2009 9:07 AM PST reply actions

Yeah

Initially I liked the signing because I assumed that he played the field in a limited role last year. Nope— just DH.

I wonder if we’re going to see those knees patrolling Petco? My guess is no, and we just signed a handful of plate appearances. Seems kinda pointless, being an NL team and all.

Tony Clark could play the field?

That’s news to me.

Like it

Just like I liked the Tony Clark signing at the time. Let’s use him only as a pinch hitter, then stick him in the field for the entirety of a 21-inning game.

what are they thinking?

my guess is, if we keep him healthy and on the bench till july, someone with a busted up DH will send us some useless youth in return.

i dont get it.

mission accomplished.

or maybe

everyone’s DH will break, so demand will skyrocket.

They should've gotten instead

Luis Gonzalez (who could at least play LF) or even hell Mark Sweeney

I don't think I could take it

if Sweeney came back for a third tour.

Cliff Floyd is a great player but...

1) We have the best first baseman in the league, and he plays all 162

2) We are in the national league and don’t need a DH

why did we sign Cliff Floyd? extra first base coach?

by pastorn on Feb 5, 2009 4:37 PM PST reply actions

If you look at our roster

and you assume Venable is going to Portland, then we have no left handed bats off the bench when Gerut, Giles, Headley, Rodriguez and Gonzalez are in the lineup. He becomes the go to pinch hitter in these situations. Plus, if you have an injury in the OF then he can trot out to LF against righties. And there still is the possibility that Adrian gets hurt. Who plays 1B then? He also has the added bonus that his main risk is injury. So he’s either usable or he frees up a roster space where you can call up a Venable or maybe a pitcher if you’re about to go to Coors.

agree

on all counts.

it can’t possibly be seen as a bad move to sign him. it can be viewed as a good move or a nothing move.

I dug out this card earlier today...

I didn’t put it on FoC since he’s not a Padre on the card but I figured it was sightworthy nonetheless.

I believe

I have this card as well….somewhere. I may also have a similar one for Topps.

A few years too late

I like Cliff Floyd, but this signing is just a few years too late. He can’t play in the field. Anytime you pinch hit with him, someone else will have to take the field after his at bat. The Padres don’t need a DH because they are a National League team. I’m all for locker room presence, but when was the last time a MLB game was played inside a locker room? The Padres are just stuffing the locker room with these types of players that are past their time of contributing on the field.

I see what you mean but I still think it's a good move.

I think it’s wise for a team in a youth movement to use its fringe spots on grizzled role model/ mentor/ coach on the field types, however minimal their statistical impact may be. I honestly believe that having a guy like Maddux or Tony Clark around drastically impacts player development. From all I’ve heard, Cliff The Barber’s one of those kinds of guys who’s a natural leader and can get the kids started on the right track and has been serving admirably in that capacity for a few years.

The signing is fine

If it was a few years ago it would have been for $7.5M a year (plus multi-year) and he would be 1 of our 3-4-5 hitters.

This move is just a low risk/low reward for a guy who can put together a few good AB’s and not make us call up someone from AA when an injury happens or someone needs a few days off.
