Open Thread: Winter Meetings
It looks like Corey Brock has all the Padres news over at his Twitter Page. The Pads signed Gwynn, promoted Josh Stein and are probably not going to sign Kevin Correia..

Full Count » No on Adrian Gonzalez … for now
New San Diego Padres GM Jed Hoyer says that it makes no sense to deal Gonzalez now. Gonzalez will make $4.75 million in 2010 and a club option for $5.5 million in 2011. Hoyer does however admit that it will be difficult to hold onto him long-term. -

Is anyone from GLB at the winter meetings?
I ask because you can’t get in unless you’re press or somehow officially associated with MLB, and I’m sitting here 25 miles from Indy, wishing there was some way to get in.

We are just gutting the Angels!
News
The San Diego Padres are aggressively shopping right-handed closer Heath Bell, who converted 42 saves in 48 chances last season, and a source indicated the Cubs are among the teams that have expressed early interest. To make a deal happen, the Cubs probably would have to give up shortstop Ryan Theriot or catcher Geovany Soto. -- Soto please!

Sophmore Slump
Soto would be a great gamble, not sure you could get more potential value of Bell.
Not sure why Padres would want Theriot unless they are looking to bump Eck to the bench, but even then Theriot arbitration eligible and only under team control for the next 3 years.
.
I think soto would be a great pick up
And he could provide some big offense as well. I’m yet to read a person who thinks that two years ago was the odd year (when he won Roy) whereas most think his slump year was an oddity

I don't understand
not bringing back Kevin Correia. I agree that he may have pitched over his head a bit last year, but really they need to ADD another Correia type…not LOSE one. Having a veteran guy to eat 180+ innings seems really valuable…. this move makes me think that by the payroll starting with a 4 that means it’s gonna be a lot closer to 40 than maybe 49. bummer.
Expensive.
I think Corey said around $5 mill.
But I agree with you.

As much as I hate to say it.
The Dodgers have a championship level core and the Padres do not. The Padres need to develop their core, not worry about filling in the swing man slot on some future championship club.
KC isn't a great player....
but he’s one of those solid inning eaters that can fill a nice role on most teams in the back end of the rotation. On a young staff like we are going to have next season being able to rely on 180-200 strong innings is extremely valuable, especially with an injury prone CY.
i understand what you are saying
but that 5 million he is looking for is a lot better spent on something else.
552
I have a feeling his final price wouldn't be 5M for the Padres....
If he hits the open market it woould probably end up even higher than that. Even if it was 5M though……not sure what else you’d spend it on that would add the same value to the team as 200 strong innings….maybe a Mike Cameron?
Didn't Abreu sign for 5 million last year or something like that?
you never know what deals are out there till January.
5 Million on a soon to be journeyman type pitcher is a bit steep. If we had a team ready to compete, maybe i could see spending 5 million on a back of the rotation “type” starter.
Signing and trading him is always an option i guess, but the chances of us getting anything in return for a back end type guy, signed for 5 million is nil ..
let him go. we have options in AAA
552
Not that Correia was the difference
between competing and not next year, but I think that letting him go is a sure sign that this upcoming season is going to be a similar frustrating building year.
I don’t understand the soon to be journeyman thing… I mean that’s certainly possible, but I think his performance last season at least another one year deal. It’s not like he’s demanding a multi-year contract. Again though, I’m assuming that he would take less than 5M to stay in San Diego…if he really is demanding that much then I’m much less inclinded to want him to stick around.
I believe he made 750k last year, and our best offer to him now is 1.1M… It just seems like we should at least be willing to go closer to 2-2.5M. That isn’t much of a reward for a season like he had (supposedly worth 10.9M) in baseball terms.
makes no bones about it .
this year is going to be a similar frustrating building year …
If we could sign Correia for say two years, 5 million, that wouldn’t be so bad.
Let Petco inflate his stats in ’09, and then sending him packing in a trade next winter. A reliable starting pitcher (2 yrs of petco inflated stats) under the age of 30, signed below market value could fetch a decent haul.
552
Reliever U.
the strategy above is the same strategy the Friars should be using for middle relievers.
Just call it Reliever U.
Heath Bell is going to fetch a pretty penny this winter.
Mike Adams after next winter.
We have 27 pitchers on the 40 man roster ….
Now that Hoffman is gone, we should be churnning petco inflated relievers ..
552
Unfortunately
GMs seem to be wising up about overpaying for relievers.

MLB Trade Rumors
Kouzmanoff to Twins or Giants?
http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2009/12/giants-padres-discussing-kouzmanoff.html
Needed though sad
We have to move headley or kouz – simple as that. But what the giants would offer for kouz is nothing. If I’m getting squat for kouz then at least ship him to Minnesota and out of the NL west

could use the double plays too.
Yankees Tigers D'Backs
3 way trade
Yankees get Granderson
I'm unsure about the trade
The DBacks get Ian Kennedy and Edwin Jackson. That being said, somehow I’m still somewhat optimistic about this.
Tigers got the best side of that deal by far

Is there more than one Cabrera?
Whoops, yes I meant Melky Cabrera.
Not that he is going to the Padres, but it might free up another CF if he goes elsewhere.
There are more than one Cabreras on each team
I imagine that makes Melky expendable; KT is close with Cashman but obviously that doesn’t help us anymore.

from the dbacks perspective
They need kennedy to be a solid stater to make this work. Basically they are trading one potential stud pitcher for one that is pretty good already, but is not cheap and one potentially good starter. Quality for quantity. Its a short term solution for a team that wasn’t very good in 2009, but probably doesn’t help them become a playoff team unless kennedy really exceeds expectations. But keeping scherzer wasn’t necessarily the answer either.

Fangraphs loves the deal for the Yankees
and hates it for the Diamondbacks.
From the Yankees perspective, this deal is almost too good to be true. Heading into his age 29 season, Granderson is a legitimate +4 win center fielder signed to a bargain contract for the next four years. I ranked him as the 22nd most valuable asset in terms of trade value in baseball over the summer, and the Yankees are getting him for a variety pack of role players. He instantly makes their team better, giving them a legitimate all-star center fielder who should thrive in Yankee Stadium. For as much as the Yankees have a payroll advantage, they continue to win because Brian Cashman targets the right players. Granderson is a fantastic acquisition for them.
[…]
Arizona, though… what a mess. Jackson and Kennedy will shore up their rotation, but they aren’t worth a kid as good as Max Scherzer. Jackson’s a mid-rotation starter whose salaries are escalating in arbitration, while Kennedy is a back-end starter who missed most of 2009. They didn’t get better, they didn’t save money, and they didn’t get younger. This move is just not a good one for the D’Backs, unless there’s another impressive piece going to Arizona that hasn’t been reported.

There were a bunch of other stat-sy sites that analyzed the deal for all involved. I still love it for the Yanks, hate it for the Tigers and I think it’s a nice gamble for the DBacks.

Kennedy was a top prospect but hasn't really panned out as the Yankees had hoped

Kennedy would have never worked out for the Yankees
They give their young guys too short a leash because there is too much on the line. Kennedy will now get every opportunity to reach that potential everyone saw in him before the Yankees started effing with him and he got hurt.

I dont understand why he doesnt want to trade Gonzalez or lock him up long term
We need to give this guy an extension and not let him get away. Its not like we’re going to compete much next year so the answer really doesnt seem like its hold on to take our best shot at winning.
We either need to lock him up long term- give him another 3 or 4 years- or trade him for some top prospects.
by Balls and Strikes on Dec 8, 2009 7:14 PM PST reply actions
I know why he doesn't want to lock him up long term
Because you’d have to overpay to do so. It would be foolish for Adrian to not pursue free agency unless he got an insane extension. Adrian will make Teixeira-type money in free agency, which is probably beyond what the Padres can pay (definitely beyond what they are willing to pay) and would want a deal much longer than 3 or 4 years.
Trading him for top prospects is a risky gambit. You need to really like what you’re getting back because you are crippling the team’s offense in the meantime. He’s also really affordable and so it’s pretty reasonable to keep him her and see if you can make something happen with the guys you have. I think most of the fanbase wants to see what the team we have right now can do on the field. If we see it and it’s not good enough to compete this year or next, then you trade him.
Wisdom can not be cultivated through ignorance of information.
"Overpay" is not the same thing
as not willing to pay.
Other than that, I agree
No, i meant overpay
I meant a value greater than what he expect to get if he went to free agency. That’s usually the only way you can keep a high profile player from pursuing free agency. I was taking the padres cheapness out of the equation for a second.
Wisdom can not be cultivated through ignorance of information.

agreed with Wonko
fun thing to do is look through all the “big” FA signings over the last 15 years. How many of those now are bad contracts teams are looking to unload, or just ran its course. I say maybe 85% of FA signings that are multiyear don’t work out for the club unless they are one of the 4 teams that can actually absorb a $15M+ contract and not have it be more than 10% of their payroll.
Most good signings tend to be clubs keeping their own talent, and buying out arbitration years, or 1-2 year deals.
I always ask people over the last 5 seasons “The Padres, should have done x or x in the offseason”…like sign Adruw Jones, Alfonso Soriano, Juan Pierre, etc…most multi year deals don’t work out. Look at Arod’s deal for the Rangers…he put up HUGE numbers afterwards and they still traded him and pay part of his salary to play for the yankees.
"Over? Did you say "over"? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!"
I agree with you for the most part
The 85 % quote is complete nonsense however.
And it is extremely nonsensical if you include situations where a player resigns with his existing team, which is what the case would be if AG signed with the Padres.
looking at the list again.
I would say its closer to 95%
"Over? Did you say "over"? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!"
