Around the Mission: 12/11 Padres Links

The gist of this "Around the Mission" is that nothing happened at the winter meetings, unless Kouz's nickname is "Groundwork".

The Kouz article gave me a laugh
Looking back at the stretch of time in early 2007, when he was batting something like .167, he kept a great attitude, kept getting in his work, kept pressing hard and staying in the game, and he didn’t give up. The press was all over him, the fans weren’t too happy, but Bud Black kept the faith in him and he didn’t disappoint. He finally got out of that funk and finished wonderfully.

How many games did we lose while he struggled? We’re trying to be competitive baseball team, not a cheerleading squad. Which is another reason why I don’t like Bud Black, lol.

Groundwork

must’ve been the luckiest guy at the meetings.

Isn't it enough to know that I ruined a pony making a gift for you? ◔ヮ◔

Not Friar-related...

…but can you believe the Astros gave Brandon Lyon $15 million for 3 years? WTF?

That's Ed Wade for ya

I guess he forgot to attend Dumpster Diving 101 when he in San Diego.

That would seem rather silly

They’d have to give up something and pay arbitration prices. They would have been better off outbidding the Mets for Blanco. Navarro does seem like a good fit but I’m betting they would only want him at bargain basement prices.

Yes but I'm sure they would not have to give up much to get him

probably just one of the dozens of relief pitchers they have on their roster at the moment. Unless the Padres are planning on over paying him or signing him to a multi-year deal I don’t think they would have much of a chance to lure him to SD, Petco isn’t exactly a hitters first choice to play 81 games in when he is coming off a down year.

Navarro's rep ain't great

He didn’t hit last year, he’s not seen as a great defensive catcher and I don’t think he’s ever gotten credit for handling a staff. I don’t actually think they’ll be much of a market for him. I don’t think he’s worth arbitration type money (which in my mind is the same as overpaying for him as a free agent) or a multiyear deal, but if they can sign him to a 1 year Blanco-type contract to be Hundley’s caddy that works for me since he’s latin and lefthanded. Anything more than that is probably not worth the risk.

Oh

He’s also a line drive hitter and can draw a walk and run a little, so that’s good Petco stuff.

It was revealed during Blancos physical w/ the Muts that he has shoulder issues

Probably the reason for Jed saying adios. Good move!! Mets took away half his salary and turned it into bonuses.
Friggin Nats gave Pudge a fat deal too, stupid arses!! Is Gary Bennett still playing?

If I pick it, I flick it

That was from an old shoulder injury

Padres would have seen the same thing when they gave him a physical. The Mets just got nervous about it for some reason.

Mets medical staff.

I’d take anything a Mets doctor says with a grain of salt.

Hello Rox fan here

Garrett Atkins was non tendered today(which btw I am not happy about)

just wondering since Kouz has been rumored to be on the trade block, if there has been any interest shown in acquiring Atkins? Last year he fell off but I think he’ll turn it around…

Dear Rockies - Thank you for a wonderful rollercoaster of a season! NL Wild Card Champs. Best turnaround in MLB history for a team to win the Wild Card.

Garrett Atkins-So Long, Farewell, Auf weidersehen, Goodbye!! Thank you for being a great Rockie! GOOD LUCK!
Troy Tulowitzki-MLB's BEST shortstop..nuff said
Yorvit Torrealba- Re-sign!! he's en Fuego!!
Brad Hawpe- I hope I get to see you in a Rockies uniform again!
Dexter Fowler - prowling CF, WC in his talons, leaping Utleys in a single bound!

Pretty sure they'd give third base to Headley.

That’s the main reason they want to trade Kouz in the first place.

If we didn't have Salazar

I could see Atkins as a decent bench bat. The priorities for the bench right now is a right handed hitter who can play CF (this could also be a starter and then TGJr goes to the bench), a backup (preferably left handed catcher) and a middle infielder who can play SS. If Kouz is traded then there is probably one more bench spot open, which would we’d probably want someone who could play 3B (unless the “middle infielder who can play SS” can also play 3B or we trust Forsythe or Zawadzki to step in should something happen to Headley).

It’s probably all moot, someone else will probably find a roster spot for him where he gets more ABs. And if not, I could see a higher profile team come calling for the same bench role I mentioned for the Padres (the Yankee come to mind where he could get some DH ABs against lefties and backup ARod and Teix).
