So long KT..... I'm glad you're gone
As I sit and watch another Padre losing season I can't help but comment on your mentality to want losers on our team. What has KT done for San Diego? The organization has always hyped him up, like he could do no wrong. For being in San Diego for so long he should have at least brought us one World Series title. To me, he should have been gone a long time ago; at least last year after the 99 loses. It's time to expect more out of our team. If we keep up with the same attitude we will NEVER win a World Series. KT could not get the job done so I'm glad he's gone. At least we are making moves to get us out of the loser, no win, no championship type of culture that is synonymous with San Diego.

Congratulations
on not understanding the dynamics of this organization in any way.
Thank you for waving at me.

What dynamics?
I posted this in late May in regards to KT being a “dumpster diver”:
He does it because he has to…not because he wants to. The lack of financial support has been a huge hindrance for KT his entire career. I’m not just talking about being able to go out and buy whoever the f**k you want like the Cubs, Red Sox, Yankees, etc. via free agency…I mean, it effects everything. You bring up the lack of success in building through the minors…lack of funds has been a good portion of the reason our minor league system has been so shitty. When you draft players based on signability…and not ability…your success rate is going to be severely diminished. When you don’t spend the money to lure and sign international players until you finally open an academy in the D.R. 14 months ago…you’re going to lose out on some spectacular talent.
As for being .500 on the trade front…I don’t see that at all. Aside from Peavy (who as you mentioned was drafted by the Padres), the heart and soul of this roster as it stands has been built by his fleecing of other GM’s. The superstar of this team is undoubtedly Aid. We got Aid and our #2 starting pitcher by screwing Jon Daniels and the Rangers. Our stud closer came from KT doing the same thing to Omar Minaya and the Mets. Scott Hairston was brought in for a reliever (injured at the time) that is sporting a 6.23 ERA as we speak. We got Kouz for a 2nd baseman that can’t stay on the 21-28 Indians roster. Mike Adams, who should be back with the team in the next week or so, came from the Indians for a guy that’s now playing in Japan. Even with Mark Worrell out for the season, KT is still winning the Khalil trade with the emergence of Luke Gregerson.
And when making trades, KT isn’t just looking strictly at making the best deal he possibly can…he has to make the best deal he possibly can that fits into his budget.
There was really only one time in KT’s career that Moores gave him carte blanche to do whatever he had to do to win…that was before the 1998 season. Moores knew he had to win in ’98 to get Prop C passed and he gave KT the free reign to get the job done…I think we all know how that worked out.

What about the other 26 years that Towerts wasn't here?
No titles for San Diego. It doesn’t matter who the GM is or was. We’ve always been losers, though lovable.
Will we ever win? The answer is yes and the year is 2011… For guarans.

What? Oh please...
Kev, this is just asinine. What has he done? Oh, how about Gonzo/Young for a bucket of balls? How about Sheets for Nevin? How about crafting bullpen after bullpen? FACT: KT has been BY FAR the most successful GM in the history of the club. The Padres have played more than 162 games 6 times… KT helmed FIVE of those ballclubs.
I agree that the club needs a better focus on development. I do not feel it was necessary to make this change to accomplish it. Think outside the box. Figure out a way to accomplish it while retaining KT. There is no salary cap in a front office and money spent on talent there pays outsize rewards compared to spending that money on players. I feel this is a bad move.
Maybe it will pay off. Maybe it won’t. But to hate on the only GM ever to elevate this ballclub to two periods of respectability is shortsighted and silly.

In 14 years,
four division titles and a world series appearance isn’t enough.
Oh wait… yes it is. It’s pretty spectacular actually.
SAVE KT!

I hope you like the Pirates, 858 Kev
Because KT is quite possibly the only thing that has kept us from being Pittsburgh.

KT was terrific in working with a small payroll...
But how can you account for the total abortion that was his 15 years of screwing up the draft…. throwing darts would have hit more major leaguers than KT drafted…. especially his first round abominations.

Besides Billy Beane
Name another GM who excels at the draft. It’s a total crapshoot.

"Screwing up the draft"?
Josh you do realize he had a budget, right? This wasn’t a matter of simply picking the best player available. Players were crossed off the list right off the bat for the simple fact that KT knew he couldn’t afford them. Do you honestly think Matt Bush was drafted with the first pick overall because KT and the rest of the organization thought he was the best player available?

Love KT
You have to ask the right question: what was the winning percentage and playoff appearances by other small market teams. You can think of the small market teams: KC, Pittsburgh, Baltimore, Milwaukee, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Toronto, Tampa Bay, Oakland, Colorado. Would you trade any of these teams performance for ours during that period? OK, Oakland, but Beane is the absolute best. Colorado, OK, you would take the last few years, but not the decade before that.
Comparing against big market teams that can consistently outspend us does not qualify. He did an amazing job given he had to work with. There might be guys who can be more methodical and maybe we will see the benefit down the road, but it is a huge risk. Why not separate the functions, and hire a strong development/draft guy and give that guy pretty strong autonomy?
I will miss him badly.
