At first base, San Diego Padres slugger Adrian Gonzalez repeated his 2008 crown by tying for fourth in the league with a fielding percentage of .995. Gonzalez made only seven errors in 1,367 total chances in the midst of his second straight All-Star campaign.

Adrian wins at 1b
Zimmerman wins at 3rd.
That sounds good.

Yeah, even though I was hoping Kouz would win it...
it’s tough to argue with Zimmerman. He’s all over the field.

Popularity award.
This is a terrible thing for the Padres. - Jerry Coleman

It certainly has its flaws,
but if it were just a popularity award, a Padre, Astro, and National would not have won.
Zimmerman and Adrian are not the two most popular players at their positions.

After seeing Jeter win at SS yesterday
I can’t believe it has any other meaning than a popularity award.

for him he had a good year
http://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playerid=826&position=SS#fielding
But compared to a lot of other AL Shortstops, it wasn’t necessarily the best:

I go along with that,
But that is a far cry from Hobo implying that Jeter winning means the whole thing is a farce.
by strummer on Nov 11, 2009 2:49 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I do think the whole thing is a farce, somewhere along the line
offensive stats got mixed in with defense. Then lazy voters just pick the popular easy choice. I am sure much like the coaches poll in college football most don’t give it much thought.

So,,,,,,,,,
AGon is more popular than Pujols? And has better offensive numbers than him?
by strummer on Nov 11, 2009 3:45 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Where did I say that?
Agon was better defensively and put up great offensive numbers. If he put up a year like 2006 offensively and the same defensive numbers as this year he wouldn’t have won, I am sure it would have been Lee or Pujols. There are picks every year that are suspect or just the same old choice. Was no one better than Hunter or Ichiro in nine straight years?

You claimed
“the lazy voters just pick the popular easy choice”.
Since when is AGon or Zimmerman the “popular easy choice”?
by strummer on Nov 12, 2009 8:30 AM PST up reply actions 1 recs
I believe he was 4th overall in UZR in the AL

popularity + offense
"I'm a Padre at heart. Always gonna root for the Padres. Twenty-five years [with this organization], how can't you? Next year I'm gonna be rooting like a son-of-a-gun for these guys and for Blackie ... I'm gonna be rooting for the next general manager here, rooting for the city, the fans, everybody. I think a lot of San Diego." -Kevin Towers

How in gods name did Kouz not win it
his glove is in the hall of fame
by 1210pads on Nov 11, 2009 1:52 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
Kouz no doubt had a great year, but Zimmerman arguably had an even better year. He has a ridiculous range at 3rd base:

cause now they can't smelt his glove into a Gold Glove award
thats how it works, right
by LJbumfool on Nov 11, 2009 4:03 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, but if nobody smelt it, how do we know who dealt it?

.255/.302/.420
You need to hit a whole lot better than that to win a Gold Glove.
by field39 on Nov 11, 2009 2:20 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
Congrats adrian
And I thought it was called a gold glove because it involved specifically defense and the best defensive efforts. There’s a silver slugger award for Hitters at each position

The voters got this one right.
Though it was close between Adrian and Derek Lee of the Cubs. Adrian’s UZR, ErrR, and DPR were higher than Lee, while Lee edged Adrian in UZR/150 and RngR.
Pujols definitely didn’t deserve it this year (his defense was barely above average), though I expected them to give it to him because of who he is.
We're boned.
by maestro876 on Nov 11, 2009 3:13 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
Overall though
Adrian’s fielding value was 3.8 runs above average, beating out Lee’s 3.7 for best 1B in the National League.
We're boned.
