Projected Opening Day Lineup
So you've read about the projected 25-man roster and discussed it... now let's see where you think these guys will be batting... the primary discussions have been about who will be playing shortstop, whether kouz will be ready and who's going to play second base. here's mine:
- Everth Cabrera, SS
- David Eckstein, 2B
- Brian Giles, RF
- Adrian Gonzalez, 1B
- Chase Headley, 3B
- Jody Gerut, CF
- Nick Hundley, C
- Scott Hairston, LF

Wishful thinking that Cabrera will be capable of leading off
That’s way too much pressure to put on him. The organization would never set him up to fail like that. Plus he’s a stolen base guy, ideally who don’t want to put those guys at the top of the lineup since stolen base attempts decrease the chance of the batter having a successful at bat. It’s much better to put them towards the bottom.
Barring injury it should be:
Gerut CF
Eckstein 2B
Giles RF
Gonzalez 1B
Kouz 3B
Headley LF
Hundley C
Rodriguez SS
Peavy P
I believe that it is the FO’s plan at this point. Although you could filp-flop Giles and Gerut without upsetting anyone.

Another thing about Everth
According to the padres.com roster, he’ll be wearing #1. That’s kind of cool if you ask me.

a walk and a stolen base is as good as a double
i think his on base percentage and his stolen bases will put him in scoring position a ton… giving giles and adrian a ton of rbi opportunities.
i see your point about putting too much pressure on a youngster, but i guess ultimately it depends on his personality. if the padres think he can handle the pressure of leading off, then i don’t see any reason why he shouldn’t. personally, i would love an exciting obp/sb/ss/youngster at the top of the lineup.
mission accomplished.

I think he can probably handle leading off
Someday. But he’s got to learn to face pitching 3 levels higher than he was used to. And to try to do that without seeing the guy pitch before facing him the first time and having to make sure he sets the table for Giles and Adrian. I know people think that these young players are babied, but that is a lot to ask of a guy. Most rookies who have passed all the minor league tests don’t hit well when they first start out and this guy hasn’t even done that. So saying that you think he has the “on base percentage” to lead off is a little odd. The Padres will benefit greatly if this guy succeeds so lets let him learn instead of pretending he is the cornerstone of the offense. And if that means that LRod has to play some or Cabrera has to bat later in the order to keep the pressure, then let’s do that.

i dont disagree. we don’t want to ruin what could become a very nice ball player by putting him in a position to fail. it’s simply wishful thinking i guess. maybe a year or two down the line he can fill in at the top of the order and give padres fans something exciting to cheer about. i dont think this kid is going to all-of-a-sudden forget where the strike zone is, but, you’re right, he’s facing pitching unlike any he’s seen before and pitches that move more than anything he’s seen before.
if he succeeds and sticks as a padre this year, do you think he’ll be in AA to start 2010?
mission accomplished.

If he eeks it out as a Padre
Doing enough to stay on the roster, but never really getting a starting job, then I see him going to AAA. It’s not like the Padres have other SS options for Portland next year, and their only other SS prospect is Drew Cumberland and he could be reaching AA in 2010. Although, that leaves no room at the inn for Jesus Lopez, but he’s a no-hit-good-glove guy and I’m not sure the Padres are too worried about where he fits in. Sorry Jesus Lopez fans.
