Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

The winter meetings are done, not much happened, but USA Today's Bob Nightengale still firmly expects to see Kouz and Bell traded before long. Coming in far short of Jeff Moorad's projections, NIghtengale thinks the Padres will have a "25-to-30 million dollar payroll" in 2010.

Same observation

Both Moorad and Hoyer said 40. Not sure what this 25-30 claim is based on — I suspect bad reporting.

Based on...

Reality. In the past, Kevin Towers would quote payroll from an inflated standpoint, conveniently forgetting contracts that they had dropped during the year.

So, I imagine we will start out at a $40 million payroll, but part way through the year we will trade a few players and drop some payroll. Though, I imagine that Jed will still talk about us being “competitive” because we have a $40 million payroll….. just like in years past. depressing.

I still can’t believe that baseball approved the sale of our team to an ownership group that didn’t have enough money to buy the club straight out, let alone have enough money to operate a competitive club.

Yes, better for baseball to leave the team

with Moores. Unbelievable, I say!

Yea, I keep getting around 22 mil

And thats before arbitration but I don’t see how they would get to 40 mil. I think they will end up around 30 mil, but will this be the lowest payroll ever for the Padres or their lowest ranking ever?

I use cots’ contracts, but if someone has a better list i definitely like to see it.

why?

Why should I care what bob nightengale thinks will happen? What possibly qualifies him to predict what the padres will do any better than joe blogger? I never understand the “so-in-so, who is not connected with the teams expects x to happen”. It just makes me think, go away you toolshed come back when you have real news.
