"As far as approaching free agency, we're not going to be major players for free agents because of the size of our payroll," new general manager Jed Hoyer said Thursday. "But we're going to go after targets we like ... aggressively. We have money in the budget to spend on free agency."

Money to spend on free agency...

but the payroll will still begin with a four? We might just have a real Ensberg headline coming soon…

by goldfyngor on Nov 19, 2009 5:22 PM PST reply actions

Well we do have money to spend.

After losing Giles and Peavy and with all our young cheap players on the team I think we’re in the $35 million range (please don’t quote me on this), pending arbitration with Bell, Correia, Adams, and Kouz. That’s at least $5-10 million to spend, which is a far cry from the $2 million we spent last year. Of course I doubt we’ll spend that much considering Hoyer doesn’t think we have any huge holes (which we don’t), but still. We can certainly afford a Mike Cameron if we really want it.

by JollyWaffle on Nov 19, 2009 6:56 PM PST up reply actions

We're at

$23 million give or take. Then add the raises (I already included what they made in 2009) to Bell, Correia and Kouz (I don’t think Adams has enough service time to qualify as a Super 2). If I’m being really generous it could be $14 million in raises (I’m thinking it will be less) and so that’s a little more than the $35 million you mention, but if I’m high on the raises then that’s about right.

I’m using Cot’s Contracts for this data. The only Padres making above the lowest level of salaries (which ranges from $0.404 million to about $0.438 million) are (other than the aforementioned Bell, Correia and Kouz) are Chris Young ($6.25 million), Adrian Gonzalez ($4.75 million) and Eckstein ($1 million). So it’s 19 guys making ~$0.410 million, 3 guys making $12 million combined and then 3 other guys who will make at least $2.7 million (what they made in 2009) plus some raises that we don’t know yet.

Actually

Jolly was right on Adams, he’s arbitration eligible. We can probably assume that he’ll get close to what Bell got last year so that ~$0.800 added onto my figures.

Where does the 70 million dollar number come from?

70 million comes from...

1. 32-35 million from MLB (from the national tv/radio deals ect.)
2. 20-25 million in revenue sharing/lux tax (thou given our attendance last year we might get a bump in the 30-32 million range)
3. 12 million from local tv deal (which is the lowest in the league)
4. 2.2 million in naming rights from Petco park.

Total 66.2-74.2 give or take before they sell a ticket.

Of course we have no idea what the exact amount the Padres have to paid to service their debt. Or any other major costs, stadium/minors/front office.

Out local tv deal is the worst, I can not wait till its up.

by AirmanSD on Nov 19, 2009 7:51 PM PST up reply actions

Nevermind...

We will stay in the 20-25 million dollar range, we didnt rank in the bottom 5 in attendance. Plus this year we will get less money from revenue sharing. Since the Yankees and Mets can subtract a portion from the debt for their new stadiums.

by AirmanSD on Nov 19, 2009 7:57 PM PST up reply actions

Where can I find the info on:

Revenue sharing/ lux tax and the television revnue?

by field39 on Nov 19, 2009 8:00 PM PST up reply actions

Wall Street Journal....

If you have a subscription. But none of its going to be 100% actuate since the owners dont have to give it. Jason Stark had story on it on ESPN today or yesterday.

by AirmanSD on Nov 19, 2009 8:04 PM PST up reply actions

And then

How much of that do that have to pay per year on their stadium because the Padres still owe a boatload on that?

Also, I think the naming rights was $60 mill over 22 years, which would be $2.7 million by my math.

Additionally, that money would also be getting used for signing draft picks, international players, coaching staffs, farm systems, travel (for players, scouts and front office personnel), front office, security, utilities and other investments (i.e. the Dominican facility). My understanding is that most “fixed” revenue, like the national TV radio deals and naming rights usually go towards the typical overhead of running a business and the more variable revenue like ticket sales, concessions and souvenirs goes towards the actual payroll for the baseball team. However, I’m not even close to being sure as to what most of those things even cost outside of the payroll and draft picks.

Just trying to help.

According to Forbes

They are carrying about $240M in debt. There is another article somewhere, that said it was all financed with 8% non-callable bonds.

correct

Plus the City get 20% of the gate.

by Ron Mexico on Nov 20, 2009 9:37 AM PST up reply actions

I mentioned that

We have no idea what the actual cost of running the organization is. None. Mainly cause the owners will not open their books.

Though we can get a solid idea of what they owe on the stadium/loans with Forbes. The Padres are one the hook for 173 million over a 20 year term, assuming equal payments would be about 8.65 million a year. But we have no idea what the terms of the sale are, if that was included in the price or not. I am assume with the deal for 500 million it was included, meaning that Moores had is still responsible for the bonds, but we dont know if the Moorad group had the money or if they themselves got a loan.

Its impossible from the outside to say with any real proof if the revenue sharing money is being wasted or not.

by AirmanSD on Nov 19, 2009 9:59 PM PST up reply actions

I must be reading the Forbes article wrong

I thought 400M in value with a 60% debt/ value would be 240 ???

by field39 on Nov 19, 2009 10:08 PM PST up reply actions

You are not.

I wasnt stating for all of the debt with my numbers. Just what the Padres owe one the stadium. I have no information on what other debt they maybe be carrying.

by AirmanSD on Nov 19, 2009 10:17 PM PST up reply actions

The debt service alone is staggering.

The Moorad group is going to need extremely deep pockets, just to dig out of the debt hole.

by field39 on Nov 19, 2009 10:22 PM PST up reply actions

yanks

are not paying lux tax this year or the next 20 and have a HUGE discount in revenue sharing since they can “hide money” with the new stadium deal they shoved down Seligs throat.

I'm still mad at Bochy for not playing Nady

For Pete’s sake, Bochy played Miguel Ojeda—a crappy backup catcher—over Nady (in the outfield!) at least once or twice.

by parvulesco on Nov 20, 2009 7:02 AM PST up reply actions

Nady

Is not really a starting caliber player at this point. He’s more of a platoon guy that plays okay defense because of his arm. He’s not really the sort of player the Padres would want to invest in.

The only free agents the Padres should sign are ones that will sign short term deals and fill a need that the organization is positive cannot be filled internally. Like 2nd base and David Eckstein where you are signing a low risk, somewhat low reward player to fill a role that would otherwise be occupied by a high risk, low reward player. Backup catcher would be another spot for a free agent to fill. Right handed platoon CF would be another. Possible UT INF (that can play SS). That’s basically it though. Every other role on this team can be filled internally at low cost and chance of medium to high reward, which beats whatever is available to the Padres in free agency.

couldnt he platoon the corners?

we have veneble, c. gwynn’s nephew and louis durango in cf. im really not sure why the outfield is a concern.

I didn't think Durango was considered the answer?

If he’d be okay in left field I’d play him there. Headley is Captain Strikeout, and Gwynn Jr. and Venable have looked very good at times in center and right, respectively.
