I was reading my handy dandy Baseball Prospectus, specifically the Dodgers chapter, and I was looking at Joe Torre's stats I noticed that Bud Black isn't too far off from this guy.
In 2008, Black's starters averaged a pitch count of 91.0. He let 49 go 100+ pitches and 3 got 120+. He got 74 Quality Starts out of his pitchers and let 7 QS get blown by leaving the starter in too long.
In 2008, Torre's starters averaged a pitch count of 90.9. He let 47 go 100+ pitches and 1 got 120+. He got 78 Quality Starts out of his pitchers and let 4 QS get blown by leaving the starter in too long.
Going back to past years, with Bochy thrown in for comparison:
Mgr Year PC 100+ 120+ QS BQS
Black 2007 90.1 47 0 89 7
Torre 2007 90.8 39 0 75 9
Torre 2006 90.7 44 1 74 8
Bochy 2008 99.9 91 8 80 9
Bochy 2007 98.8 78 8 78 7
Bochy 2006 95.8 66 5 83 9
I'm not exactly sure what all this means other than Black and Torre seem to manage starting pitchers very similarly and it is quite different from Bochy's style. In any case, I have to wonder: Are we giving Black's pitcher management a hard time because it's not good strategy or because it's different from Bochy who was the only home team manager we have for over a decade?
