Adrian to Red Sox?
So now that we've hired a Boston assistant as our GM, rumors are flying that it's only a matter of time before Adrian gets traded to the Red Sox. Even KT is getting in on the action:
He is a San Diego product and the Padres' one gate attraction, but they know they won't be able to afford Gonzalez when his contract runs out after his $5.5million option year in 2011. In order to get maximum return, the Padres probably will have to trade Gonzalez this winter. Either way, it will be about the most unpopular trade they could ever make. And no doubt, the first bidders at Hoyer's door will be the Red Sox, since he served as GM Theo Epstein's top assistant since 2004.
Sadly, the Padres must deal Gonzalez.
Revenue-sharing money simply isn't enough right now in their market, where a bad local TV package reaps only about $2million and they have $18 million a year in stadium debt. In addition, nobody knows how much it's costing new owner Jeff Moorad to complete his buyout of John Moores. "They're going to have a $40 million payroll for the foreseeable future," said recently fired Padres GM Kevin Towers, "and there's just no way they can devote half of that to one player. It's just a matter of when they decide to trade (Gonzalez)."
I really don't think this has to happen, and will be disappointed if it does.
But if it does in fact happen, what would you want in a trade for Adrian?
I'd want Clay Buchholz, Jacoby Ellsbury, Daniel Bard, plus prospects at minimum.
Thoughts?

I highly doubt
The first thing a young, unproven GM does is come into a new organization and trade the face of the franchise. The earliest I can see this happening is next July. Though I think an extension is just as likely, if the team improves and Adrian will settle for less than Teix/Cabrera money.
by Dalton on Oct 27, 2009 12:55 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Therein lies the problem, though.
Is there any evidence Adrian would settle for less? He was worth nearly $30 million this year, and got paid what, $4 mill? Say you could get him to sign for $15 mill/year. That’s nearly half a $40 million payroll. Worth it?
There’s no guarantee Adrian will continue to improve or even stay the same. His highest value is RIGHT NOW, so if you ARE going to trade him, now is the time.

Without a doubt worth 15 mil a year.
But I understand your point…I’m hoping payroll is up to 50-60 within the next few years. Spending that amount on an elite 1B makes a lot more sense than being the Twins, and spending it on a guy who pitches an inning every few games.
I’d also like to see another season of Blanks getting regular ABs to see what we have there.

I know.
It’s just that if you’re going to trade him, you have to do it NOW. You can’t wait, because there’s no guarantee Adrian will keep producing at the pace he has been, and that the Red Sox will still be willing to pay later on.
It’s a really tough decision. If you don’t trade him now, you’d better extend him, because you’re not likely to get more for him in the future than you are right now.
We're boned.

I don't agree that you have to do it now.
It’s not like he’s some fluky hitter who is going to fall off the face of the Earth in terms of performance. And if the Red Sox or some other team doesn’t want to pay a premium price for him down the line— oh well, worst case scenario, I guess we’re stuck with an awesome player for a couple of years, and then get a couple draft picks.
by Dalton on Oct 27, 2009 1:58 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
You know what's interesting
is that until this past season, Adrian’s value was fairly constant. From 2006-2008 his WAR was 3.9, 3.3, and 3.4. Then it nearly doubled in 2009 to 6.4.
2006-2008 Adrian is a good player, but not nearly as good as 2009 Adrian. So if he goes out there in 2010 and has about 3.5 WAR season, his trade value plummets and he’s not nearly as coveted.

Theo Epstein was just on 1090 and he said he doesn't expect to be making any trades
with Jed any time soon. He made a very good point saying that since he and Jed worked together for so long, they tend to value players the same, so it’d be very hard to get a trade done.
He also said that he has pictures from Jed’s bachelor party, so that may help in negotiations.

Why does it have to be the Red Sox?
There’s plenty of teams out there in need of Adrian’s bat with gobs of money. Specifically, the Blue Jays, Mets and Rangers come to mind.
Also, when is the Cox deal up? If I was Moorad, I’d do everything I could to buy my way out of that deal. It’s the biggest disadvantage the Padres have. IMO, it’s literally killing the franchise. Less revenue equals less money for big name players equals less tickets sold equals even less money for the team. It’s kindof amazing that the Padres have been able to compete at all while being forced to be one of the lowest payrolls in baseball for so long.

Seems the smartest thing to do would be for the Padres to create their own sports channel. There’s probably a legitimate reason not to do that though.

The Cox deal is done after the 2011 season (two more years).
FSN West gave the Angels $500mil for 10 years (‘07-’16). I doubt we’d get that kind of scratch, but the fact that FSN just signed a recent deal with FSN sort of precludes the possibility that we’d get an FSN deal.
I think the problem is going to be finding someone to bid against Cox for the next contract.
Maybe Versus will be hungry to get a piece of a legitimate sports team? I could see that happening.

Mets, Blue Jays and Rangers?
I think it’s highly unlikely that any of those teams could afford trading for Adrian because:
Mets: depleted farm system so no chips.
Blue Jays: Still out of contention for the coming 2-3 years and that Vernon Wells contract (the worst in baseball) is killing any possibility to extend him.
Rangers: They certainly have the package that could swing the deal but no financial flexibility to extend him and their best prospect (one of the top 5 in all the minors) is a 1st baseman (Justin Smoak)

If the Padres traded Adrian to the Red Sox,
I would want a package that would hurt the sox in return. It would hurt the Padres, we all know that, it should hurt the sox as well. Something like Clay Buchholz/Casey Kelly/

From what I'm hearing is that

As much as I would hate to see Adrian go, it makes sense. Boston needs a first baseman. Jacoby Ellisburry, would be a good fit, and the padres need some starting pitching. Kyle Blanks is not a true outfielder, and Kevin Youkilis is not really a true 1b. Mike Lowell is getting older, and not as productive as they might have hoped. I could see a situation where Adrian and Kouz are dealt for Jacoby, some and some pitching, and the Pads put their prospect 1b and 3b, Blanks and Headley at their actual positions and pick up some speed in the outfield. They do have a few guys in the farm who have some speed in OF, and Hoyer spoke to the idea that consistency from A to AAA to ML needed to address the aspects of our ballpark.

Hi evreybody
A Red Sox fan here. I think that the Padres will not trade Adrian this off season: Hoyer won’t start his tenure by trading his star player even if that means retooling the farm system. Like any competent GM, he’ll have to do an extensive analysis of the team’s roster, financial resources, state of the farm system and state of the opposition which will take him a long time before building an action plan for the short and the long term.
It’s in his best interest to sell during the season and not after it (See Riccardi attempt to trade Halladay and Texas-Atlanta trade) because team in contention and looking for the “missing piece” (due to injuries, suspensions and slumps of key players) will overpay to get him, in few words He’ll get leverage: If the seeking teams are willing to pay, fine! if they don’t, he’s still under contract for another year and he could try to ship during the next off-season but for a lesser package (See the Santana trade) or the draft picks if nothing pans out.

Ok, so let's look at it from this perpsective.
If we don’t trade Adrian, to re-sign him we’ll have to pay between $15-20 million per year for him. Let’s say $18 million.
If we assume about a $50 million payroll in 2012, that would mean Adrian takes up 36% of your payroll, and leaves $32 million to build the rest of the team around him.
This would last at least 5 years. Are you comfortable with that?

Does our young talent continue?
Do we continue to have good drafts?
Did we trade Kouz and Bell for something useful?
How does the NL West look over the next few years?
Do any of a thousand other things happen/not happen?
I think you are worried about the team sucking and making bad decisions over the next few years, and then having a fat contract hanging on its next for the next decade. I can’t say I blame you. But I think Adrian is the real deal, and could easily hit like, say, a healthy Carlos Delgado for the next several years.
Bottom line (and it’s been said many times before): there’s no reason to trade the guy (or not extend him, reasonably) unless the trade is CLEARLY a net benefit for the Pads.

A big part of this question
is how close do you really think you are to competing. There are legitimate baseball minds who think this team is years away still. If that’s in fact the case, then you can’t justify keeping him, and it’s far better to exchange him for a couple young, controllable players and a bunch of prospects.

I think with the right economical FA signings, a little luck, and an All Star 1B (which we luckily already have), this team could contend within the next 2-3 years.

What have you been watching? We haven’t had a first-rounder pan out since… hm… when?
The last several guys- Dykstra, Tate, Antonelli, Carrillo- have either been inconsistent, unable to get on the field, or injury-plagued. Bush and Burroughs were infamous washes.
I do like some of the deep-round talent we’ve picked up, I’ll give you that.

Can we PLEASE draft Ali Villanueva of Army this year??? I'd mortgage a kidney for a tackle/wideout hybrid.

Is it really fair to include tate in there?
he was JUST drafted.
Agree about Dykstra, Carillo, Antonelli and Schmidt

Two cents.
It’s justifiable to pay Adrian what he’s worth if you’re extending the payroll to 50-80 mil; not so much if you’re not going to spend some cash. But I think that if we manage to keep him for somewhat cheaper— especially a cheap extension— we will be headed in a winning direction. Look at what could very possibly be the Opening Day roster next year (this is before ANY offseason player moves get made mind you):
1B: Adrian
2B: Area of concern. Edgar has the job for now, but if Antonelli comes along he could take it by midseason.
SS: Everth Cabrera.
3B: Kouz
LF: Area of concern. Chase Headley is a strikeout machine with questionable range. I may be better to play Blanks here.
CF: Anthony Gwynn.
RF: Will Venable.
ROTATION:
#1: Chris Young
#2: Mat Latos
#3: Clayton Richard
- and #5: Areas of concern. Up for grabs— could be Tim Stauffer, maybe Carrillo will make an impact this year, plus one of the guys from the Hairston deal.
BULLPEN:
LR: Cla Meredith, other guys like Clay Hensley
SU: Luke Gregorson
CL: Heath Bell
Damn good lineup, in my opinion.
