Is Padres' Gonzalez on block? - SweetSpot by Rob Neyer - ESPN
Of course the Padres can't hang on to Gonzalez, because it's unlikely that they'll win 90 games in 2010 or '11 even if he's on the roster. -

Rob Neyer
Granted, you might reasonably ask, “But what if the Padres don’t get a spectacular collection of young talent when they trade Gonzalez? What happens to them then?”
The answer is that if they’re not smart enough to get a spectacular collection of young talent when trading Gonzalez, they wouldn’t be smart enough to build a spectacular collection of talent around Gonzalez if they kept him. You know?
I’m not a big fan of dealing Aid…but this logic makes sense to me.

why does he mention Sandy Alderson?
does Neyer think he still works for the Padres?

Did you expect accuracy??
That would of required five minutes of actual research.

This is at least the second time that Neyer's done that
I’ve sent him e-mails twice reminding him that Alderson left when Moorad took over. Pretty sad that a professional baseball writer can’t stay abreast of these things (or read his e-mail).
Then again, Neyer sucks, so this shouldn’t be surprising.

If Hoyer can figure this out
He’s waaay smarter than I am. I’ve scoured organizations and wracked my brain and I can’t figure out a trade that makes the Padres any more of a contender in 2012-15 than they would be in 2010-2011 if they kept Adrian. One of the problems with the Padres offense is getting power from the corner outfield spots. If you trade Adrian and move Blanks to 1B you have just made that problem worse. Unless there is someone cheap enough and good enough to fill that void. And I seriously doubt you can get back a CF or C or 2B or 3B that can do that. And trying to make up that difference with young pitching seems really risky.
It’s just really hard to come up with a better plan than take our chances in 2010 and 2011 with Adrian and see what can come out of the farm system. Of course, going that route puts the onus on the Alderson/Towers/Fuson guys to put us in contention and who knows if Hoyers ego is okay with that.

As far as hitters are concerned in the Boston Org
The best hitters they have are Lars Anderson and Josh Reddick. Anderson was considered to be both the best hitter and the best power in the system, though he regressed quite a bit this past year. Reddick is second in both categories and has the best defensive arm in the system (basing these off of some red sox sites and baseball america).
Including both of them means you could move Anderson to 1B and leave Blanks (who handled the job pretty well) in the OF. Add Reddick/Venable at CF/RF and you’ve got some decent young hitters. Headley at 3B (assuming Kouz gets traded) and you’d have a line up I guess like:
Cabrera-Eckstein-Venable-Blanks-Anderson-Headley-Reddick-Hundley
Which is nothing to sneeze in terms of potential BUT would need an upgrade of some kind at catcher. And the Sox don’t have any real catchers who can hit in their system except for Kotteras who they stole from us.
The PROBLEM is that knowing the Padres they’d want some of the best pitchers in their organization. Plainly they want Buccholz and I wouldn’t be surprised if they wanted Bard too.
Bard + Buccholz + Reddick + Anderson for Gonzalez could make us a better team in the future and quite possibly next year BUT that’s the equivalent of robbing the Red Sox system of four of their top 5 guys. Good luck with that, unless Epstein is under ridiculous pressure to win NOW, I can’t see them making that trade.

A friendly counter-argument
Lars Anderson is not a top prospect anymore. His 2009 season was a major bust. If Hoyer brings him over in an Adrian Gonzalez he deserves to be fired. Reddick would be interesting but is really raw. These are not the kind of guys that any self respecting GM would get back in a deal. That would be embarrassing. Buccholz may be something, but that’s one guy and he’s a young pitcher and has control issues. That’s too scary to be the centerpiece of any deal. Bard is a just a reliever. You can find guys like him off the waiver wire (like we did with Mike Adams). This is not a good deal you’re mentioning. It’s a franchise killer.

Veteran Bat
Has anyone thought about the Padres picking up a guy like Randy Wynn?? A veteran outfielder (I know we have a back-up of outfielders), can play off the bench, has decent speed, good defensive replacement, and hits pretty well… Might be a good cheap play for someone to put in CF instead of pursuing Cameron and possibly spending extra money.

Bill Center can't read a contract
“Given the combination of his offense, defense and community contributions, Gonzalez might project to be an $18 million to $22 million player. The Padres wanted to rid themselves of Peavy at half that amount”
uh, Bill Jake was going to make exactly that in the coming years….not half of that.

Yeah
If they were going to fire someone, they should have fired Center.
Sadly, however, Krasovic hasn’t acquitted himself well of late with his crappy blog, constantly referring to Hoyer as “Doogie Houser” and Larry Lucchino as “The Smartest Man In Baseball.”

Oh.
And while you’re looking down the list of U-T writers that should have gone before Kras….I’d emphatically suggest Nick Canepa.
by Drama on Nov 10, 2009 7:07 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I agree about Canepa
I’m also not disputing that Lucchino is smart; I just find Krasovic’s persistently calling him “The Smartest Man In Baseball” (and never by name) strange and stupid. Same with calling Hoyer “Doogie Howser.” No, that’s worse, because a. it’s a tired and feeble joke; b. Hoyer is actually older than Theo Epstein, older than Towers was when he was hired as GM, older than Randy Smith was when he was hired as GM, older than Rangers GM Jon Daniels, older than Blue Jays GM Alex Anthopoulos, etc.
