Around SBN: Diego Sanchez and the Dangers of Fame in MMA

"I'm all for it," Grant said when I asked him yesterday about instant replay. "When it's a crucial play that could sway a game one way or another the bottom line for me is I just want 'em to get it right.

"If I were an umpire, I would have no problem. I would want to get it right. I would rather take time to watch it, look at it and get it right, rather than make the call, screw a team and then all of a sudden you're Don Denkinger for the last 30 years."

I heard McCarver the other night

Say that he’d only be in favor of expanding it to include fair/foul (not that he has any deciding power, but I imagine a number of the purists would feel the same way). I challenge anyone who believes this to listen to my arguments for plays at the plate and come away thinking we shouldn’t add replay for that. That Cabrera play where he touched home but the umpire missed it (and Eckstein pleased with him that he saw it wrong) being the prime example where replay would help without interfering with the umpires judgment call on a bang-bang play.

pleased = pleaded

I almost typed “pleased = pleased”, that’s how easy it is to make that typo.

Eckstein pleased who?

I was at that game, I don’t remember seeing that.

I think the attitude has to change. Umpires are dicks (for the most part, there’s nice ones). They also never recognize when they’re out of position on these calls. Maybe they’d see the bang-bang plays if they weren’t crouching behind the player who’s catching a ball or making a tag in front of him, that’s what I’ve noticed on a lot of these calls, anyway.

Who's that guy trying to slide into home?

Was this an exhibition game? I don’t remember it. He doesn’t look like he’s gonna touch home plate. That’s an out right?

"I'm a Padre at heart. Always gonna root for the Padres. Twenty-five years [with this organization], how can't you? Next year I'm gonna be rooting like a son-of-a-gun for these guys and for Blackie ... I'm gonna be rooting for the next general manager here, rooting for the city, the fans, everybody. I think a lot of San Diego." -Kevin Towers

No

I watched that replay many times. I’m not sure that you could conclusively overturn it. There is implied evidence that leads you to believe that the hand was not touching the plate, but there is no shot where you see the tag applied and his hand is conclusively not touching homeplate, instead you see the catchers cleat blocking your view of here Holliday’s hand actually is.

It was also a bang-bang play that you really don’t want to get in the NFL habit of reviewing ad-nauseum just so the call can be upheld. I’d rather see something where the umpire ruled that the tag or the plate was missed and then could go back and see whether that was indeed the case.

I don't see how he can say it should only be fair/foul and home runs calls

when over half the blown calls have been safe/out calls on the basepaths.

We're boned.

I find this amusing.

They talk about it like it’s only been a problem during the post-season.

It hasn’t. It’s been this bad all season, and in seasons past. The only difference is you don’t have 15 million people watching every single game, so blown calls don’t get nearly the press in the regular season.

Baseball has little credibility as a fair or honest sport when it’s so clear how many calls umpires blow, and they steadfastly refuse to do ANYTHING to correct it.

We're boned.

The camera angles are increased

The slow motion effects are at their highest caliber. Everyone involved in the sport sees the game compared to the hearsay that goes on when something gets blown in regular season. And, of course, the games mean more so the calls are more dramatic. So while its probably ill-conceived, the extra criticism of the calls totally make sense.

Stick a replay official in the booth

and have him correct bad calls as they happen – just like college football. Better yet, to save $, they could do it from MLB headquarters in NY. They already are for the hr replay rule, just like the NHL doing it all instant replay from NHL headquarters in Toronto.
