San Diego Padres vs San Francisco Giants (or Open Thread: 10/3)

San Francisco Giants at San Diego Padres, Oct 3, 2009 7:05 PM PDT

Second to last game of the season.

For the next two games, let's try to not have anything happen that requires any sort of management, not necessarily at a tactical level or even at a strategic level, but at a more general level. As I understand it, the Padres are currently lacking in the general management sense.

So if we need decisions that require very deliberate, specific moves, we have that covered. And if we need decisions that are overly broad and sweeping, we should be good. Anything else, we will be clueless. To wit, we will not be able to make any decisions that require any sort of general understanding. We are playing with one hand tied behind our back.

Out of all the FO moves in the last year or so (Hoffman, Peavy, Alderson, Moores....)

This one sucks the most.

This morning, I went out to my minivan and discovered someone had stolen my XM.

Then, a few hours ago, I read about KT. I think maybe the baseball gods are telling me they don’t want me around anymore, or I should pick a local team like the Reds or the shudder Cubs or White Sox.

Something just came to me.

The KT and Moorad situation is analogous to the Favre and the packers thing. After messing around for a year, KT is going to come back and bite our asses playing for our rival team.

A kid who has a unicorn ranch in his room cannot call other people weird. Yes, we know about "Rancho Unicorno."

by Sam (sdsuaztec4) on Oct 3, 2009 8:44 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I absolutely hate the idea of firing KT

It feels to me like the whole front office has been built over the last 10 years to bring in guys around him that addressed all his weaknesses (draft, player analysis, international scouting) while he took care of the wheeling and dealing and the day-to-day operations. And we are now throwing that away.

That being said, the article with the “Gunslinger” catch phrase made me put myself in Moorad’s shoes. If I was coming into an organization as the CEO and was so “plan” oriented, I’d want my GM to be a man with a plan. I don’t think KT is that man. He figures out stuff year to year and does whatever he can to make that year work.

by Kozak on Oct 3, 2009 8:57 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Here's my opinion.

I love KT, and I’m extremely thankful for everything he did with the club.

But I think it’s probably time for some new blood. KT is good at making trades, but that’s not exactly what this team needs at the moment. What he’s not good at—drafting and signing FAs—is what we need.

So again, I think KT is a great guy and I wish him all the best wherever he ends up, but I think a new guy will probably benefit the Padres.

Baker DID interview.

Dusty Baker interviewed for the San Diego Padres’ managerial opening on Monday, the last of six candidates to meet with team executives.

General manager Kevin Towers said he planned to sit down with CEO Sandy Alderson on Tuesday to begin the process of getting down to two finalists.

The others who interviewed to become Bruce Bochy’s replacement were St. Louis Cardinals third base coach Jose Oquendo; Angels pitching coach Bud Black; Trey Hillman, manager of the Japanese team Nippon Ham Fighters; San Francisco Giants bench coach Ron Wotus; and former Dodgers hitting coach Tim Wallach.

Here you go...

The directive, issued by commissioner Bud Selig in 1999, doesn’t specifically say teams must interview minority candidates. Rather, it requires that minorities appear on clubs’ lists of potential hires for manager, general manager and several other executive posts.

“If a club has an opening in any of these positions, the club owner must notify me personally,” Selig wrote in the directive. “In addition, your list of candidates must be provided to me. I expect the list to include minority candidates whom you and your staff have identified.”

It's so much more rewarding

and interesting than a DA’s office.

You get actual clients who need help. You get to decide how you’re going to run the case, your trial strategy, etc. Each case is basically yours from start to finish.

In DA’s offices, it’s all politics, and the offices run like machines in which the attorneys are cogs. There is little to no autonomy, and how you decide to prosecute cases are largely determined by your superiors.

the only real players we’ve found I think is Cabrera and Blanks.

Venable is streaky

and not particularly young. His performance this year could just be him riding a hot streak.

Sort of

Latos is for real and will get better numbers next year. Hundley seems good for a catcher. I really want to see what Venable can do in a full season. Same could go for LeBlanc, but he may not get the chance. Our bullpen guys are almost all solid finds (though performance there tends to fluctuate).

He does seem primed.

There’s a chance he’s finally figuring things out and he’s still young enough to turn it around.

The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the iniquities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he, who in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of darkness, for he is truly his brother’s keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who would attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know my name is the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

Also speaking of changes

With all of the new talented pitchers we have, and with Chris Young being the HIGHEST PAID PLAYER ON THE TEAM, I think we should try to trade him over the winter too.

Definitely a better chance of that

Now that KT is gone.

However, I just wonder if somehow Kouz shakes off his April slumps, if he’d be an asset.

is of the opinion that Chase and Kouz are the same player—league average 3Bs, one with a slightly higher OBP, and the other with a slightly higher SLG.

What about the SBs

Headley is obviously more athletic. He’s also younger, yet almost as experienced. It’s not exactly apples and oranges, but it’s an unfair/silly/ill-conceived comparison
