Around SBN: Tiger Woods, Tony Romo Grouped Together At Pebble Beach

He's a backup catcher. I seem to recall he's a decent albeit unproven one. It's not flashy, but it could be a solid pickup. At least we have a backup catcher candidate now. We acquired him for a PTBNL and cash considerations.

Ryan, 25, hit .257/.359/.455 in 235 Triple A plate appearances this year. Heading into the season, Baseball America spoke of Ryan's "prodigious raw power" and "plus-plus arm," but considered his receiving skills a work in progress.

What's a Dusty Ryan?

He apparently has “plus power” and a “plus plus arm” but can’t receive well…………….soooo why’s he a catcher?

Young and average sounds really good for a backup catcher

Yeah, i was only half serious

I actually really like this pickup. Better to let a couple of young guys learn on the job and grow rather than pay some vet twice as much with less production. I like having options with 2 young catchers.

After losing Alfonzo and Blanco this makes sense.

Although I don’t think they’ll stop looking for catchers.

Maybe

But, Ryan belongs in the majors at this point and Canham should be the AAA catcher. Just looking at his offensive numbers, I think this could be a guy Jed likes. He might even like him more than Hundley since Nick’s main skill at the plate is power and Ryan has OBP and Power.

I am confused

because this guy is a position player, at a position we are in need of, who we haven’t heard of, as opposed to another reliever we’d never heard of with a ~5 ERA.

According to multiple sources

the Rangers will receive a PTBNL or cash considerations. They will not be receiving both. Hmm…

by polyrhythm07 on Dec 21, 2009 10:37 PM PST reply actions

And by the Rangers I mean Tigers, of course. :P

Yeah

I saw that later. Knowing this crowd though, they are going to forget by the time the transaction sorts itself out.

Was checking out some platoon statistics

I guess Hundley sucks at hitting lefties (this is true in the minors as well, not that he’s ever hit righties that well he’s just better at that than against lefties) and Ryan is a lefty masher. So expect to see Hundley out there on most days and then Ryan get the starts against southpaws.

Ryan looks like he hits LHP better than RHP

But I dunno about calling him a “masher” just yet.

by Dex on Dec 22, 2009 7:37 PM PST up reply actions

I'm projecting

He has hit for power against lefties, does that work better?

The Padres wouldn't dare go into the season..

with this guy as their sole option for backup catcher ….would they ?

Then again they went into camp in 2008 with Luis Rodriguez as their starting SS.

by texpadre on Dec 23, 2009 12:32 PM PST reply actions

Why wouldn't they?

This guy is solid and they already have a AAA catcher.
