NEWS FLASH!!! KIM NG IS THE NEW PADRES GM!!! (Just kidding. It's Jed Hoyer.)

Here's the link that enlightens us to this bit of official news.
Was I the only one hoping for some 11th hour crazy news? Maybe yes. Maybe no.

I see that a new GM for the Padres
means a new tag-line for GLB.

Is the press conference over or what?
Everyone says it was at 2:30 but XX says it’s at 3:30. There aren’t any pictures or articles about it so was it moved?

It was at 2:30,
But they cut away for the opening of Hacksaw’s show.

What I'm wondering is
Will Jed fondly refer to all of us as the “Gaslampball-busters”, as did KT?

No – I was actually hoping for Ng, but I’m optimistic either way.
mission accomplished.

I just heard Jed on 1090....
I’m not sold. I have hope for the future with him…but it really sounds like this next year is going to be trashed to grow for the future. I think there’s a real chance (at least 50%) that Adrian is dealt this offseason. I hope I’m wrong.
by Dugout Dude on Oct 26, 2009 3:42 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Maybe
By trashed it just means that they won’t be trying to get any free agents to take away jobs from the younger guys. If that’s the case, then I’m optimistic. Because the last thing I want is a Joe Crede, Brian Schneider, Ken Griffey, Darren Erstad or Garrett Anderson flailing away at pitches while some younger, talented guys ride the pine.
That being said, I don’t want Adrian to go anywhere. I have yet to see a potential trade that makes this team better in any way shape or form in 2010 or beyond.

Why aren't there any pictures anywhere showing that this press conference actually occurred?
Nothing on the UT, MLB.com, ESPN, Yahoo sports… did this really happen today? Does anyone care besides like 25 people on GLB?

That is becuase Jed does not actually exist.
He is a virtual being created by the evil John Moores to make us believe he is not running the show.

I'm wondering this too.
It’s like Moorad murdered Hoyer weeks ago and plans to run the team himself while using Jed Hoyer’s body in some kind of sick Weekend at Bernie’s fashion.

After watching the press confrence i could not be happier with this decision
Hoyer has been in town for 2 days and he already has a vision. Building a team from the ground up that is fit to play in Petco. Success

Dude carried a 3 ring binder full of statistics full of Padre statistics into first interview...whoopdeefriggindoo!
"I wanted to go in there and show the Padres what kind of preparedness they could expect from me," said Hoyer, who didn’t know the number of hours he spent compiling his analysis of the Padres.
"I was still working for the Red Sox and putting the book together on the side," he said. "I didn’t sleep much."
Hard to do when the BoSox had already been eliminated in 3 straight by the Mighty Anaheim Angels of LA.? I’d be looking for a way to parlay my current gig into a GM job too!
Gimme a break. Mr. New Hampshire Wonder Boy is going to get measured, sadly enough, by KT’s 4 division titles (and don’t forget the one WS appearance) in 14 years, only he will never have that much time to deliver at least an NL pennant. In fact, he probably has less than 3 years to get the Padres deep in to the playoffs, and if there is any regression after year 2, he’s a goner by the way of DePo…wait…bad reference.
Actually, I am impressed Jed’s first order of business was to get rid of Grady Fuson; why that guy had become permanent furniture, along with “Chief” Gayton, is beyond me, considering the long-sagging drafting and player development parts of the organization.
Further to that point…my question to Jed is, are you willing, able, and have the guts/financial means to jump on a plane to some weird place like Brasil, South Africa or Italy (yeah, that’s right, I said Brasil, South Africa or Italy) and harvest the next batch of MLB players who nobody’s every heard of? Point being, drill for oil where nobody’s really drilling yet, and that’s partly what makes you the man from the player development standpoint.
Now, how he handles his camel swapping chops, ala the Sludge Merchant or Trader Jack, that will be interesting too, but nonetheless equally if not more important.
Myself being a USDHS brother of Billy Eppler, Hoyer’s suspect to me…so you got some proving to do, Chowda Boy.

Actually, I don't hate all things Boston
Just want to make sure we’re not all drinking the Red Sox lemonade and thinking it will automatically turn the Padre organization into sudden WS championships.
Many a young wonder boy have tried and failed now in the MLB. Hoyer has to basically rebuild an organization that has consistently sucked eggs in scouting and drafting, and win soon. I realize that cannot turn on a dime, but it’s not like Hoyer walked into a bassackwards organization when he became an intern at Fenway.
Knowing Eppler personally and his predisposition, I knew he’d be the man for the job, and I actually can understand how he’d want to stay with the Yanks at least until they have another WS under his belt. Granted I’m biased cuz he’s an SD guy…but as opposed to the Giles’ brothers, Billy’s has gotten consistently positive reviews from his employers AND spouse.
How Hoyer handles this work in process, for lack of a better way of putting it, remains to be seen. I’m not giving up, but I guess I’m not impressed by the first appearance…then again I’m not impressed by how Moorad carries himself in public either, but oh well, he is better than Moores.

I dunno about you
but I don’t expect them to win immediately. I think they’ll be around .500 next year but nothing more. Less wouldn’t surprise me. I wouldn’t expect a playoff birth until 2012 at the earliest.
We're boned.

2012!?!?!?!
I’d be pissed if it took that long. We’ve been rebuilding for 2 years. We had a +.500 team over the last two months of the season against playoff teams. If there’s an influx of money come 2010 or 2011, I expect the playoffs in 2011.
by Dex on Oct 27, 2009 10:51 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Maybe.
I guess it depends on whether the younger guys pan out quickly. The last two months of the season is encouraging, but there’s evidence that they were playing over their heads against lousy competition. If we go with what we’ve got and sign only low-to-mid level free agents, then I’d expect it to take longer since we’ve got to wait for the young guys to get better.
If there’s an influx of money, then I’ll agree and say sooner. There are some expensive pieces we need (corner outfielder, centerfielder, starting pitcher(s)). If they money is available to sign them, then sure we could get back to the playoffs by 2011.
We're boned.

Here's a take from Baseball America that will make you sad.
Hoyer needs to rebuild, and he probably has to start by dealing Gonzalez and Bell for several prospects, then investing the payroll savings in the draft and the international market. The Padres have a long ways to go before they’re ready to contend in the short term or long term.

600 million people in Latin America spell it Brasil, so you lose again.
by MarshmeloMartinez on Oct 26, 2009 10:41 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
It's spelled "brasil" in portuguese and spanish so yes they do spell it that way.
However, since people predominantly speak English on GLB, it would be a understandable spelling as “Brazil” since that’s how it’s spelled in English. On the other hand, I don’t see why it matters.

I've never seen someone get so fired up
over a spelling mistake. The dude went and did research on population numbers and figured out which countries it is commonly spelled that way. Figuring out what the name is derived from and when & where it originated. Settle it down a notch Marshmelo I was just joking around. Being a former soccer player I am fully aware of how they spell Brazil in other countries but at the same time I said here in America and like ‘tec said here on GLB we usually speak English and the proper way to spell it in English is with a Z and not an S. Why didn’t you put Italia while you were at it since that is the common way it is spelled in Italy?
