The Coach and Scott Miller's Fireside Chats

XX Sports Radio: Scott Miller (MP3) [4.25 MB, 18:35]

  • You know Aroid is a big deal when during Obama's address, one of the questions to the president is about Arod and steroids.
  • Scott respects marquee players who step up and accept the blame, but only if they haven't already been caught.
  • Added to his "A Fraud" reputation by telling Katie Couric that he never needed steroids, "different year, different song."
  • If this drug test hadn't been leaked, he wouldn't be out apologizing.
  • Coach asks how we can know that guys aren't still cheating. Short answer: we can't
  • Scott says it's gotten better, statistics show homerun numbers dropping, but they're still not testing for HGH and other loopholes.
  • After A-rod's lies to Katie Couric and confession after being caught, who's to say he's not still using.
  • Gene Orza is a guy who has tipped players off to steroid testing, said it's no more dangerous than smoking cigarettes. Needs to be fired by the union ASAP.
  • Coach asks if they should blow up the union, also thinks they should make a clean break with the comissioner's office. Get Bud Selig and his heirarchy out of there.
  • Scott asks if Coach thinks Bud Selig getting paid $18m a year is overpaid.
  • Coach asks what Bud has done other than nod his head to the owners
  • Scott explains Bud Selig has gotten to where he is by building consensus, not leading, getting the owners to agree to things like Wild Card playoff round and revenue sharing.
  • Curt Schilling, the blogger, things all 104 names should be released, Scott agrees, but he's a few years too late.
  • Scott wants to know where the clean players were back before drug testing, before it was a huge topic. Why didn't they go to the union then and try to avoid this guilt by association?
  • With steroids being a prevailing topic at that time, they should have gone to Don Fehr (executive director, MLBPA) and said they don't want to be associated with this.
  • Now, dozens of clean players are tarred by this brush, worse, have lost jobs to guys that were juicing.
  • You can be cynical and say everyone's dirty, but you want to believe some guys are clean.
  • Greg Maddux is awesome, isn't he? Now he looks even better.
  • "We used to say four or five years ago [of Maddux and Clemens], "We are watching two of the greatest right-handers of all time." "
  • We'll probably find out the other 103 names sooner or later. There's government sources. There may be a player who will, years from now, retire and tell his story... in a book, perhaps.
  • Old-timers will look better and better and better.
  • Scott voted for Andre Dawson for HoF after much deliberation. He felt like Andre was on the cusp, not quite HoF material, but then he considered he was measuring his numbers too harshly against today's sluggers.
  • Coach asks again if the comissioner's office and player's union head should be blown up.
  • Scott explains that they've been setting attendance records with the exception of last year.
  • Coach interjects that they did it under false pretenses.
  • Scott says it's like selling your soul to the devil.
  • A new comission and new player's union would not be a bad thing.
  • Scott's cellphone is about to die.
  • Manny should sign with the Dodgers later this week.
  • Adam Dunn should go after Manny.
  • Scott is surprised Orlando Hudson is still out there.
  • Scott thinks any change in blood for the Padres is good at this point. John Moores has lost credibility.
  • There's inherent danger in thinking Jeff Moorad will be a savior, it's like Obama taking over "in this economy," it's going to take awhile.
  • Scott leaves for Spring Training in Florida on Thursday. THIS THURSDAY!
